I'm going to have to move to Canada if I ever want to see a white Christmas again.
You might be out of luck, here in Toronto we've had abnormally high temperatures. In fact, we havn't had a decent snowfall yet (no accumulation) and I don't think the temperature in December ever went below zero.
I believe you can just do eval(document.theform.hours.value + 1) if you want to get a number. I think the eval function is extremely powerful in JavaScript.
I'll admit Microsoft products aren't perfect, hell they have a lot of problems. But I mean, claiming that every alternative you've used is better? I think that's complete bullshit.
I know a lot of people on here look at Linux with adoring eyes, but come on, it's not ready for the desktop. I want to install an OS, and have it work. My printer. My camera. My weird NIC. My DVDRW burner. My 2 month old Video Card. Maybe I should go Mac then? That really doesn't solve the problem because it's hardware controlled (though I do have a Mac and love it). But Mac's office suite is - surprise! - Microsoft Office. Open Office sucks, period. Make it fast on OSX and maybe i'd say otherwise.
Anyways, the whole point of this is that claiming that all alternatives available are better is a pretty broad and stupid statement. I would say I even enjoy Office 2007 quite a bit.
That's not really true. I've seen irresponsible drivers who both speed and do less than the speed limit. Unfortunately, those who do under the speed limit are often more of a risk, since the "flow" of traffic is much higher than the 1 or 2 people going so slowly. I'm sure you can see why that would be bad.
Maybe it's different because I live in Canada, but on our major highways in Ontario (i.e. the 401 through Toronto), the Flow of traffic is often much higher than the speed limit (speed limit: 100km/h, average flow is 120). Those who wish to do 100km/h or less may do so in the right lane, though doing less will get people annoyed. Those going faster do so in the left lane, and if a car that is going 90km/h suddenly appears in the left lane (i.e. the move over), it's going to cause a lot of shit.
I'm kind of confused, all the posts here on Slashdot talk about how Bill Gates shouldn't be president because [insert other person here] would be better. Or that he ran a company convicted of being an illegal monopoly.
Why isn't anyone discussing how his years of experience both managing a bank account the size of a small country's GDP and running a huge corporation would be beneficial/detrimental to him being a President? Seems to me like everyone here is arguing emotion. For example, "I don't like him" isn't a useful tidbit of information.
In case you're too lazy to read it, it's a P4 1.7, 512MB ram, 1.8GB hard drive space and a ATI Radeon 9500 or Nvidia GeForce 5800. The only possible gripe is the requirement of 128MB vRam and DX9.0, but any DX9.0 compatible card usually has 128MB vRam. I mean, I bought my system 2 years ago and it was already "old" then, and it's a P4 2.4 with 1GB of ram and an ATI Radeon 9800. When I bought it it was $400cdn (refurbished). Seriously, these requirements are not that high, and your entire argument is based on the fact they are.
So, good idea spending $600 on a PS3 that is awkard to use for anything except for games, instead of paying much less for a new computer that can both play games and do development to replace your obvious 10-year old shit box.
I really wish slashdot would just link the real news item instead of the crappy ones it always seems to find. There wasn't even an image on the one they linked.
Technically the graphics in the game are CGI as well as both are generated by computers. I think you meant they used pre-rendered video instead of real-time rendered graphics.
I'm surprised nobody has noticed this yet. If you load any page which contains frames, where the frames contain a large amount of HTML (or just text for that matter), the CPU will spike to 100% for some period of time that is related to the amount of HTML within the frame. I've tested this numerous times and it's a huge problem. IE6 does not show this issue at all. Go ahead, try it out. What's really interesting is while it's at 100% CPU usage, it will yield the CPU to other processes (if another process requires some CPU), but not to itself.
I hope they fix it, but something tells me they won't until I drum up some angry mobs.
This is true. I play Warcraft with my fiance as well, though not as much lately.
In the beginning we used to play a lot, and we levelled 1-60 together and it was really great. After that we did the hardcore raiding thing together.. MC, BWL, AQ40.. typically everynight 5 nights a week, and weekends were off. Anyways, it got to the point where it was a second job and we weren't enjoying it, so we quit. Now we're back playing guildless and just playing alts. It's so much better when you avoid the end-game, because the end-game sucks you in eventually.
Honestly, I'm only going to respond to a few things in this post to try and show you why Linux will never be on the desktop in its current form.
And this is one of the "features" of Linux vs. Windows. If you WANT "binary drivers that Just Work", go with Windows.
