"The company sold pills via the Web that promised to increase penis length, bust size and body height"
Wait... the pills increased penis length AND bust size?! Talk about side effects...
Make it open, but patented - and all the circuit diagrams, etc, have to be on the patent. American drug companies make tons of cash (enough to spend more on advertising than research, but I digress) even though their patents expire by around 20 years in most countries - and despite some developing countries illegally manufacturing verisions of their drugs. I don't see why hardware can't be handled in a similar manner.
Also, Bayer still makes money selling Asprin, even though the patent is long gone, the chemical structure is known, the methods of chemical synthesis and manufacture are readily available, and many companies sell generic ASA.
Why? Brand name and advertising. I don't understand it myself, but a lot of people insist on the brand name, even though they're chemically identical.
Yeah, right. Then the MPAA will scream to the US government that "piracy" is destroying their profits and get some more draconian laws put in place plus an extra hefty subsidy (in exchange for a kickback).
The best place I've found in Canada is the C&L Internet Club - they've got a great selection and I've found them to be very reliable and quick with delivery. Their warehouse is in Vancouver, which is open to the public. They also have a sale on until July 1st...
I did a search and that looks like a really sweet machine. Being able to use CF for storing medical programs and stuff would be really helpful for me, as my IIIxe's 8 megs just isn't enough. Do you own one? Any comments?
Yes... it seems that most handhelds seem to be using non-removable internal rechargable batteries. I much prefer AAA...they're easy to find, non-proprietary, and inexpensive. I've mostly used alkaline so far, since I get a couple months out of them, and bought a brick of a dozen or so when I bought my Palm Xiii (and haven't run out of 'em yet). I might try rechargable ones eventually, though - if I can find my AAA charger.
Eloquently put. From the newspapers and TV here, one would think that the health care system is a failure, the American system is wonderful, and that everyone supports going to an American-style system. I figure that the companies that own the media just want a chunk of that GDP.
"How about the term "standard" (seeing as the name of the measurement system is US Standard)? And what's with this "imperial"? What empire are we talking about?"
Why, the American empire of course... "Shrub, I am your father!"
Not to mention that Opera (and perhaps others) default to "identify as IE". You have to alter a setting in the preferences to change this, and all that does is lower your compatibility.
Heh, I remember this one was printed in Analog... April 1994, I think. It was hilarious and looked really professional, but according to the editors response to the (amused) letters a couple months after, neither the magazine nor the makers of the dhmo spoof were responsible. Too bad it hadn't been published in a mag whose readers would've been fooled...
Heh. The Hudson's Bay Company (aka "The Bay") should sue 'em for "diluting their trademark", as they've had the name for hundreds of years before eBay came up with their "arbitrary and fanciful" one.
Anyone remember the SimEarth manual? If I were at home, I'd dig it out. But I remember the series went something like...
Blank Page
Another Blank Page
Yet Another Blank Page
This Page Intentionally Left Blank
Unblank Page - with a bunch of jokes and junk ("Where in SimEarth is Carmen SimDiego?")
I agree. Last year, I chose a IIIxe over a m105. They both had the same amount of memory, and the IIIxe was about $50 cheaper. The only benefit of the m105 that I could see was the revolutionary feature of detachable, personalizable faceplates. Woohoo. The m105 also seemed a LOT more flimsy and had a weird shape and a hole in the cover (for the clock or something).
So much for the folks saying "you get what you pay for".
Hmm... I've had my Palm IIIxe for over a year now and the only problem it's ever given me is that the "up" button is a little flaky (I have to press it hard, rather than just tap it). And I've even had it fall on the ground a few times, though fortunately in the fake-leather case I use. The display works perfectly, as does the digitizer. Still, if I ever get a new one, I'll probably get a Visor Neo, as it is cheap, uses AAA's, and is expandable (8 megs isn't enough for all the medical software I use).
I believe the problem the poster mentioned was that of heat produced/area, rather than just the total heat produced. Same heat/more area(more processors) would be less of a problem.
IANAPhysicist, but I also think the gains in processing ability - as you make tinier and tinier transistors and connections - don't scale with the increase in heat. There's probably some equation relating resistance to diameter that I'm forgetting...
I understand Canada's economy is supposedly doing better than the States, with hundreds of thousands of new jobs daily.
Yes, in the highly productive gambling, alcohol distribution, and topless dancing industries. (j/k)
Seriously though, judging by the contract I just signed, the job market for pharmacists is pretty good...though I hear it's even more so in the states, so I dunno. Programming would probably be a different story than that for other jobs, anyway.
Actually, the body has very good error correction (plus there's some redundancy in the amino acid coding), and if that doesn't work, a defective cell will kill itself - most of the time.
In fact, by killing off friendly bacteria, antibacterial soaps can make you more susceptible to infection.
And I remember when, in microbi lab, we incubated agar plates that had been touched by hands before and after washing. The ones after washing actually had more bacteria (due to the pores being opened up by the hot water), but there were was a greater variety of organisms on the ones before washing...
Actually, it would be quite easy to do this in most towns - a ten minute bike ride, maybe. (It would be harder for me to walk/bike in the city I'm in now rather than my hometown, since the residential and commercial areas are farther apart. The only advantage the city has is a better bus system.) Of course, if it were 100lbs of groceries instead of a bit of milk and stuff, or during a blizzard, or I lived far away from even the smallest town, then it would be a different story. But the poster said most people, not everyone.

Gosh, I sure I hope they don't show anyone punching. Who knows what ideas kids might pick up?

That is just...appalling. I can't express how pissed off I'd be at the car company if that happened to me. Was that also a BMW?

Nah.
What? Prostitutes are free, now? Why didn't anyone tell me this before?
FFIX runs fine with epsxe on a good machine, but FFX will probably take a little while longer to emulate. ;-)

Heck, in 1812 they couldn't even stop their White House from being burnt down...
