  1. A pleasant surprise on Hominids: The Neanderthal Parallax · · Score: -1

For a site that loves to be L337 and pro-open-source, I'm really enjoying the current surge in visualstudio.net adverts. Maybe it's just me that's getting more than usual? Either way, I'm proud to see slashdot being as two-faced as ever.

I tried twice, and both times I got "it's only been 17 seconds". If only I'd learn to count to 20 everything would be good.

I do not belong to a tiny offshoot of the Liberate Apes Before Imprisoning Apes movement.

Sounds like the gel drives that them there scientists were making a few years ago. Can't find a link anywhere :(

Basically they were storing information on proteins kept inside a 1cm cube. They could get around 10GB in there, but couldn't read it back again. I have *no* idea how they proved that they could write the information onto the proteins if they couldn't read it back. I guess they could read and extra charge / weight / see it through a microscope, but couldn't tell exactly what the information was.

If anyone can find any reference to the gel drives, I'd be appreciative. And send them porn.

You should be kissing the butt of Mr Howard Marcus FreeBSD. He came up with the idea of FreeBSD, but his friend Ronald NothingToDoWithFreeBSD stole the idea and sold it on to MacroShift, who released the OS under the name "Gin Doze". The title suggested an alcohol-induced coma, so the product didn't sell very well at all. It was then that MacroShaft's CEO, Johnny Bottom decided to change the name to reflect a more political stance - Mr Bottom had just read in the newspaper about his friend Basil Smith-Dorchester being wrongly imprisoned. He started the Free Basil Smith-Dorchester campaign (or FreeBSD campaign) and renamed the software in his honour. Hence, FreeBSD.
