  1. Re:Viral Marketing on Firefly Movie Using Viral Marketing? · · Score: 1

You must not see many movies, buy many products, or utilize many services, then. Tell me, what is life like 'off of the grid'?

Seriously, how do you propose we escape the 'soulles leeches' that are marketing professionals? Boycotting products isn't going to work, they'll just shift over to another ad agency...I suppose we could petition for the demise of the industry, but in its stead would likely rise a newer, sleeker, more agile, and more full of bitter assholes industry designed to invade your every waking moment. In fact, they're already working on that...commercials that *go with you*. Someone on NPR's On The Media was espousing the virtues of this altogether unholy technology. You watch a show, but leave during the commercials, and magically, the commercials show up in other places where you happen to be...radio, random televisions, etc. I refuse to look up a link for it, given that it is pure evil, but it is being worked on.

Given the choice, I'd rather deal with 'soulless leeches' and 'viral marketing' than whatever it is they've got planned for the future...

I do wish that they made it available to the basic users as well, seeing as how having a Pro account is no longer worth it (no new skins for 3.x, no really decent plugins, etc)...oh well.

Not a bad deal, really...assuming you've got a laptop and a need to get things done while waiting on them to flush your systems and such. Not that I'd expect there to be too many Friends fans around here, but I really liked Chandlers approach to advertising..."Socks. They go on your feet" or "Pants. They're like shorts, but longer." Would it hurt people to be that obvious sometimes?

  9. For shame! on Nerdcore Rap In The Press · · Score: 1

Rap isn't the only refuge of nerds...nor is it the first choice. Punk rock has been home to some of musics more learned individuals for quite some time. Here are some prime examples:

Adam Goren//Atom & His Package - Goren holds a Masters in Education and is certified to teach various sciences; notable songs include '(Lord It's Hard to Be Happy When You're Not) Using the Metric System' and It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Lib
Greg Graffin//Bad Religion - Graffin holds a Masters in Geology and a PhD in Zoology, many find they often need a dictionary to fully grasp the meaning of some of the lyrics penned by Graffin.
Milo Aukerman//The Descendents - Aukerman has a PhD in Biochemistry and is so involved in his day to day job that The Descendents hadn't recorded an album from 1996 to 2004...they still haven't properly toured, owing to Aukerman's schedule.

There are others in the community who hold masters and doctorates, but I've just been slammed at work and need to divert my attention toward getting paid...good for Nerdcore rap finally getting some respect, but don't forget to toss a little to those who've been doing it longer in a different genre.

Orientals are rugs and vases...Asians are a people, but even then you'd be well served to not lump them all together.

And as far as differences in the languages go, and the people who speak them, you could've just summed it up by saying that English is a phonetic language, and that most Eastern languages (both near and far) are tonal in nature...one reason most of America can't really pick up Eastern languages (and why the CIA/FBI/Military is at a need for people) isn't because we can't *learn* the language, it's because of the years and years of spent speaking *only* in phonetics makes it exceedingly difficult for 'Mericans to form the tones and phrasing.

To add some context - as well as dissuade any thoughts that I'm blowing smoke up collective asses, here - I studied Japanese for 5/6 years (exact amount of time, I can't remember, it was Junior High and High School, both), and was advised to drop it because I couldn't seem to get my mouth around forming conversational sentences. Further, my roommate is a practicing Speech Pathologist and often works with children from both tonal and phonetic backgrounds.

I still plan on proving Oga-sensei wrong and get a degree in Nihongo so that I can move over to the Land of the Rising Sun and work as a translator in the publishing industry...maybe I'll look her up when I get there. hehe.

Welcome to the goddamn party, man...I've been through this with my music (punk) and my hobbies (skateboarding and tagging) before, and it's no fun at all.

But see, heres the rub...with all of these things - games, punk, thrashing, etc - we've been there before, and we'll go there again in a few years time. Games garnered favor in the 80s, and then faded into obscurity, only to be resurrected again every now and then (granted, certainly not the multi-billion dollar industry that it is now), only to be banished to toil in the dank basements of the geek elite when the kids lost interest. Punk? Same. Skating? Same. The only two 'underground scenes' that ever went public and haven't looked back since are hip-hop/rap culture and the internet (I would've included rock, but I couldn't con myself into it).

Does it suck to have thousands upon thousands of 'newbies' suckling at the same teet that you and yours had clung to so secretly, delicately for so long? Yeah. Is the end of the world? Probably not. For every Offspring, theres an Against Me!...for every Madden 200X, theres a Katamari Damacy...for every Bam Margera, theres a Rodney Mullen. Daaaananana life goes on.
