I once had a hard drive that wouldn't spin up if the computer had been off a few days. The only way was turning it by 90 degrees every time before booting the computer.
The bull usually isn't injured in French bullfights. Then again, I consider mass animal farming a bigger crime. At least fighting bulls see the sunlight during their lives.
It seems that Vista is going to be a decent piece of software, if even on Slashdot you can read people make positive comments. As I'm probably going to buy a Macbook, I'm really interested whether Vista is going to run on that. Has anybody tried?
One thing that is easily overlooked is the addition of an digital audio out jack on the 15" powerbook. With the 17" being just too big, this makes the Powerbook much more attractive as a desktop replacement if great audio quality is important to you.
X is wrong and renders most fonts way too small, as it defaults to a 72 ppi screen like the ones common in the early nineties. Windows is right, as most of today's screens are around 100 ppi.
No, it's irrelevant. The system offers a new way of organizing, not more. If you have already organized everything in folders, that's fine, but if you're organizing new things, you might just as well use metadata and queries and have a more flexible organization.
Of course the user has to tell the system how to organize things. Whether this means creating folders or adding metadata doesn't matter.
I wonder whether this technology will benefit independent moviemakers. On one hand, it is far cheaper to make a copy of a digital movie than 35mm film, and simpler to distribute, so that independent movie theatres can get hold of copies more easily. On the other hand, I fear that the satellite distribution system might be controlled by the media giants who aren't interested in small moviemakers using their system, charging high fees.
It is antisemite to condemn the killing of Palestinians while not looking at the killing of Israelis. It is perhaps not antisemite, but at least an unacceptable generalization and a proof of ignorance to talk about the conflict in the West Bank referring to "The Jews".
Concerning the Palestinians: If the terrorists actually wanted to have a country, they would not blow themselves up, but they would get themselves together, elect a government and have talks. They don't, as their target isn't peace, but a war which will in the end destroy Israel. Bush and Sharon should just say: "End the terror, and after two years, you will have your own and free country". I bet my buttocks that there wouldn't be two months without a suicide bomber.
My ipod's contents: Roughly 75% from my own CDs, 10% friends. Much of what comes from Kazaa was just a more comfortable way of getting vinyl music on the ipod, but I'd say at most 10% illegally downloaded music on my ipod.
I did a trip to Berlin and back in our Audi A4 with a 85 kW TDI engine. Fully loaded with people and luggage, rolling gently at about 150 kph average over the autobahn and spending three hours in traffic jams on the way back, the car consumed about 50 litres for the trip of exactly 800 km, which is around 6.2l/100km, 38 mpg. Considering the traffic jams, that's an admirable figure.
This is probably going to change in a few years. The lack of democracy and legitimization in the EU's institutions, especially the Commission, has raised some discussion about the legislative process of the EU. During the past years, more and more subjects that the EU makes laws about have fallen into the process of codecision, which means that the Parliament has to agree to every law the Commission or the Council proposes. And in fact, if I'm not mistaken, there is only one field left -- agricultural politics, the ugliest part of the Union -- where the Parliament has nothing to say. It has gained more and more control in the past decade, and it will gain more.
The drop in framerate is not perceptable. VSync makes the card send the frames so that the screen displays exactly one at a time, which is a good thing. Higher framerates result in half frames being displayed because the screen can't keep up, also known as tearing, but not in a smoother animation. If your framerate is too low, increase the refresh rate of your monitor and watch frame rate increase as well.
I don't believe that acting actually helps. I was in the same situation until the age of 18 - trying to find friends acting had backfired as the discrepancy between them and me bothered me more and more. It just doesn't make the part of your soul that's not a geek happy. Especially not when there's women involved. This was less than a year ago.
The secret is to change. To stop being afraid, to become a complete human capable of building relationships. I spent my childhood and youth in front of the computer screen drinking coke. Then I just stopped, and by the help of a few people who were interested in me, became a different person.
Today, I get along well with lots of people, have friends, play music. This hasn't harmed my intellect in any way. My horizon widens every day. The most important thing however is that I feel happy and confident and that I feel capable of building relationships wherever life may take me.
Help your student develop these skills and become aware of these fundamental human interests and needs - he will eventually thank you for it.
I've had XFree (all versions) crash for no reason back in 2003, already in 2D mode, after a few elements had been displayed on screen. I've been thinking I was the only one with this problem, but perhaps I'm not. Are the drivers still doing this?
Well, you can, but iTunes won't let you do it. I guess they did this to make the music industry happy. The Ipod itself is fully DRM-free, you can get out the MP3s by hand using any file manager or terminal, or you can have them exported with proper filenames and everything for example by EphPod.
In this context I remember something Anand Lal Shimpi, Mr. AnandTech, wrote in an editorial when AnandTech was first founded.
Anand was 16 at the time, and it looks like he had gotten some critic along the lines of "how could a 16-year-old competently write articles on hardware". He just stated that the Internet allowed everybody to use the same tools and the same platform, therefore removing any superficial barriers that the real world society might impose - be it age, race, sex or anything else.
This is just as applicable to games. When I'm on the Internet, I don't care who my game partner really is. The only thing I care about is that I can have a good time with him or her. None of the usual social barriers apply.
They've only won one for the continuing death of middle-class businesses and made another step towards a world where you're either a huge corporation or a rightless consumer. People are generally too stupid to understand that it's in the long term bad for them if they buy at Wal-Mart. Markets have to be regulated in some way.
One alternative CD/vinyl place, focusing on everything that's not in the charts, just moved from their old little store into a new shiny building. They are definitely doing well.
Why?
They don't sell the crap everybody else sells. The clerks (who are experienced DJs) know answers to everything. The service is good. They'll order everything for you. They don't bug you when you sit at the stereo for two hours listening to a pile of CDs.
That said, they still have higher prices than you could get on the Internet. But nobody cares about that. I believe that good products combined with good service will always prevail.
Eastern Germany suffers from extreme unemployment (up to 20% in some areas) and has been in an economical crisis since the wall came down. The unemployment is the reason for the collapsing German welfare state.
Creating jobs and building an industry should be the #1 East German priority. The government did the right thing.

Because it's fun.

Carbon filters have existed for a while now, and they will even be mandatory soon in a few EU countries. That would not really be a problem.

My 9500 Pro still doesn't work and just crashes the system hard when 3D acceleration is enabled. Nobody knows this problem and nobody can explain. :(

By using the Microphone port, you could very well blow the microphone preamplifier on your sound card. Use the Line In jack instead.

Actually, it means
"I thinking be probably a pot of slice".
Why should they not refer to their customers as customers?
