OMB gets off an making these grand IT pronouncements! I spent the last few years watching them blow millions of taxpayer dollars on their last bunch of IT crap they pushed down which was poorly planned and even more poorly managed. Hearing them mandate this by 08 is the funniest thing I have ever heard. All the agencies already have their budgets pretty well known through FY07, so where will they get the money? Some agencies like DOI don't even have a fully functional network - parts of it are not allowed to connect to the internet by court order because their security was so bad. So how the hell will that non-functioning entity move to IPv6?

So it is just pure coincidence that he managed to shine it into the cockpit of a plane, and not the 99% of the other surface area of the plane? this is mostly true, although I would say that it misses a few key points. On the plus side, America has had and continues to generally have more overall innovation and access to things that others would not - we subsidize the worldwide pharmacutical market since the bastard pharmas charge us what they don't make in controlled markets overseas. And America still has much more social mobility than exists in Western Europe.

On the flip side, Americans work like dogs, while Europeans almost universally have a better life style - less crime, much longer vacations, and shorter daily hours. Those are pretty important to personal welfare and are not often statistically cited.

But two points for the US - Europe had a free security system provided courtesy of the US taxpayer for the entire last half of the 20th Century. Second, Europeans are about to hit a major population problem. They don't make babies fast enough to meet the replacement rate which means that the welfare state ponzi scheme will have some big problems the next few decades. So the Europe of today was built on a couple of things other than just hard work or a perfect economic system.

yes, because hackers that don't come out of their basements know SO much about elections and election law. How many of those "experts" have ever manned a polling station, or worked as a precinct captain. How many of them have observed ballot counts? How many have been election observers in areas run by party machines like rural southern towns or union precincts in Chicago? Opps - I bet the number approaches zero. I have done all of the above, and I can assure you, paper ballots are about as secure as a fresh IIS install. I certainly don't think that electronic balloting is nearly ready for primetime, but having been on the ground in actual voting situations, paper ballots are even worse.

Dear Sir - as IAAL, let me explain to you how 'real' law works. For example, here is a "three-pronged" test, a common thing found in the legal profession when courts give guidance about how to interpret particular laws and statutes:

'The Lynch court fashioned a three-pronged test to aid in determining whether a particular punishment is unconstitutionally disproportionate to the offense for which it is imposed; the test is not determinative, but is a tool to aid in the court's inquiry. Under the first prong, the court examines the nature of the offense and/or the offender, paying particular attention to the danger each poses to society. Secondly, the court may compare the challenged punishment with punishments prescribed for other, more serious, crimes in the same jurisdiction. Finally, the challenged penalty may be compared with punishments for the same offense in other jurisdictions.'

In short, that is exactly how that portion of the constitution works. That's exactly how laws allowing execution for the crime of rape were overturned. I'm a non-practicing lawyer who slipped through the bar exam 7 years ago and I knew this off the top of my head. I certainly hope you are not currently practicing law anywhere.

umm except for that little part in the Constitution about "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted."

And of course there are the crap federalized laws in drugs and other areas with sentencing guidelines. It's really great how the conservatives saw how well the libs federalized state issues and decided to get in on that action as well. So much for states' rights.

United States General George S. Patton:

"Men, this stuff that some sources sling around about America wanting out of this war, not wanting to fight, is a crock of bullshit. Americans love to fight, traditionally. All real Americans love the sting and clash of battle. You are here today for three reasons. First, because you are here to defend your homes and your loved ones. Second, you are here for your own self respect, because you would not want to be anywhere else. Third, you are here because you are real men and all real men like to fight. When you, here, everyone of you, were kids, you all admired the champion marble player, the fastest runner, the toughest boxer, the big league ball players, and the All-American football players. Americans love a winner. Americans will not tolerate a loser. Americans despise cowards. Americans play to win all of the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost nor will ever lose a war; for the very idea of losing is hateful to an American."

Unfortunately Patton's best advice was not taken - Patton paused, took a deep breath, and continued, "Each man must not think only of himself, but also of his buddy fighting beside him. We don't want yellow cowards in this Army. They should be killed off like rats. If not, they will go home after this war and breed more cowards. The brave men will breed more brave men. Kill off the Goddamned cowards and we will have a nation of brave men." If we could kill off all the damn hippies, we'd have a lot better time of it.
