  1. Can't wait for this all to get sorted out on Fix the Bugs, Secure the System · · Score: 2, Interesting

Damn it's tough to code in C these days, keeping track of all the stuff that one needs to to be reasonably secure.

Not to mention the added overhead of making the system secure from semantic errors. Yeesh, it's a good think I get paid a lot for my C work.

But that's all okay, becuase (finally) technology, like Java, C# (okay this one sucks but whatever), etc that will help out and provide a truly _secure_ development platform.

I jsut hope they still pay me as much when this stuff finally gets easy, like it should be.

Damn, doesn't MTV remember the past? They've tried this sort of thing before, and where did it get them. I think it was in 95 or 96, they considered releasing a similarly themed "Media Box" that was part laser disc, part cd player, part tape deck, part vcr, etc, etc

Needless to say it failed (You don't see any around anymore, do you?). During it's short lifespan (Remember those annoying commercials with the flashing colors and slow, loud beat?), a friend of mine picked one up.

I've never seen a worse piece of consumer grade electronics in my life. The laser for the cd must have been loose or something, because it would skip on just about every damn cd. And the tech support? It was a nightmare.

Basically my friend was told to bugger off because they had stopped production. In the warrenty it covered against this, so he was SOL.

And now they want to try this sort of thing again? God I hope they do a better job.

  3. Horror Story on When Making a Comprehensive Retrofit of your Code... · · Score: 3, Informative

My firm went through this sort of thing just two years ago. The PHB at the time decided, for some reason, that our 300,000 lines of semi-poorly written C code, and 50,000 associated lines of Java (Dont' ask).

Anyway, it took 7 of us over 2 months to get even halfway done. The pressure the boss was putting on us was awful, and he didn't really even understand what we were doing, even though he was the one demanding it. I think she read it in a trade mag somewhere. God I'd do a lot more work if she didn't read that shit.

Anyway, about halfway through the "Great Leap Forward" (as we [appropriatly] named it) the boss quit, and the next boss, who so far has been fairly clueful. He didn't think the whole deal was needed, but he was pressured by the former bosses husband (the CTO) to get it done. Seriously.

Hope yours goes better than ours. From what we did, heres some tips I can give you.

    1. Be consistant through the whole thing.
    2. Make sure everything is planned before you start. This was the one part we got right.
    3. The team you have should have worked together before, because this sort of task requires previous knowledge of eachother.

Other than that, my condolences. Or maybe it will work better for you.

    Good luck!

I guess none of us should be surprised at this. After all, we know how the big distribution houses like to do things, and how we (the consumers) really have no choice.

Well, I hope this gets people angry, because it's really such an obvious ploy to line Sony's pockets with our money. I really don't see how these companies can keep this sort of thing up without any sort of outcry from those of us that own the products that we can't do what we want to with.

I mean, geez, if Sony doesn't want me hacking up it's boxes, why did it _sell_ them to me? Come on Sony, ligthen up!

What the hell are they wasting their time for (and our money) on little stuff like this? It's like the federal government has no capability to distinguish between minor crimes and major ones.

If we don't watch out, the next war (after terrorism) will be on software. Damn, imagine if the BSA ever got to use guns. *shudder*

That's not a good thought. Sigh, I'd better stop posting to /. and go get the papers ready for my companies upcoming audit.

This strange coalition isn't good for everyone though, and Sun is aware of that. At this point we (the Open Source People) should indeed be cautious of Sun, but not overly so. They have good reason to be with us on this, and we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss them

Not that we should worship them either... once we beat down Passport they'll probably come up with their own worse version.

A lot of /.'ers are probably going to question the reasoning behind giving middle schoolers laptops, and to them I can only say that just _having_ the laptops will increase they're technological awareness. It's espically important up here in Maine, where there is almost no high-tech industry.
