They like the support that Sun provides with thier OS and how it's been grown to be rock solid. Yada, yada, yada. Cut to the posts here by people that probably have never seen a Sun box let alone owned/used one and I'm not shocked.
I am on a sun Box. I am posting for it. this machine is been running for Last 6 years. Its an Ultra 10 440MHz. Reliability means Sun, nothing else.
I am writing this post from a Sun Machine. A Sun Ultra 10 to be precise. Which was last powered down 4 months ago. And this machine has been running endlessly, with average reboot gap of around 8 months, for the past 6 years. The only thing that has ever failed is one of the RAMS which went bad and this led to shutting down the machine for around 15 minutes.
Do you expect this sort of reliability from Dell? Your applications may be more suited for linux now, but there are still tasks which we run in VLSI design. Which require a lot of CPU cache. The MHz is not really important. All that matters is the consistant 100% CPU utilization for 6 months on a 4 CPU 750MHz machine and not a single powerdown, and no faliures. Try running a Pentium or Athalon 6 months flat out.
Comparing Sun to an Intel is like apples to oranges. Both are for a different purpose
if SCO succeeds and we end up with our back against the wall we can put something else on those boxes and carry on.
I disagree. Migrating will not be so easy. And also while the time linux was used SCO may ask people to pay up the 'license fee'.
If the likes of IBM were to cave in to SCO the landscape would change dramatically. Headlines in the WSJ and NYT about IBM giving up Linux or big companies having the shell out big payouts after being sued would catch management's attention, and darkness would descend.
Welcome to mordor. But it is unlikely to happen. If SCO really had something concrete things would be much different now. If was a gamble by SCO. If you are dying may as well fire such shots. There is a proverb in my language which says when loosely translated "The support of a straw for a drowning man". SCO is going down and in panic they are trying to hang on the whatever they can
Kill Bill was a surprise. But on second thoughts you never expect the Pulp fiction chap to churn out shoddy things. Though it was too violent for some people's taste, the action scenes are choreographed to perfection. No CGI etc and pure raw martal arts and it beats matrix hands down in the fights. The volume one of Kill Bill was released this year. Check out IMDB
You cant have your cake and eat it too. India is a better and more profitable bet for software, so it is like this. Indians never ask Ford and GM to go back. Capitalism works both ways. You cannot be expected to hark on free trade blah blah blah and then oppose it. India used to be very closed, almost communist, and it was the US and Europe which tried to steer India towards capitalism through the world bank. This was to be expected. And in case you are thinking $2 a day worker you are wrong. The cost of operating a center in India is about 60% of operating in the US not 10 times less. Salaries are not the only criteria. People here get earned very well due to dollar rupee exchange rate. The thing that is much cheaper in India is subcontracting. Subcontracting in the US is about 25000$ a month and in india it is as low as 2000$ a month, and the engineer gets paid enough to own a TV, Refridgerator, comp, rent an apartment or own a car/Two Wheeler.
Hmm not really. Given enough resources and motivation, it is not that daunting a task. With internet being taken into control everywhere and watchdogs sitting, it may not be that difficult.
Ever read the book, "The Silicon Samurai", the cracker in that book was very clever, a master of the art. Still he got caught. Why? Because crackers, virus writers, DDoS organisers have one thing in common. They want fame. They cant sit without leaving clues. History teaches us that the greatest thieves and criminal got caught due to their hunger for fame. This will happen here also. Though i am not to sure if that is a very good thing, coz when such showdowns happen a lot of innocent people suffer.
Grrreat, I will give slashdot credit. My dependable source of news. News for Nerds stuff that matters. Or should be rename it, to 'Gossip for nerds'.
The article says M$ approached google for purchase and were told to get lost. And slashdot says Google considering to merg with M$. Agreed you editors are busy people but please do atleast a little research before posting anything. Or you just dont care maybe?
Yes you are cynical. The **AAs are just against anything which says DIGITAL, however if you talk FM, cable, Airwave where the Blasphemous word does not appear, they seem to be pretty okay with it. What MIT is doing is creating a simple cable radio network, and this should not be a problem with RIAA
Again, I just cannot figure why we still persist with nuclear, oil, coal, with all the attendant problems (pollution, wars over oil, etc), when we could cover a small proportiion of the deserts of the world with solar cells, and the roofs of our buildings, and the coasts with huge offsiore wind farms (British Wind Enrgy Association page) & tidal turbines, and have all the power we need?
Because its already there, coal, oil and nuclear are established. Non-Conventional is intruding, and oil corporations do not want to be sidelined. Have you ever seen a big corporation push for alternative technologies in the senate? Even Honda etc., dont really launch campaigns.
And then there is practicality and political will. It does not exist. Your avg politician is not bothered. Unless its like there is no oil and no coal, nobodys gonna wake up. Look at Brazil only when Oil bills turned hefty and people started complaining, they shifted to ethanol(from sugar). So when some sunny country decides(people decide) they are not going to starve for oil, they will force the govt to act and in a few decades time we will have them using the Sun. Cant Resist this
Maybe Sun actually has a Future;-)
And AMD motherboards. I once used on, to take out the processor heat sink clamp. And it slipped. And I had a nice hole, in the motherboard that is. before you get ideas. Howeber the Vendor repaired the vracks for free.
It got rid of the original problem of applications crashing as well. Moral: If your computer occasionally freezes use a screwdriver. Works best with AMD
And before you ask the Vendor was Kobian, yes the one that makes cheap(really cheap) mobos.
Maybe yes. But why. No company would like gets its reputaion tarnished. Nokia has a big industry share.
Lets get to the economics too. Adding such a thing with adequate protection mechanisms will require approximate 10000 gates microchip, plus some analog circuitry. This increase in cost does not justify this.
Moreover batteries are not replaced much nowadays(in GSM). Battery life for a meduim user is around 18 months, and after that time many people change phones. And one thing what people discount is that if such a thing happened we will have thousands of exploding phones, not just one or two. This is more of a freak error. Maybe some nokia phones have a defect which is masked by good quality batteries, or maybe batteries are not designed properly to take such loads.
If you are really worried about this, don't. Your battery wont just explode. first the symptons come. If your battery heats up excessively while talking change it. And buy good quality batteries, manufactured by reliable manufacturers. Not necessarily nokia could be any comply
FUD, true FUD, nothing of this sort happened. The only way in the current batteries to find out wether it is a nokia, is to include extra circuits. I have disassembled enough batteries to know theydont have any such thing inside.
And before you think that maybe the current characteristics can be used, it is not possible. Current, voltage etc will change with change with temp and also with time.
Only thing may be that nokia batteries may come with current draw protection and may be more resistant to an inherent defect in the phones
Note fellas, though Bonnnie says reiser4 series is worst, reiserfs is one of the good ones, hanging on above avg in all counts!
Me bit confused here, arent file systems which come new(like ext3 etc) supposed to be better than the older ones!?

