The only reason people have broadband is to get the content provided by content providers. All the telecoms revenue is due to the presence of these providers and their content.
I use bittorrent to timeshift tv shows (or essentially record shows) that if
I had the means (a TIVO or similar DVR) I would record in another way. But why should the right to timeshift a show be only given to those that can afford the technology.
I would just record a tv show (in the most cases Scrubs) but then I would be stuck only watching it on a VCR equipped TV (unless I then copied the tape.)
This lets me watch the episodes if I miss them or re-watch them over and over until the DVD comes out which I would then purchase.
"essentially eroding our ability to formulate coherent thoughts in writing when called upon to do so."
they are only incoherent to those unfamilar with the slang. People in the know can understand what the writer is expressing, and as more of those exist and as they age, the level of understanding will only increase (until replaced by more degenerate slang.)
This is just other instance of the standard being replaced griping about it.
"Tests are a very rough measure of your skill. They're used to broadly separate candidates into maybe-acceptable and useless."
Sounds like someone only got B+'s in school . . .
Maybe they take the fact that he showed for an interview showed that he was interested in the company and the job.
And I don't know of a company that even when they actively recruit candidates for job opening, doesn't interview them before they make a decision to hire them, and the interview is so the company can further assess the the quality of the candidate.
Why would anyone think this would be interesting? He would be younger and probably more whiny. He would be stuck on Tatooine. And he wouldn't have any Jedi powers or knowledge of the force. What's the point?
Now maybe following the adventures of a younger Han Solo, that might be exciting.
"I gotta tell you, this more "realistic" style of cartooning is much more interesting than the anime style of Miyazaki. For one, the 3 dimensional depth aspect is added through the use of very well thought out shading, so the characters seem more alive than most other cartoons.
With the exception of Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka), which succeeded because of the power of the story more than anything else, Miyazaki's work pales in comparison to the screenshots shown here."
Translation: This doesn't look as cartoony so my manhood won't be harmed if I like it.
It's also why I play x-box and not gamecube.
How 3 screenshots can trump the whole filmography of Miyazaki just proves this poster has no idea what he speaks of.
"The 'clear and present' danger at this time is 'terrorism', and is their knowledge of spy satellites really going to change things?"
One example comes to mind: suspected terrorist training camp. If you don't see terrorists training, its just a bunch of buildings/tents. If they know when a satellite is passing over, they can just go inside and not train at those times.
"I'm going to try to pre-empt another claim, that of the People's Republic of China. In my opinion, they are not yet a threat, and policy can not be planned around hostilities"
Yes, but recon is needed to see if a country is becoming hostile. Satelittes provide info about troop movements (like hey, they just moved a bunch of troops and ships toward Taiwan,) industry and other things.
And if we are secret about how much spying we are doing on a country, then they won't know about it to get mad at.
I agree. This is an adbenture film that just happens to be set to in space. There are not any real sci-fi themes beyond the fact they are in space ships.
They have a place to provide feedback. I want to be helpful and tell them about the faults in how the rank sites (the ones discussed in all the earlier comments; especially giving to much weight to domain names.)
But I don't want to help them compete with Google.
While it started out slow, DS9 was the deepest Trek series, because for the most part everything was confined to the station rather than a roving ship exploring new worlds, the plots revolved more around the characters and larger story arcs, rather than on what wierd new planet they'd have to deal with.
Add epic wars and space battles, mysticism, emotion, cunning and deceit and you get the best Trek Series. All I need now is a thousand dollars to buy the DVDs
Regardless of the fact that the technology probably isn't accurate, if such a device is ever perfected and put into widespread use, it would be the end of normal social interactions (which maybe the slashdot crowd desires.)
But no longer could someone tell a white-lie to protect a friends feeling, or let someone down gently, or tell their kids half-truths to protect them until they are older.
Bluffing in poker would be obsolete. Millions of people would lose their jobs as their skills in marketing and sales would be rendered null.
Lastly, the institution of marriage will be destroyed as millions of wives ask their husbands if "they look fat."
At least looking at the picture for makign antibubbles with dishwater, these merely look like bicelles. Basically, the detergents line up so that their hydrophobic tails interact and their hydrophilic head groups form a barrier on each side, just like a lipid bilayer in a cell membrane.
Air is in the tail layer, and water inside and outside.
too bad SCO doesn't own the patents nor copyrights.

I'm not a CS major, I'm a biology major, but I seem to know more about or at least like computers more than some of the CS majors I know.
I always wondered why they would major in a field that had no interest.

slight correction the cards were for SNAP, the first set in the the next block of cards, code name SNAP, CRACKLE, POP. SNAP does not equal Coldsnap.

its your duty to overthrow tyranny
PBF won the Baltimore CityPaper annual comic contest a couple years ago . . .
I'm allowed to tape the tv so why can't I timeshift a scrubs episode if i i missed it.
Why do we need robots everywhere, interacting with us? Am I the only one out there that doesn't find this idea of a future society appealing?

also if you don't let the program install then you never agreed to the EULA

How do they expect me to pay for these products if they don't let me make my own money?
this is basically giving proof for what most of slashdot already knew. I for one bought more cd's in Napster's hey-day then I do now.