Just Work. Do you know why people want things that Just Work? Because it's a pain in the ass if they don't. Why can't drivers work? Don't give me bullshit about it not working with other kernels, I don't care, and neither does everybody else who just wants to use a computer. If it's not doing it now, figure it out. I don't care if it's not a binary, I don't want to see it compile, and I don't want compilation errors, or an error telling me to go get gtk or some other library.
No easy install/uninstall: Sounds like you are carping about the Linux systems themselves. As far as your BINARY APPLICATION goes -- keep it in a single directory (tree). Uninstall? Remove the tree. You want to get fancy? Combine that with bundling into a RPM.
Maybe after I "get fancy" I can get a GUI too, huh? Nobody knows what a tree is, nobody can manage directory structures, and why the hell should they have to? Make a fucking install/uninstall screen, have it manage it itself. Or just copy OSX, and have everything in a.app file which can be dragged to the trash. I was hoping the Linux community could come up with something more original though, and certainly something more "fancy" than "oh, just delete the directory it's in". Good work.
Actually that's all I'm going to say, it's frustrating to see people who think like this. You can use bash? Great. vi? Great. Emacs? Wonderful. Nobody cares, windows is popular because nobody cares, and maybe you should understand that. No? Then don't bitch about Linux not being used.
I think the biggest problem is that a lot of IT companies don't trust their employees enough to allow them more free time on the job.
Where I work, we have a 7 foot projector with Xbox and Xbox360 hooked up, and frequently a few employees will go and play games against each other for an hour or two.
Does work still get done? Of course. But nobody likes to work all the time, and video games are a good alternative to say surfing aimlessly around the web, because this way you get to leave the desk and interact with co-workers.
Why so many companies seem to think you *have* to work every minute you're there baffles me, it's very unproductive. As for the state of my company, we're #1 in our field, and doubling growth every year. It's a mid-size company, and maybe that's why this works, it's small enough that the employees feel (and are rewarded) regarding to company success.
Nice try, but self-preservation has something to say about that.
If you're 1 meal from dying, and no chance of getting food aside from the guy sitting next to you eating, who won't share as he's in the same situation, do you think you'd just sit there and die?
Sorry, instincts dictate that you're going to do something, even if it leads to the other's death. You're human, I'm human, we have instincts, we have self-preseveration: we're animals, first and foremost, no matter how morale we may seem with food in front of us.
As for the raping and such, that's bullshit, and shouldn't happen.
This right here is the fundamental problem with religion. "I know what I think and you can't question me because I'm allowed to think that. And I'm right."
Look, the guy was just pointing out a flaw with the arguement. The flaw is, believing in something with no proof. If you want to believe it (and it so fits as you state), then BELIEVE. Please, I have nothing against that. But for God's sake ADMIT that you could be wrong.
Nothing bothers me more than people like you, who won't even listen to the opposing side, who get their back up when anyone questions their "faith". You can believe in anything you want, and you might be right, but you have to accept the fact that you could also be wrong.
I'm sure the crusades caused near as much damage, for a "lesson" in religion. I'm sure it wasn't a billion, but it was a large amount. Actually, let's just add up all the wars fought where one group is trying to "teach" the other a lesson, and see how many people have died.
If the asteroid doesn't kill us, we'll kill ourselves. So maybe the lesson would be good, in the long run. Maybe we'd unite and stop fighting (9/11? Invading Iraq in response? etc etc etc)

Okay, good point, except that now you've had to replace the core GUI which Microsoft worked so hard on, the "revolutionary" start bar/button which prompted windows 95 to be different from windows 3.1, and added a MacOSX dock clone. Not only that, you want to add a skinning interface to change the look completely.
Furthermore, it's still at risk for malware/viruses. Regardless of the fact that it's the most popular, this is still something that isn't pleasant.
All this, to not buy a Mac? Good work. Personally, I'd rather just buy the computer and be able to use it without having to do a shit load of stuff, and be at risk for spyware/malware/shitware.
God you people piss me off. First, and foremost, everyone always claims in the battle as to whether an XP machine is secure on the net or not that the pivotal factor is updates. Windows sucks unless you get the updates, and you see all over/. people saying sysadmins should tell users to update, to stay updated.
So they come out with a solution, autoupdating, and programs telling you to update. And now you bitch and moan about the updates? They got rid of "never remind me again" for idiots who will just click it to get it to shut up. Granted MSN isn't probably all that important to be updated, but what if this was a major security patch? Stop being so hypocritical.
