The one time I tried to do a heelflip in my work clothes, I ended up with a hole in the knee of my slacks and was mighty embarrassed, as well.

  4. Offtopic Warning! on Halo Movie Deal Moves Closer · · Score: 1

"not really. i see it the same as the final fantasy movie. intersting story and state-of-the-art cg."

Have you ever listened to the commentary tracks for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within?

The animation team spends the entire session badmouthing the studio for rewriting the script 20 to 30 times, forcing them to constantly rework the sequences, drop them, add them, pick up dropped ones, etc (case in point, the opening opening sequence was one of the first ones created (Aki floating in her craft), the director/writer decided to drop it, only to come back later and just the very same one they originally disliked). They pretty well lambasted the fact that what had started as a solid, original idea, quickly devolved in to Hollywood tripe that made no damn sense.

At the same time, the producer/writer commentary is praising it as a technical marvel, and barely glosses over the fact that they effed the story up beyond any recognizable comprehension, and only barely attempt to explain how the movie has *anything* in common with the games beyond Cyd and the notion of a planet as a living being...

That's some funny stuff, when taken together. I never though the story was awful, but I can certainly see that they could have made a more concerted effort to have it be compelling and cohesive, rahter than just 'high concept'.

But they'll drive another nail in the coffin...it's cheaper for developers to put out games for one or two hardware configurations rather than trying to optimize for for hundreds of potential configurations. Further, they can easily set a higher price point...most new PC games I get are around 29.99 or 39.99 USD, as opposed to 49.99 for most console games I purchase...

The big hope for PC gaming is open source games and modding...but even that is, as yet, still pretty unproven - outside of CounterStrike, of course.

Previously, I had posted about the troubles I had been having with windows...last night, inexplicably, I couldn't get anything to happen...booted, explorer.exe crashed, tried running an app, explorer.exe crashed, ran a restore, reloaded, it crashed...I'm going to be spending my weekend trying to snag the things I hadn't backed up in a week or so - email, documents, presentations, etc - and then I'm installing OpenBSD.

Windows is a blight on the world of computers, and the sooner we rid ourselves of it, the better...I'd go mac, but I haven't the cash at this exact moment.

My firm belief is that the video game industry, in their small way, is trying to help American kids learn how to spell again...with bold, capitalized letters...and short, succinct words.

See, by seeing this bright and shiny acronym, the kids will be all, "What does it mean, mom?!" And then they will strive to learn what words coalesced to create this one super-word, and so on, and so forth...

Or, it could be that they've run out of words to trademark, and have now moved into the realm of 'alternative phrases'.

  18. Re:Awesome on Spike To Air E3 Critics Awards · · Score: 1

And the reason for this is that more people get (and, as a result, watch) Spike, given that it is included in most basic packages (a holdover from when it was still The Nashville Network), than they do G4...this market saturation directly affects the types of advertisers they are attracting, and the amount of money that the station can demand in return for airing the ads...this then influences how much they can toss at event organizers for the right to broadcast said event...

G4 is screwed when it comes to getting junk like this, partly because they are only included in more costly programming packages, and partly because their target demographic - at least the one they pander to - isn't sufficient enough to attract anything more than game commercials, peppered with the odd beverage commercial...

The game industry, in its quest for legitimacy, is faltering left and right, evidenced by the fact that the left hand (game companies) ignores the right hand (game press), and they both slap the head (game players).

Spike wouldn't be the channel of choice, if that were the case...but it does go a long way towards showing exactly how little regard the gaming industry has for G4 at this point.

If they really wanted to bring in new gamers, and expose the future titles to a broader market, picking a channel that has been in constant flux for over 5 years now, has no flagship programs, and recently lost the only ratings draw they had (wrestling) wouldn't be a wise decision...

My guess is that they decided to go with Spike simply because they pitched a better offer than the other channels that would've been interested - if there even were other channels interested.

I never really liked the Zelda games, they held absolutely no appeal for me. Sometime last year, on a whim, I borrowed The Wind Waker from a friend, and have loved every minute of it...it's got quirk, it's got character, and it plays very smoothly...something my previous dungeon-crawler addiction never really did - Dark Cloud 1&2.

If this is the game we were supposed to have gotten instead of the Wind Waker, what will it take to get something along the accidental lines?
