Even though this is highly unlikely (hello? they still have competitors), assuming that they do it through honest methods there is nothing wrong. Only when they start using their monopolistic powers to force something, or an unreasonably fee (in which case new competitors would spring up, assuming google doesnt patent the "search thingy") on their users is there an issue. Honestly,/.'s have to stick the world "monopoly" on everything just because they have heard of microsoft.
You do know what a monopoly is, right? Just because you are in the "everything and more" business doesn't instantly make you a monopoly - look at GE.

Sort of.
First, I don't know what kind of school yours is like, but mine is in the middle of the bible belt in good old North Carolina, and I learned plenty about evolution in just by basic honors biology I class, not to mention that a huge chunk of questions on the final exam were about it (did I mention that my teacher was Christian? thats right - we have heard of evolution down here).
As for the students taking up Chemical Engineering and Bioformatics, you are completely right. I mentioned to a friend that I wanted to be a chemical engineer or more specifically go into the field of biochemical engineering, and he asked what the fuck it was. The problem is that professions like this aren't exactly romanticized by the public like the medical and law fields are (although its getting harder to find people who want to be doctors thanks to, well, lawyers).
The second problem is that CE-type degrees, although not new, are just now being promoted like regular colleges like NC State. Frankly, some of us just arent "perfect" enough to get into places like MIT, but certainly good enough to complete a rigorous college course (not to mention that the snob-factor doesn't exactly appeal to me). If colleges promoted degrees like CE in their hand-out packets as much as they do liberal arts and law degrees, we would probably have more people interested in the field.
The article seems to indicate that the Prescott line of P4's will mainly be used in these laptops. This doesnt make a whole lot of sense, because not only do prescotts perform worse than northwood cores at 3.4ghz, but they are also somewhat hotter, and a northwood core would be much easier to cool in desknote.
Better bust out the good ol NiMH's or else you might find yourself buying thousands of "dinacell" (yes, dinacell) batteries like myself for about $.005 a battery.
Although almost every middle-class kid in school has a cell phone these days, we never did use them as much as Europeans did for things other than talking... things like SMS never caught on in America, and as for passing notes we still generally do that by hand.:P
Who are you to determine whats worthwhile for people? Just because your IQ is higher than 99% of America doesn't mean that what you use the internet for is best for everyone. Is any 13 year old girl really going to keep up with politics anyway, whether the internet is involved or not? Many people prefer reading newspapers or magazines to get their news information, and just use the internet for pr0n. Honestly, who cares what joe blow uses the internet for as long he is contributing something by to society in the form of money? Some people prefer not to get themselves entangled in the world of bullshit intellectualism, and thats their choice.
And by the way, there is no such thing as an unbiased perspective.
Its funny, people tend to forget one incredibly huge component of microsoft office: PowerPoint. OpenOffice's Impress program has ceratainly come a ways, but its still lacks many of Powerpoint's features, and has sort of a cumbersome layout. PowerPoint was really what solidified Microsoft's domination of the office market in the first place, and the OSS clones still have a way to go. While Gnumeric and Abiword have cloned almost all of word and excel's features, there is still nowhere near a full powerpoint clone.
Actually, I know this will come as a horrible shock to high-IQ introvert elitists, but the rest of the world is not out to get you and steal your brains which you so highly value but rarely share with the rest of the world. And seriously though, as a smart person who has friends most "geeks" would look down upon because they are "inferior", I cant stand people who are so obsessed with their own intelligence that they perpetually brag about how the world doesnt understand them blah blah blah. Maybe you are just so jaded that its hard for you to understand the rest of the world?
Interestingly enough, I did a search for "hail to the thief" on mldonkey, and every song on the album popped up. Some good this "protection" technology is doing.

As opposed to getting our garbagemen to design it?

Because we all know that America is the only imperfect democracy in the world ruled by the upper class.

In soviet russia, the spam filters you!
Because if we make the Predator stronger, Ahnold may not be able to defeat it this time around.
Hey, I think FSF is just as sexy as the next fanboy, but he was being just a bit sarcastic.

So youre telling me that slipknot is the pinnacle of fashion? Thats a new one.
Dude, thats not ugly, its just totally vintage '99.

Anybody ever do things like disguise a 4 GHz P4 in an ancient 8086 machine box?
This provides an interesting question to humanity: would an overclocked 4 GHz P4 melt the case or catch on fire first?

But I swear it was to get my patent passed.
Also, Rotten Tomatoes typically has good review ratings compared to the singular critics.