Though I am a die hard AMD supporter, i have to admit Intel has really pulled one up on AMD this time. The 64bit 3200+ is just about 15-20% faster than the stock and barrel Intel 32bit 3.2 GHz. Bad news for AMD this is, considering the retail price of these babies is 450 & 800$ (Normal and FX).
This summer Europe is reeling under a severe heat wave which has killed several people and also led to cattle deaths.
In case of temparature rising further, people may start using air conditioning but I guess the natural wild life as we know it will be extinct and we will have the tropics movin northwards. Already Mosquitos and flies have started showing up in various places where they were never seen before
Also think about the tropical diseases to which the north folks have absolutely no immunity, epidemics anyone? The article is extremely shallow or too ironic for me to figure out. The possibility of new diseases, epidemics and extensive wildlife destruction is looming and the authors are concerned about maritime shipping routes!!
Hmm, Maybe you should start protesting with General motors selling its cars in India and China and other Asian counteries, or maybe with Coke and Pepsi killing off the local cola market with their marketing blitz,...
Globalization was intiated by you people. As long as you can have your Nike shoes for cheap, employing cheap labour is okay, but when it comes to you yourself, then you have a problem.
Wake up dude, welcome to the new global order, the borderless workd.

Yes respect is needed and so is dignity, but it seems you are not at all aware of how all this can help you. Frankly speaking try it. If not "new age clap-trap" just be alone at a quite place and closing your eyes and trying to think of nothing. You will feel much relaxed after a busy day.

But if SCO sold them Linux, I don't see how they could sue anyway.
A bit of a contradiction here. If SCO sells them Linux, and it is under GPL, how can they sue anybody becoz they GPL'd their IP. It seems that there is so much confusion in this case that in the end it wont matter who is right or who is wrong, all that will matter that who has better lawyers. I guess IBM is pretty strong on that front.
However this battle will drag real long and in the end the user will be at loss and also its the SCO shareholder who stands to lose. The SCO share has really been jumping quite a bit and it is only a matter of time before the SEC jumps in. Welcome to 2003: The battle of the 'nixes

This is a clear indication that exile activity is increasing. We need to create more agents to counter the exiles. There is a talk of the exile who wants to destry the matrix. Due to the programming anomaly in the exile lots of junk traffic is being generated. The target is the source server at redmond. Under no circumstances should the server be compromised
