I registered deathapi.com a while ago, after an acquaintance passed away, for this reason specifically. At the time, I had imagined a system that you OAuth against w/ all of your relevant accounts w/ full admin access, and specify a recipient of those keys after some pre-determined length of inactivity (a year, say). The idea still has a lot of relevancy in my mind, but it's so morbid to think about.

I was in the same boat as you, having had a decade of experience making web sites and programming for NSCA Mosaic, but with no schooling to speak of that was relevant, no-one in my home-town would take a second look at my resume. I moved to NYC (but know that SF is similar, regarding qualification judgements), and found that everyone I talk to in the tech industry cares about what you're capable of, not what's on your resume. Now I'm a director at a fortune 500, and teach at one of the most prestigious design schools in the country. I still don't have a degree.

Fantastic find. Makes a lot of sense, and basically means the app that ships with 10.7 server is an upgrade for the "basic" server administration app if you use the simple 10.6 configuration, but that all of the underlying services we know and love continue to exist, and just need a different app to admin them. This is no different than how it worked with 10.6, except now the apps don't come with the OS.

  7. OpenCaptions.com on Closed Captioning In Web Video? · · Score: 5, Informative
A friend has been working on Open Captions for quite a while, that seems to address a lot of these issues. From what I understand, its aim is to pick up where video distribution companies and content authors have left off.

When you think about sites like youtube, you can't hope to have users caption their videos before uploading, but you still want this content available in an accessible way. OpenCaptions takes any online video source, and allows user-captioning, that can be layed over video in a number of ways. It still requires a captioner, like any other captions, but allows the tasks to be distributed to anyone who wants to lend a hand at captioning a video.

    From the about page:

Open Captions allows anyone to add captions and subtitles to Internet video - caption your own work, or a favorite video from another website. Captioning allows for everyone to share the same media experience on the Internet regardless of hearing abilities and language barriers. Open Captions wants to encourage more people to caption videos for each other, this site will help provide the tools and forum for online captions. The phrase 'Open Captions' is referring to a community of people transcribing and translating Internet videos for the world to watch. The term 'open captions' is also used technically to describe captions that are always available on some videos.

  14. Sounds like the Marriott in Times Square on Smart Elevators Coming to Seattle · · Score: 2, Interesting

In the Times Square Marriott here in NYC, in the lobby each elevator has a keypad where you key in the floor you want to go to, and then it shows you on an LED display which elevator number you want to go to. It is actually kind-of confusing, because you type in one number and it gives you another, but after you clear that hurdle, it works great. You get in an elevator, it stops on your floor without further input, and continues to its next destination. I think about that elevator system a lot, despite only ever having used it twice.

I'm pretty sure that the engine for Thrill Kill was actually used later to make the first Wu Tang Clan fighting game. Yep, as this link puts it so well, "With a different fighting engine behind it, this could have been a much, much better game."

As far as I was ever concerned, this was one of the worst games to be squashed. There was this mythos that surrounded it as the most violent, bloody game ever, but not only was the gore way over-hyped, but the game itself was absolutely horrible. I'm sure this is why the blood and violence was added in the first place, to distract from the atrocity that was the rest of the game.

  16. Thermal really is the way to go on One-at-a-time Mailing Label Printers? · · Score: 4, Informative

At our office we use the Dymo Labelwriter 330 Turbo. Its a great product for exactly what you're looking for. Every day we print singles or hundreds of labels, primarily as shipping labels. Unless you're taking a lighter or some other intense heat source to the surface of the label, the ink isn't going to fade or become distored in any short amount of time. We've never had the quality of the label be at fault for a mis-delivered package. That's primarily left up to the human error, as always.

You should check out the two newest offerings from dymo. They have a 400 model, and one that prints to two different types of labels at once, which can be nice if you occaisionally need clear labels.

  21. Re:K750i Good and Cheap on Two Megapixel Cameraphone Shootout · · Score: 1

I have the d750i (same phone and camera, just different color) and it really is a fantastic phone / camera. My fuji f710 bit the dust with the purple recalled ccd earlier this year, so I've been without a camera for over 6 months. I've been eyeing a camera around the range of the Canon 20D or the unreleased Nikon D200, but I just can't afford it right now. I wanted a new phone though, so the idea of having a phone with an actual decent camera attached to it appealed to me greatly.

Every photo on my flickr account in the last month has been taken with this camera, and there are some decent ones. It is a little bit tricky getting the low-light photos to come out without a lot of noise, but there are some ways around it.

I'm by no means saying that this camera is anywhere near as good as the fuji, or even in the same league as something like the 20D. But the ability to upload somewhat decent shots to flickr anywhere I am, right when I want to (thanks, t-mobile gprs) is fantastic.
