Plus the crew made it abundantly obvious that they were politically and ideologically driven and this affected the story, in interviews and their social media. So there was a backlash. In response the cast and crew pulled the standard socjus PR movie of developing an antagonistic relationship with the fans which certainly didn't help things.
Combined with the general shittiness, contempt, and oversaturation of the franchise its no wonder things are as they are. Say what you will about the prequels. They were shitty but at least they were shitty with more original stories and much less rabid agenda pushing behind them.
Isn't the point of AI, so that people don't have to bother? Even more so than coding?
