If cardreaders become just another peripheral, Bad Shit will take place. Security through obscurity is, or was, a valid tactic, because who in hell had a cardreader? Hopefully the banks will skip the "attempt to outlaw" phase and implement a fix right quick, because "in the meantime" isn't going to be pretty.

I really think that, even if this bill should pass, the Supreme Court will throw it out. God bless the independent judiciary. But, in the worst case scenario, old tech will be our salvation. Can't rip the CD? Convert it to cassette, then you can have your way with it. Hang on to your VCR. Vive le resistance!

I don't think restricting it to run only GPL software would be a good decision. The ethical concerns alone are disturbing. (Our hardware only runs software that we approve. Sound like anyone you know?) Other than that, how would we get the device manufacturers to target our architecture for compatibility? We don't even have 100% coverage for Linux yet. Not trying to be combative or dismissive, but it just doesn't make economic sense.

The war on terrorism isn't effective? That's not what the Iraqis said in the latest poll. They're glad it happened, the mad bombers are just the lunatic fringe. Well armed, but lunatic.

"Until America wakes up"? Tell that to the Spanish. They just got bombed for repelling the moors in the last crusade, their participation in Afghanistan and Iraq was just icing on the cake. Yes, that's right, Afghanistan. The war with UN approval. I guess nobody told the terrorists that the UN said it was okay.

"Peace with terrorists"? That's the biggest chimera of them all. They want you dead, they do not care if you are liberal, neocon, or centrist. If you want peace with them you have to put your woman in a headscarf and chuck out all your technology. America needs to wake up? No, sir, you need to wake up.
