I "consume" movies and music to set a mood, to gain insight and knowledge, to expand the mind. I also remix movies and music. So, these "consumables" are there to provide something meaningful (for me). On the other side, I like to install Linux (and other free OS), just to have it. Maybe I play around with it, but generally I just like the fresh and untouched installation. It is like meditation. So, you see, you can have it always the other way around.

I don't understand why people are doing jobs that are per se senseless. It makes no sense to support an OS, which is so crappy (I don't suggest Windows is ;-) it needs a support industry to get it "working". And all just to have a job. Life should offer more than that.

Don't you think that Excel 2007 can do more things than Excel 5.0? It is much bigger, much more bloated, but compared to the times of Excel 5.0, the hardware requirements are actually cheaper - so 2007 is smaller than 5.0 in a way. You may not use the extra functionality in a new version, but some do. Probably only a fraction of the users, but nobody's "hurt", because the current hardware runs the current program just as good as the old hardware ran the previous version. If you don't like bloat and are satisfied with the feature set, why don't you stay with the older version (and older hardware). Or you just need a custom-tailored app for your needs.

If good market demand studies were all it takes to make a good product why are there still flops from companies with big marketing departments?

People often do not recognize products they could use before they see them. They cannot imagine what they could use in the future - otherwise most people would be inventors. Also, market demand can be quite unreasonable. If a marketing department does not contain engineers who actually are very close to the technical field in question AND part of the development team, the marketing/management types do not know what's possible and what's not.

Both sides are important to develop a product, but in the end, the marketing people should keep in mind, that they are NOT able to develop anything and that they are only a kind of service department to engineering. They serve them to sell the product, nothing else. Unfortunately, in most companies, sales and marketing think they are the people keeping the company alive. But in the end, a engineer can develop something and maybe sell it badly, but a sales guy cannot sale anything without someone who developped the thing in the first place.

"Windows NT" was originally a new design for OS/2, which Microsoft codenamed "NT" for "New Technology". When Microsoft dropped out of the OS/2 development effort, they went it on their own under their existing Windows brand, hence "Windows NT".

The moniker "New Technology" was retrofitted onto Windows NT long after the product had been shipped. Originally the code was developped on the Intel i860 CPU, which was called N10 (N-Ten). The "NT" derived from this CPU. Windows 2000 says it is being "build on NT technology", which is utter nonsense, if you look at it as "New Technology technology".

Red Hat made it pretty clear to us, that we have to license every system otherwise we are violating the agreement and they would sue everyone who is doing so.

You have to buy a license for every system and Red Hat is granted the right to inspect your systems to validate proper licensing. Here's an excerpt from the License Agreement for RHAS: 4. REPORTING AND AUDIT. If Customer wishes to increase the number of Installed Servers, then Customer will purchase from Red Hat additional Services for each additional Installed Server. During the term of this Agreement and for one (1) year thereafter, Customer expressly grants to Red Hat the right to audit Customer's facilities and records from time to time in order to verify Customer's compliance with the terms and conditions of this Agreement. Red Hat will do the same audits as Microsoft to validate if you have the proper license. What's the benefit of Open Source in this case. To look at the source? Just looking gets me nowhere.
