I doubt that they are just banning whole subnets, that would be beyond idiotic, and even aol is not that dumb.
and of course there are other sources of spam. does that mean if they cant fight it all at once, they should stop the fight all together?
when it comes down to it, they are in reality affecting very few people (those hosting smtp servers off of their own residential broadband connections who *need* to be able to mass send email to aol customers...
IE, pretty dumb to complain about, when they are doing more good by helping to keep spam out of their customers email.
a) most likely you shouldn't have an smtp server on your residential broadband connection anyways.
b) it is a known fact that a lot of spam comes from the said connections that they banned.
c) just use your isp provided smtp server you idjits. if that doesnt allow you to bcc more people than you want, then either you are spamming, or get smart enough to not have to use your smtp server.
d) this is NOT hard to work around. If I needed a smtp server, I could at this moment probably get hooked up by 6 different people off the top of my head.
e)all in all, this is not a big deal. and yes, this is coming from someone who has in the past and probably will in the future host a webserver etc off of my residential line.
Yes, I would like to be the 40th person to post a big phat

They are selling a sampo/daiwoo plasma 42inch monitor for $2900!
I was at the store today, and copared it to the sony/pioneer models that they had, and I couldn't tell any difference in quality. Although I am not sure what quality feed they had coming in, IE one might see a difference between them w/ a dvd etc.
This is true, but we are talking about americans here.... A huge hell of a lot of us would rather bomb iraq than give up their pickups that they hardly ever use to haul shit, just so they can display their gun racks in their back windows...
They are talking about doing season 5 as an anime series. Which, if done correctly, could be really great.
I loved farscape because it tried to stay away from the star trek cliche, and pretty much succeeded. Also because it was actually very well written, acted, and full of really great one liners that really threw you for a loop.
Watch the last episodes of season 4, and you'll probably see the best sci-fi tv in a lonnnng time.
I do understand how some don't like it, as it is very serial. But on the flip side, I know quite a few people who watched the between-season intro episode where they tried to introduce new people to the series, and absolutely were hooked. I mean, even my sister and her husband, who are not sci-fi nerds started watching it.
Last I heard, Brian Herbert is doing the prequel books to prepare for the book that Frank had notes on for after chapterhouse.
The prequel books were *ok*. I think only those interested in the dune storyline would really enjoy them. They were good enough to keep me reading, rather than some other series books that I ended up just discarding after reading half way through.
I thought the last two books in the series, heretics and chapterhouse were respectable. I wonder whether God Emperor and those will be made into miniseries or not. I am not sure whether GE would make a good miniseries, as its not exactly the most action packed in the world, but rather a bunch of mind games over and over. The last two would make good ones imho, going by what they did w/ children, which I think they did a great job. (saw it last week)
Well, I imagine that they are talking about both the hlds binary, and also the cs binary, ie.so files?
That is a good question though. I am not sure whether mod authors will have to do anything special on the mods linux server end.
True. Unfortunately the bf1942 linux server is so full of bugs and issues, I wouldnt use it for anything that requires reliability. It *has* improved since its initial release, theres no doubt. Hopefully the 1.3.1 release will solve most of the remaining issues.
I run the servers for a washington D.C ~200+ player lanparty Capitol Punishment, and I know that we could use this kind of hardware. At the moment, we have to split our 10player counter-strike cs servers between at least 2 dual cpu boxes w/ scsi etc to excellent performance on lan. I know what I'm talking about, we are coming up on our 6th. Add to this various addons like adminmod, or in our events case, the wwcl plugin to make sure people arent abusing console variables, and you quickly need more horsepower to keep the pings low, and the choke low, so on and so forth.
To some it doesn't matter, but in a competitive environment, you want the fastest shit you can find. And spreading that across 2-4 boxes makes management a bitch. Not mentioning other servers for other games being run at the same time.
Now, the funny question, is what is the CPL going to do, since it's an Intel sponsored event. Although I won't disagree that some dual 3ghz+ xeon servers w/ scsi and dual channel ddr don't already make great game servers for my needs.
I would too when their current game/engine still has more players online daily than pretty much every other FPS combined...
They are working on their new game/engine in the background, while also making intelligent decisions for the future. Steam by itself will allow them to cut out the middle man, and allow them to be able to release global updates quickly and frequently.
Sure, one of you is going to bring up the disaster that was the steam beta 2 release, (wtf were they thinking? lol) but steam is a great concept.
They are also probably waiting on CS2 to be complete or near complete before they will consider releasing HL2. I think they are just going to one day say BOOYAH and release everything online and then start shipping boxes to stores. Otherwise, there wouldn't be so much secrecy on the matter.
Also, don't forget they have scratched and restarted development for TF2 etc numerous times, just like they did for Half-life I might add. And look how awesome THAT turned out.
That isn't true at all. you can play UT on linux, tribes2 on linux, and numerous other mainstream games that I can't remember at the moment.
OH, and you can play hl/cs on linux, w/ winex, which valve even actively works with to help it work well.
Its not native, I agree, but at the moment it would just be too much work to port it over to linux I would imagine. I do hope however that their next game/engine has a linux client.
errr. you forget the original Half-life. They started over, delayed many many times. and Half-life ended up being one of teh best games of all time according to many.
Unfortunately, valve has continued their trend of pushing back their new titles, but on the flip side of that, valve is still making money w/ HL/cs/soon dod/steam etc. so they *are* showing fruits for their labor.
DN 3d owned. I have faith that when they do release a game, it will be good. revolutionary, who knows, but still probably pretty good.
Valve's next game? Im sure it will be pretty damn good as well.
kev
firefly had me at the end of train job, when he kicked the dude into the engine and then turned to the next guy.
but.... I am hearing rumors of firefly being cancelled, or are they just rumors?
I like sg1 too, but I think farscape is the best of all of them. the only sci fi series I enjoyed as much was babylon five.
this season of farscape *has* been lacking though, and what is suprising, is that they only aired the show once a week, so if you missed it, you were screwed, considering all of the plot lines you would miss. plus its on a friday night, when lots of people arent even home.
here is to hoping that they will milk this "fan outrage" for all its worth, people will make sure to watch the last few eps, and it will be re-up'd

no, not the fact that the eps cost so much damn money per ep.... Thats the biggest factor.

Yes, I found it to be pretty good myself. I downloaded it a week or two ago, and couldn't turn it off.
mmmmmmmmmmm. gentoo
try it, you might like it.
I dont get what you mean at all. In fact, it makes no sense what so ever.
true, but the doom3 engine is also being used to make... wait for it... quake4

"want to play a game?" "global nuclear warfare" *misses the good ol days*
Everyone is starting to use bit torrent anyways. Sure, a lot of it goes on in irc, but also on websites, instant message etc.
These *illegal file sharing* channels to suddenly start saying they are Trivia channels, that just happen to share files secondary....
Because god knows every channel on Dalnet seems to have some lamo trivia bot or three....
yep. Penny-arcade is greater than all
