Did you even read my post? I said it was an accounting trick, not that putting it somewhere else made the cost go away. I never once said that made it free. As I explicitly said in my last post, THE WHOLE POINT OF MY ARGUMENT IS THAT THERE ARE OTHER FACTORS BESIDES LABOR INVOLVED.

but when you're laid off two weeks before you can collect on your pension...make certain you have your own damn retirement fund. If you're too dumb to do that, you deserve whatever you get.
If I'm laid off tomorrow, I can still collect my pension when I turn 55. Sure there won't be much in it, but I can collect what's there. (I told you we had a good pension.) In addition to that, I have a 401(k) with a company match (100% for the first 3% of my salary I have deposited, and 50% for the next 2%). Besides that I have a ROTH IRA and a Traditional IRA.

    So no more free advice
I am terribly saddened, but some things are worth what you pay for them.

In this world, no one takes care of you but you
I'm sorry that's the kind of life you have. I'm glad mine isn't like that. When I was in the hospital with kidney stones, it took a day for my mother to travel up to visit me in the hospital. In the mean time, my neighbor came and made sure everything was signed and gave them my insurace information and she even went by my house and picked up my laptop and a book from my roommate, so I could get some work done while I was in the hospital, instead of laying there inactive. Other friends came by and brought me things.

If I ever need anything, I have family, friends, and my closest fraternity brother that will do whatever is neccessary, and I would do the same for them. If you honestly have no one that cares about you enough to take care of you when things go wrong, I feel bad for you. So I guess we live in different worlds after all.

Yes, but as long as I'm doing my job better than anyone else could, it doesn't make economical sense to lay me off.

Do companies have pension plans anymore?
Mine does... and a pretty good one at that.

Do they take care of you if you get sick, above and beyond what the law requires?
Yes, as a matter fact, our insurance coverage (which the company pays for most of) is second best in this area.

Either way, call back when you're over 30. Right now, you're 25, and as far as the real world, you don't know shit about shit.
Oh, you are one of those "You are too young to know anything" people. I've been working in IT for 9 years (yes, since I was 16) and I know a thing or two. I'm not so naive that I think they keep me around because of my charming personality. But I work hard, and THAT makes me indespensible, not self created "job security".

Seriously, what does that mean? You can lower your labor costs be 100%? Even if the words were right, is outsourcing free now?
I mistyped... that should be "...costs BY 100%..." and it is correct from an accounting standpoint. Most places put outsourced labor under a different account than employee labor. So, it goes into overhead instead of directly affecting product cost. Yes, it's a stupid accounting trick, but I was trying to illistrate the point that there are OTHER FACTORS besides the cost of labor going into your bottom line. Call back when you learn about accounting. :-)

  4. Re:Focus on Why Do Computers Still Crash? · · Score: 1

But if Americans would work harder and smarter, instead of doing stupid things like spending time embedding "job security" into their code, IT budgets wouldn't need to be so large. If I could pick between replacing 50 American programmers with 50 programmers working in India for half the American salary or 25 HARD WORKING American programmers that I had to pay a little extra, I would take the American programmers. Most businesses would. Why? Because the more Americans you have working, the stronger the American economy. The stronger the American economy, the better your business is doing. It's not always about labor costs, there are other factors involved. I can lower my labor costs be 100%... fire everyone and outsource every department. Is that going to make my business successful? No. Because people that don't work FOR YOUR COMPANY don't have a VESTED interest in your success, and they are going to whatever it takes just to get by. They aren't going to go the extra mile. The problem is, many programmers now act as though they don't have a vested interest in their company. They do the least amount to not get fired. I don't play like that. I give it my best shot, and I do what I can with the time and skills I have. Some might say that's stupid and won't pay off... but my salary has increased 45% in the 3 years I've been here, so I think it has paid off. I'm 25, but they could find someone just out of college that would work for a lot less money than I make. They haven't done that, because they know it's hard to find people with a work ethic anymore.

That's no excuse for not documenting your code, and DEFINITELY not a valid reason to purposely obfuscate it. Can you imagine how far software would have come if people could come into a job after someone has left and pick up where the person left off? Rather than having to start from scratch because the previous person put all sorts of crap in "their" code so no one else could read it? IMO, if you are a good programmer, you don't need to CREATE job security, you will have it. This kind of work ethic (or lack thereof) is why companies are outsourcing programming and support to India.

Also, some of the modchips don't include MS's BIOS code. The one designed based on the work bunni did, simply sniffs the password of the bus. Last I heard, you can't copyright a password. (Well, I guess if it were really long and not numeric, but...)

Seems to me that the answer to that is as obvious as you say the imperfection of the legal system is. How can soldering some IC chips on a PCB be illegal? That doesn't hurt anyone. What it comes down to is when they are sold. In other words, is there a legal reason for someone to buy these. I think the XBox Linux project would be a very good reason to have one, and I would like to have one for that reason. I have an Xbox and several games. If I want a game, I'm going to go out an buy it. I want a modchip just because I love electronics and I like Linux, so I think it would be cool to run it on the Xbox. Microsoft will argue, however, that the main reason people want these chips is for pirating games.

I don't think anyone should be able to tell me what I can and can't do with hardware that I purchased, but it happens everyday. My cable company told me I couldn't modify my box to get free pay-per-view. When I left them, my satellite company said I couldn't modify my card to get all the channels. (I have a friend who PAYS for all the channels, but he has a hacked card, because he wants to see the local networks, and because the cable companies are so greedy, his satellite provider couldn't offer it.) My cell phone provider tells me I can't modify my phone's ESN so that I can have TWO phones with ONE number, so I can leave one in the car and not have to pay a second monthly fee and for more minutes. So, let's don't single MS out, because they aren't the only ones doing this. That doesn't make them right, but look at the whole picture. Not only is this attacking the software giant, but also the Communications industry giants. Laws don't matter when there is that much money behind it.

I really wish it didn't work that way, and there was a time when people actually worked their problems out WITHOUT calling in a lawyer, but everybody these days is greedy, and they want to sue and get $millions in damages.
