They also have the benefit of being mostly non-DRM'd and free of RIAA/MPAA machinations. I can still hook a VCR to my old TV. No guarantees with the new tech.
If cardreaders become just another peripheral, Bad Shit will take place. Security through obscurity is, or was, a valid tactic, because who in hell had a cardreader?
Hopefully the banks will skip the "attempt to outlaw" phase and implement a fix right quick, because "in the meantime" isn't going to be pretty.
I really think that, even if this bill should pass, the Supreme Court will throw it out. God bless the independent judiciary. But, in the worst case scenario, old tech will be our salvation. Can't rip the CD? Convert it to cassette, then you can have your way with it. Hang on to your VCR. Vive le resistance!
will a non DRM BIOS be considered a device for circumventing copyright, and get banned under the DMCA. All the more reason to get it established soon, before newer more ridiculous laws are passed.
Unlawful use of 1's and 0's! Five years & $5000 fine!
I don't think restricting it to run only GPL software would be a good decision. The ethical concerns alone are disturbing. (Our hardware only runs software that we approve. Sound like anyone you know?) Other than that, how would we get the device manufacturers to target our architecture for compatibility? We don't even have 100% coverage for Linux yet.
Not trying to be combative or dismissive, but it just doesn't make economic sense.
Neither. To quote Schlock Mercenary, "The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy. Nothing more, nothing less." Which, if you think about it, would've been good advice to give to Reagan before he sent aid to Saddam.
Profit and service need not be mutually exclusive. It is good to render service to your fellow man. It is all the better to turn a nice profit doing it!
Wow, that post looks like it might have been generated by a script. You know, the pick one from each column of keywords/phrases sort. It's so hard to find any originality anymore.
It's comfortable to have somebody to point the finger at, but Orrin Hatch is just their puppet of the moment. Should he be voted out of office, they'd just buy a new senator.
The plot of Metroid Fusion would work for that. You'd need a voice for "Adam", and the backup techs that kept sending upgrades to the station. Plus, Samus vs. SA-X seems perfect for Woo's talents.
The war on terrorism isn't effective? That's not what the Iraqis said in the latest poll. They're glad it happened, the mad bombers are just the lunatic fringe. Well armed, but lunatic.
"Until America wakes up"? Tell that to the Spanish. They just got bombed for repelling the moors in the last crusade, their participation in Afghanistan and Iraq was just icing on the cake. Yes, that's right, Afghanistan. The war with UN approval. I guess nobody told the terrorists that the UN said it was okay.
"Peace with terrorists"? That's the biggest chimera of them all. They want you dead, they do not care if you are liberal, neocon, or centrist. If you want peace with them you have to put your woman in a headscarf and chuck out all your technology. America needs to wake up? No, sir, you need to wake up.
Of course, the funny thing about that blacklist was that it was mostly on-target. Don't believe me? Google for "Venona Decrypts". The American Left has ever been the home of traitors and sympathizers, but somehow questioning their patriotism is taboo. Funny that.
People choose to over-eat and not exercise, they did not choose to be slaughtered by terrorists. Besides, what did you want done about obesity? Mandatory gym sessions? Hard caps on how much people can buy at the grocery store? Should Weight Watchers be given law enforcement powers?
Why do people bag on capitalism so hard? America was built on capitalism, and is now the most powerful, prosperous country in the world. Say what you like about capitalism, it works. (Go ahead, I can feel the troll mods homing in as I type...)
Sure there would. Eye protection... given how much these enhanced eyeballs would cost, you really have to protect that investment!

Oh, no doubt! Still, there's no cause to believe a "successor" would not immediately be found.

No, no, it's not a firewall, it's a freedom wall!
Clueless yank here, but isn't that the sort of thing that the EU was meant to correct?

Go get some nice asian girl to give you a Hong Kong massage.

Think before you post next time.

Press is press. They'll need a lot of it to get people into side-scrollers again. I can't even remember the last successful side-scroller.
we're all dead. So don't worry about it too much!
Or just sign him up for every catalog you can find.
Mormons, actually. It's like Christ++.
I don't even want to -think- about what happens when the vacuum cleaner gets switched on!
