    I think a protest of some description is highly appropriate. However, I think an equivalent effect on public opinion could be achieved by a 30 second delay screen before allowing access to the site. Particularly for news organisations (and I put slashdot in this category) it may be too extreme to completely close the site.

    I second that vote ! Could the /. editors explain *why* they don't want to put their money where their mouth is ?

    Naa, "USB gadgets" is not yet another way of writing USB drivers for Linux ... an USB gadget is a peripheral which can be USB slave only, e.g. an iPaq. Linux's "USB gadget" is a framework to build drivers for such beasts.

    Fortunately, the DMCA has no teeth in Austria where these guys seem to live. Note the reference to a Mr Kritsch working for MS Austria and the somewhat awkward choice of words, mediocre grammar and poor spelling.

    People who steal computers don't steal them to use them, they steal them to sell them to other, otherwise completely innocent people.

    People who buy stolen material (be it on eBay) are as culprit as the original thief. Saying otherwise is just bad faith.

    That said, this anti-theft BIOS is one kind of a stupid idea. Must come from marketroids.

    Welcome to the Freedom country (that's how you call it, don't you ?), where NCA are legal only if they are:
    • Limited in time
    • Limited in geographical area
    • Financially backed by the ex-employer
    I believe most EU countries have such a system. That reequilibrates the power between big contracting companies owning all jobs of a kind in a region, and potential employees - esp. in tough times.

    And that really makes NDA's evil. You are out looking for a job and even if the NDA is BS you probably cannot afford to 'win' a lawsuit.

    It's not the NDA, it's the US "justice" system. You can cause anyone a lot of trouble whenever you have tons more money to throw at a frivolous lawsuit. Power to the rich, and nothing else.

    If I'm not mistaken, recent Windows use the 3D acceleration to draw all 2D operations, which means they can accelerate everything. I'd love to see XFree do the same thing. Really, this is more than a nice hack.

    Here we go ! I was wondering how long before the first clueless anti-X cluebie would post its rant. Guys, there have already been tons of arguments on this very subject, and many attempted X replacements (Fresco, GGI, ..), none of which are ready to takeover XFree86 in terms of functionnality/performance, much less number of ported applications/frameworks. Moreover, some bright people are working now on improving X protocol and implementation where it sucks (e.g. Keith on XRender, XRandR, Xft, etc.).

    But go on, just show us what you're up to and code something better. It will be adopted and enhanced if it's really good, the free software community is very good at joining well-thought projects.
