Do i want to make money off them? Of course, they're my job and my hobby. But a lot of what they taught was irrelevant or not interesting, and certainly not practical. There's interest, and then there's stupidity, where it just goes TOO far.

Are different. I've seen it through all my friends, and most people who are +/- 5 years of my age (22). The fact is, we love learning. But we love learning about different things, things we like, stupid things.. Sometimes I sit around and read about something stupid (N. Korea one day) for a solid 8 hours for no reason at all. University's environment, and i hear this over and over, is just stifling to creativity. You have to do what they say, you have to do a crapload of work in a very specific area (your major), and you just don't have time to sit in a library or on the internet and learn about random things.

So why do we rush through uni just for a degree? To get a decent paying job that gives us enough free time to do what we want. That's why university sucks, that's why we hate it but need it, that's why everyone bad mouths it. I realize i made some generalizations, so forgive me, i'm just going by what i've seen.

They'd never try to completely tear down pirated copies of XP. Think about it, if they FORCE users to buy the OS and completely stop pirating, then the kids (yes, usually it's the kids in the house who are the sysadmin) will not buy it, and move the computer to Linux or something else. The fact is, piracy is the reason MS has such a great userbase. Plus, what you use at home, business will be forced to use in the workplace. Stopping piracy would be the end of microsoft's OS monopoly.

To give a very interesting example, I "heard from a friend" that certain new dev platforms were released by some MS employees under direction of their manager on BT and kazaa to increase usage and promote it.

Erm, not to troll or anything, but i don't know if you visit some of the bigger bittorrent sites. They usually have full albums for a lot of artists, and if you look just a little harder (ie. google) you can often find the more obscure ones. Failing that, there's always Limewire which is pretty damn good. Honestly, getting a free full album in good quality isn't hard at all now, especially with BT.

Ya, except those who do aren't the majority. If the majority of people drove drunk, we'd have a series road problem out there. He said the majority, not specific instances of dumbass.

The law is not there to uphold the beliefs of society. It is there to maintain order.

Order according to whom might i ask? The current ruling political body? If it is, i thought this was a democracy in which the political body represents us. If this is the case, by induction society's rule is that which should be represented. No, perhaps you meant religious? Which religion? And i thought church and state were supposed to be separated, so that makes no sense. So i don't see who's "order" we're supposed to maintain. Obviously if you go against the majority of societies opinion, there wont be order because people will eventually revolt.

does this. He owns easily over a few thousand miss-spells, and offers services to buy up expired domains. There's really 2 tricks to this service.
The first is to have a program to find domains that expire, and find them the day of expiry so you can pick them up before others trying to do the same. Of course, some domains will do better (ie. miss-spell of slashdot) than others (ie. miss-spell of some joe-blow site).
The second is to target the material on it to the types of visitors it would get. Of course, with the new domain ad pages from google, it makes this really easy. This is a huge business, honestly, you have no idea how many people, when they get to the wrong page, go through and click on an advertisement.

So how well does this do? He makes 6 figures canadian a year on it, and that's not including business derived from his own programs to find expired domains. Furthermore, he's my age (22) and still in university. How can you argue with something that brings that type of money for doing so little work?

Something similar to this happened in Canada, namely involving U.S. DirecTV. (Un)fortunately, DTV signals get to canada just as well as the rest of the united states, and furthermore, you can get pirated DTV boxes and cards to decrypt the network and watch it for free. For a long time it was a "grey" area due to one very similar reason: You can't buy directTV here. If you can't buy it, you're not stealing it. As such, there has been rulings about it, and Bell argued that they offer a service similar to DTV and thus this is unfair loss of profits (Bell's potential profits).

Anyways, to sum it up, the court ruled in favour of the citizens, as you can't buy DTV here so they should offer it before complaining.

Now, that's Canada's courts, i'm not sure how America's operates, but i have a feeling it's borderline shitty.
