Years ago I used to sell computers (in the usa), and once some idiot switched the power supply from 120 to 220 on a then "state of the art" 386/25 machine that wasn't plugged in. It was on clearance, and of course whoever bought it returned it the same day.
I ended up buying it for parts extremely cheap, took it home and discovered the PSU problem, switched the switch back and it worked just fine for years. Cheapest PC I've ever owned.
I also once shorted out the circuit board on the bottom of a hard disk. It was plugged in but sitting loose on the top of the case. It got jostled, shorted on the case with a pop and the odor of burning electronics. Died immediately. The pcb had a trace that was fried- a big brown scar; I kept it around for a while to remind me to be more careful when working around these things.
As a dentist and a human being, this really pisses me off. This is a perfect example of overextended greed and misplaced blame. Don't they understand that they're harassing some of the very people who actually PAY for their music? The only solution to this sort of nonsense is for someone to allow themselves to get taken to court. If you could then manage to generate enough negative publicity they would be forced to drop the whole thing. I'd love to see a website with pictures of SOCAN execs, publicly humilitating them personally for being greedy bastards.
There was a similar flap about 10 or 15 years ago where BMI was shaking down bar and club owners that had live bands covering copyrighted music. I could almost understand it since they were making money by offering the music as entertainment but threatening to sue dentists is ridiculous.
The strong arm tactics employed by MS, SCO, etc., reflect an implicit lack of faith that their products can compete fairly in an open market. If these companies really believed that their products and services were superior they wouldn't need to force people to use them.
BS? Evidence? LOL! I guess all those fossils I dug out of the bottom of the Colorado river canyon in Arizona were put there by God because they looked cute!
You reason like a creationist. The earth isn't the right size and distance from the sun so Humanity can exist. Humanity exists because the earth is the right size and distance from the sun. It's a fine point, but the essential one.
Pay twice? These pricks want us to pay over and over again. The current direction of the greedy bastards is to convince congress (or the relevant rule making body) that people should be forced to pay for everything that they COULD be forced to pay for. When it comes to disposable intellectual property be it music, movies or weather reports, computers make it technologically possible to force people to "pay per use". It's like installing a vending machine for your product in everyone's home, worldwide. Since it's basically been proven that copy protection doesn't work they want to make it illegal for anything to be free.
WHY WHY WHY does the RIAA insist on being draconian bastards? Why do they insist on forcing this kind of crap down everyone's throats?
Didn't cassette tapes and players have a surcharge tacked on to pay companies and artists for the inevitable copying that would occcur?
Why won't the RIAA settle for this? I mean I understand that they have a problem in that their product can be instantly stolen from the comfort of anyone's living room but even so, why not settle for the simple solution?
I actually PREFER buying a copy of music CD's. The disk label is usually more durable, the insert often has art and other stuff that interests me.
Oh, come on. The only thing that EVER kept voting even remotely fair was bi(or multi)-partisan supervision. This is implicit and understood by both major parties. There have been "shenadigans" for years by both parties. The idea has always been that the cheating would generally just even out.
Machines are never going to insure accurate vote counting if the people reading off the numbers are corrupt.
HA! $60? I got about 5 of the original model M keyboards at a flea market for $5 each. Best keyboards ever made. You can't kill them. I went through 3 keyboards in a year until I found these things. Huge, weigh a ton and SOLID.
What this will do is give *lightly* armoured vehicles the ability to resist rpg's, but IED's etc. will continue to be a problem. It's just measure/countermeasure again. If RPG's are rendered ineffective then other weapons will fill the void.
At some point you have to decide if it's worth the cost to equip every humvee, etc., with expensive electric armour that ONLY protects against these copper based rpg's. Yeah, troops lives are at stake but ROI doesn't look too good. Time to think outside the box? Political solutions anyone?
What color is the sky on the planet where YOU live? Profit not the goal? Explain THAT one to the shareholders! To be fair, what you are asserting may occasionally be true with a small business, but i sincerely doubt that you could find many examples where shareholders would take profit over mission.
Look, the whole POINT is to make money. Why else would these companies exist? Philanthropy? How do YOU make a living? You're right when you say that they won't cut prices without reason. That's what competition in a free market is supposed to control; when some other company provides a comparable service at a lower price you'll see them cut prices. Unfortunately, because of the way cable is regulated in my state, cable companies enjoy vitual monopolies in cable service but DSL does put pressure on their ISP business.
The problem with cable ISP's and oil companies isn't greed, it's lack of real competition.
Well, hacking a little box like this isn't (to me) particularly interesting. It does make me think that in 5 years or so, when your cell phone is also your camera, pda, MP3 player, portable wireless broadband storage device, etc., and Microsoft, the RIAA, etc. have bribed congress to allow them to hard-wire draconian DRM into a device that no sane person would want to live without, some nerd somewhere will figure out how to hack it.
Ok then is there any concensus about which distro is the best? I realize that there are a lot of variables here but I would think that stability, support and documentation would be three big factors.
Sure we could process the nuclear fuel on the moon! It's easy! All we have to do is set up an entire mining and refining and launch complex complete with those P2 centrifuges the Iranians aren't using. Then all we have to do is transfer it to the launch facility and put it in a mars-bound orbit.
Seriously; the cost for producing usable nuclear fuel on the moon would make the cost of the rover look tiny.
I agree- it's art. I can't believe how he textured the paint to make it look like rusted metal. This guy went above and beyond the norm with this thing.
Question is-how much would people PAY for this kind of mod? This is gallery grade material.
p.s.- this guy totally set himself up for the/. effect by putting all those pix on one page.
ok, he used the disk for lift, but you can't really tell where the control surfaces are. I'd guess from the in-flight pitch (and lack of an obvious elevator} that simple engine power adjustment controls altitude. The only other control seems to be a rudder- is he using the engine struts or the engines nacelles themselves?
Fair point about roast-there's no reason why they couldn't vary it more all other things being equal but I'm certain it's a consistency in marketing thing.
I don't know about the ageing but if I was running a huge chain I wouldn't trust my roasting to the twentysomethings working the shops. Much simpler to centralize.
One thing Mc'd's and starbucks have in common is that no matter where you go the product is the same. Everyone might not like it but it's consistent.
If you had to drink the swill that passes for coffee around here you'd understand why I appreciate starbucks so much. I'm sure there's plenty of better cups of coffee around, but not near me.
Um, isn't this just a matter of taste? I *like* darker roasted coffee. IFAIK Starbucks does some basic things to produce a consistently high quality product; they start with quality beans, roast them darker than is usual, grind them immediately before use, brew with more ground coffee (the thing that increases the caffeine content) and most importantly they DON'T let it sit around and get stale - they throw it out and brew fresh after an hour.
Judging by the success of starbucks I'd say a lot of other people feel the same.

The whole thing stinks.
In fact I WAS taught about the canada invasion in an american public elementary school. The spin was that it was a stupid idea.
