well they are based on completely different architectures, not to mention the underlying libraries (GTK and Qt), "merging" them (even if the developer teams wanted to) would probably be no less work than creating a new environment from scratch.
and in any case, why should there be only one? (unless they start playing a theme song by Queen on startup, or something)
I think the justice department would immediately step in and cry foul, much as if the person who invented the key demanded that all people who owned and used keys for operating locks pay him a surcharge or discontinue their use.
All things computery and digital seem to be viewed differently from meat-space things. Take the same lock ananlogy, if digital laws were applied to locks, it would be illegal to not only break into other people's houses, but to break into your own house, or to own a set of lock-picks or to distribute information on how to pick locks - all of which is perfectly legal in the real world.
Were there any unlawful transactions in how they made their money?
Ah, but "lawful" and "right" are two very different things.
Come to think of it, the answer to the above question is probably "yes", but that's not the point. RIAA companies used the once high costs of distribution to establish an oligo-/monopoly which they are now exploiting to stifle evolution of these distribution methods. Being perfectly legal, does not make it "right." (I realize that such notions are hard to come by in the real world, but I wasn't the one suggesting that those trading music online be held to these exacting moral standards.)
games aside, you have 3D rendering (a fairly popular hobby) and audio and video encoding as two of the major applications that will eat any amount of processing power you throw at them. oh and let's not forget good old development - there's just no such thing as a compile that finishes too quickly.
as far as actual "need" - we don't need anything except food and shelter.
(oh, and no one ever said that a P4 1.7 was all that much faster than a PIII 700)
hmm, yes you are right they should not put out faster products if somewhat slower ones exist already. I don't think they expect 32x owners to want those, people like me on the other hand (who own a 10x that is on it's last legs) just might want to get it.

too lazy or cheap to work officially with the content provider
or get information from dozens of (often academic) "content providers", with a page or two of info each; updated maybe once or twice a month... yes they would definitely want everyone who uses the information they publish to "work with them officially" - good use of everyone's time.
are all nice and good, but unless you are some sort of retard, you will buy her the biggest fucking rock you can afford and be done with it. face it dude, otherwise, it's couch sleeping time. for a looong time.
i'm sure this is "-ten billion, redundant" but it really can't be emphasized enough
you forgot two categories: those summarizing all the bullshit that's been posted, and those who point out that the summaries are part of the same bullshit
I don't really like NWN either why do so many people insist that punctuation should be used when writing punctuation is for books and medical publications why doesn't everyone recognize that retarded slashdot posters will never use it since all they can do is giggle like little school girls when they hear the word period
there are few games for linux because most everyone runs windows, though quite a few of them only run windows because there are few games for linux, therefore it makes no sense to write games for linux... well I for one agree with that argument - things, especially such things as consumer markets just never change.
I mean, a different OS (with few games for it) becoming more popular, and in the process (not before, not after, but continously and at the same time) getting more games released for it... yeah, that's just outlandish and no such nonsense can ever happen.
yeah, but Linux is 7.3, so it's better than both.
and in any case, why should there be only one? (unless they start playing a theme song by Queen on startup, or something)
hmm... 'emerge kde'
the only issue there was the issue of New Yorker I was reading while it was compiling :)

Most people, and probably you and I as well are, in fact, that stupid. Or at least that's how it appears at the moment.

hmmm... is the way that the money they have was made "right"?
just saying... since there is such a clear demarcation of right and wrong.

these reviewrs are strapped for time as it is, they don't need to wade through thousands of: "Fierst Post!"
is it possible to not have another genetics related story posted? ever? no? well then just mod this as flamebait, I guess...
mutant genes are responsible for everything - it's what genes do.
why keyboard? seems like that would be very advantageous, and possibly the easiest thing to interface directly
and so we should. whatever else, working body parts are "granted" - it's those who are missing them who are screwed, not us who are "gifted"

oh great arbiter of name quality, would you concede to... aw fuck it - Ogg Vorbis is a great name!

that post was still not constructive enough, you should've added something about the relative merits of linux and windows

do your worst ;)
only if you can imagine a Beowulf cluster of them
oh, is the "back" gene this one or this one by any chance?
