i dont hold the president accountable or responsible for the state of the economy...
That's actually good to hear. I was fishing a little...wondering how many people realize that the president does not, and cannot affect all aspects of American life/policy, etc.
Also, if you haven't noticed, the Slashdot poll shows once and for all where Slashdot readers fall on the election.
If that's the case, it appears to be a direct contradiction of the first poll yesterday where the majority of slashdot readers felt they were better off now than they were 4 years ago. If most slashdot readers feel they are better off, why do 42% of them want a change in the white house?
It really makes me wonder if people are just voting for Kerry because it's the hip and cool thing to do. Hey, if P-Ditty, Bruce Spingsteen, Michael Moore, and probably the rest of Hollywood are endorsing Kerry, why shouldn't I...right?
If you don't 100% completely love what you do in IT for a living, you sure as hell better get out(might want to wait for the economy to pick up) but you better make room for those who know that they are in it for life, for the long haul
It's only a matter of time before you are beatin' down too...give it 10 years. You'll be tired of useless meetings, office politics bullshit and the endless red tape to make a small system change. You'll be tired of doing an actual 1-2 hours of work on a computer out of a 9-12 hour day (if you're lucky). Oh yeah, your wife will also give you shit work having to work evenings and weekends and being on call for a week every 4 weeks.
I do have to say I admire your enthusiasm! Keep it as long as you can!
Most of our customers have been with us for years. I agree that there are probably some pretty crappy outsourcing companies out there. I CAN tell you that I have (as have all of my co-workers) worked extended hours to deploy a new system for our customers, I rarely work a 40 hour week. I also know that most of our new customers go with us because of our track record and references. Instead of taking business away, a lot of our customers give us MORE business, and not less.
I know there's nothing I can say to convince you (actually, I'm really not trying to, there are some days I'd rather be working in an in-house shop:) but we work hard to give our customers (pretty much) anything they want/need.
I currently work for an oursourcing company, and also worked in-house (UNIX systems administration), so I've been on both sides of the fence.
My experience has been that outsourcing companies (at least the one I work for) and their employees take BETTER care of the systems than in-house employees. We have so many contractual obligations and SLA's that it would be very stupid for us to take the job lightly. This is our business, what we do, our product if you will, and we don't do it half assed.
I know it sucks to be outsourced, which is how I got my current job, but it's just another cog in the IT wheel.
I think this article perfectly represents the sad state of popular music today:
I did a lot of the vocal edits on a plane," said BT. "I cut and pieced the vocal together. There's something like 2,000 or 3,000 edits in that three-minute song, and I did that sitting on a plane.
I think pretty much everyone knows that "bands" like nsync have no musical talent, but I think this quote proves it. Come on, the "band" can't get through a 3 minute song without thousands of edits on their vocals?!?!
For years, music students were expected to learn to play the piano as the main instrument for their education...those days are over. "People are turning to the computer as the way of learning music...
"Music" students are learning to use point and click applications instead of actually learning to play instruments. No wonder there is so much crappy non-music out there.
The real sad thing is that people are actually buying this stuff!
...Again, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime. And whether you agree with the law or not, it is currently the law. Don't whine when you get prosecuted under it.
Yes, and I'm sure she will single-handedly bring down the recording industry if no-one puts a stop to her diabolical schemes!!!

This is actually pretty funny. A bunch of geeks rioting online...doesn't really strike fear in my heart. Really, try and picture it....HAHAHAHA.
I'll say the same thing I said about the Segway...That guy riding it sure looks gay.
Dr. David Marcus, head of the Genesis Project, has gone into hiding.
Wasn't Dr. Carol Marcus the actual head of the Genesis project?
It's magical. It satisfies all my web needs!...Google rules. And I'm saving to buy several shares.
Just a hint:
That's really not a very good reason for buying stock in a company. You may want to look into it a bit more than that. Just some friendly advise.

That's an intelligent post. What are you, like 12?
Well, I don't know what to tell ya...

Is there any advantage of using something like this over just using iptables?
A swallow carrying a Coconut?
One could just grip it by the husk. Or two could carry it together, and just use a standard creeper.
This has got to be one of the stupidest studies ever!
Sharp to Sell 3D laptop for $3299
Man, it's about time, I'm really tired of my 2-dimensional laptop!

This must truely be for the lazy, fat, couch potato types. (walking to the mailbox is just WAY too much exercise for me!)
I don't care...mod me down...hahahaha
What does the RIAA have against virtual memory!??!?
Maybe they're afraid of their system thrashing. They get scared when they hear "swapping", they should actually call it "paging".

Here's the comment I was looking for...
When this story came out yesterday, I posted the following comment.
I guess I just had to wait a day.
I might have missed it browsing through the comments, but I was wondering, where is the obligatory comment:
Why is this story on slashdot? Who cares about a power outage in the United States, I live in Europe. Slashdot is soooo U.S.-centric.
Oh brother!!!
Supposively their bot saw the words "Pac" and "Man" in the filename
What does Supposively mean?
...was leaning toward a switch to Linux, the upstart computer operating system...
What is this new software company...Linux???
or are Andy Hunt and Dave Thomas correct
Dave Thomas??? I thought he was dead...
P.S. Google "acronym lookup" Now why don't you try looking up "acronym" in the dictionary. Most people on /. don't know what the word means.
So when is the new version of Mozilla out?
