Sadly this is already true. Aren't we all paying a media tax on blank CD's purchased? Even if you don't use the CD's for anything, you're still giving the record industry money for a crime you didn't commit (yet).

  3. IMHO... on Why (Most) Software is so Bad · · Score: 1

.. the real reason why software is so crappy is that technology is improving so fast. Think about it for a second. If tomorrow Intel/AMD/whoever announced that the current processors was as fast as things were going to get, what would happen? Developers would be forced to write code more efficiently. If we're stuck with Pentium IV's forever, well we better squeeze every last ounce of goodness out of each clock cycle. And in the meantime, hunt down bugs that cause problems and/or efficiency issues. As it is right now, programmers don't care much if their code is bloaty and slow. By the time it hits the market, processors will be faster, everyone will have more RAM, and it'll run fine. And for version 2.0, they just add more features and bloat.. since processors will be even faster then. It's like a constant race for all the bells and whistles possible. If we started hitting real limits of speed, memory, storage, then coders would have to be better.

and "protected CD's" become more common, will they be giving up the recording media tax? The original assumption behind it was that blank media would be used to copy copyrighted works, but if the works in question are "protected" from copying, then they no longer have a case for the media tax, correct?

I never understood this "recording media tax." Doesn't it go against the whole "innocent until proven guilty" ?? Seems like I'm paying a fee for damages rendered (i.e. the media tax) up front as I'm buying the CD's. So before I even have a chance to commit the crime, I'm already paying for it? Gotta love a system where might buys right. I hate lobbyists and campaign contributions.

That's great, but how are you compiling X11, and the contributions from the BSD folk? Oh, you're using GCC? And where did that come from? Do you use GCC for compiling your kernel too?

Clearly there are two sides to every argument. If Stallman wants to call it something different than you, why not let him? If he wants to refuse to speak somewhere because of what he perceives as conflicting viewpoints, that's his right. Give the man a break.

Would it bother you if somebody could just take that paper and get an A too? Would that bug you?' So this sense of personal investment does ring true with people."

This analogy makes no sense. Maybe if people were selling burned CD's, then it would ring true, but how am I "getting an A" by listening to a CD with burned music? A better analogy might be: "Would it bother you if somebody could just take that paper and read it and enjoy it too? Would that bug you?" That's the right analogy, and my answer is: No, it would not bug me. My master's thesis is online for all to enjoy.

Actually you might be a little wrong there bucko. Years and years ago, when the earth was new, I was an undergrad at MIT and then-Media-Lab-graduate-student Mann spoke in a class I was taking. At the time, I believe he was trying to recruit people to do heavy-duty graphics work (i.e. when he moves his head side to side, his camera is taking discrete pictures of a room/building/whatever at different angles. He was working on algorithms to put them all together and make them coherent). Anyhow, the point is, I distinctly remember him saying that he got nauseous when he removed his visor. The reason was very simple. He spent all of his waking life (outside of the shower) in a 2D world. His body was so used to it, that living in 3D took some serious getting used to, and he would feel sick. My guess is that this is what happened. Ever feel like your eyes need some adjusting after staring at a 2D object (such as a movie theatre screen) for hours at a time? Now image doing that 24/7 for years and trying to re-adjust to the real world.
