Ok, so according to what you write, you are American. AOL (AIM is from them right?) means "America Online". Unfortunately, there's nothing like "KOL" (Korea Online). So all Korean people got spammed by Microsoft. Have you ever been there? there are ads for MSN messenger all about the subway.
In South Korea, there's Microsoft, nothing else. (maybe just in the government where they run Hancom Linux, but I digress). And you're a foo if you don't have an MSN account. So your last sentence is absolutely correct. There are local variations, and that's why the poster of the news was mentioning South Korea.
My wife is Korean and I've been trying for quite some time to setup a nice Mandrake box for her. It's really painful.
First of all, I have to dual-boot since writing Korean and having a Swiss-German environement is unthinkable. So she's booting in a Korean environement with Korean language support, while I have to boot my Swiss German partition. Really really annoying if you ask me. ("Can I reboot the computer, I need to write a note in Korean to one of my friends." -"OK, go ahead, but please reboot after sending that note, I need to work on my files")
On a related note some applications still don't know what UTF8 means. The Korean environment is in UTF8, but you should see all those applications that cannot display other than ASCII+Korean characters.
On a related note, why can't she write an OpenOffice.org document in Korean with German intermixed, without always changing font when changing the language?
Sorry, but I don't get your point. You are going to dual-boot because you've discovered the OSS on Windows and now you are convinced OSS is a great thing. So actually, you are showing a proof that you agree with what I said: OSS on Windows makes the switch from Win to Linux easier.
Maybe you have one reason less to switch, as you say, but you will have one reason less NOT to switch. Think of all the people who say: hu? OpenOffice? I don't know that, I'll stick with MS Word, at least I'm comfortable with it.
So basically their reason not to switch is that they are not familiar with OSS. With this CD, they will be and this kills this reason which keeps them hooked on proprietary software.
Exactly. Download the latest nightly for windows or for linux and you have the stuff. 1.2 is almost ready and it will take another 3 months until they are done with 1.3 (according to the roadmap , this will be around Valentine's Day next year.
When talking of Linux, a lot of people think it is still like DOS. When I tell them to boot the computer and in the meantime inserted Knoppix, they go like "wow! that's Linux?!?!" Usually the boot takes 3 minutes and I guarantee them I don't change anything on their disk. Telling them that they have 8000 USD value software on this disk and show them things like OpenOffice.org, Mozilla, The GIMP, KOffice, the games, they can't utter a sound.
Even me, when I discover a new Knoppix CD, I cannot believe my eyes: every latest version is on it and it's running rock solid.
That just proves it. If there are no new messages why is it downloading 10 of them?
This just proves you've never used Mozilla Mail. I just gave examples of what kind of feedback you get. Of course, if there is no new message on server, it doesn't download anything. And if it has 20 messages to download, it says "downloading message 1 of 20"
...and when you collect mail, you have no idea what's going on.
Ah? Then what does this mean: Contacting host... sending login information... no new messages on server... downloading message 1 of 10?
I've been using Mozilla Mail for 3 years now and I am quite happy with it. Before I was using Netscape mail (4.7) and I was happy too. Last year, I've been working at a company with Outlook. This is the most confusing software I've ever had, especially when you try to configure it. "Adding a mail account" anyone? Go to Options, Properties, blah blah blah? I've had to do it several time, but really every single time I've had to mess around for a while before finding it.
I know (though I admit I haven't ever used it) that OE is much inferior to Outlook. Wow great piece of software this must be!
While I agree that the inconsistency and weird folder management are a real problem, I don't think Mozilla mail is inferior to OE, not to mention the viruses, by the way...
There is a list of Chinese distros [distrowatch.com] here and distrowatch also mentions the major distros [distrowatch.com] that can handle Chinese. These are Mandrake, Red Hat, Debian and Turbo Linux.
Wow! Some are really trying hard to get MSN users to switch to Mozilla/Netscape. Found two communities:
IE to Mozilla
This place is for helping people migrate from the IE browser to the open source Mozilla browser for a much better surfing experience. The web is easy, you just need the right tools. We show you how. http://communities.msn.com/IEtoMozilla/home.htm
Mentioned almost nowhere: if you want to add custom search engines to your sidebar, there's the mycroft project.

Any contributions welcome!
I was fearing this will come sooner or later. I'm just wondering they don't call it "Copyright theft" like the Dallas Morning News Thread from yesterday.
What those companies would like is to controll everything we do, like
"Now YOU watch this, don't turn your head and watch out of the window - no! Watch this (especially if it's a commercial) and listen to closely. You will understand why you want to buy this product, even if you don't need it. And Hey! don't turn off the sound, just watching is not enough. If you don't, we will sue you, because you are a thief, you are violating the copyright."
Big Brother, 1984... Well, for sure, now we are slowly but surely coming to this date...
I already noticed that for a while. German lawyers (especially one) use to sue companies for displaying a link to another site.
And now I read the German government blocks a whole ISP because it didn't like just one page hosted there.
And now a company sues a search engine, because there are links (and a cache) to some information they don't like.
Where do they all think they are????
I'm going to move right away to Germany and I'll sue all companies displaying: "This site is best viewed with Internet Explorer". I bet I'm gonna make a bunch of Euros like this...;-)

I still believe the majority of Linux users choose it because its the best tool for the job, not because Windows is evil and wrong and completely technically inferior (becuase it isn't).
Sort of. When talking of superiority/inferiority of a program compared to another one, you always have subjective criteria. I'm still on Windows and trying to make a choice of what distro I'll take. The arguments Mandrake vs. Suse vs. Debian etc... are just as confusing as Windows vs. Linux.
Since security and privacy are very important to me, Windows XP is a no-no for my home-computer. Other people will say, let's buy a firewall for 100 bucks and we won't have any problems with security any more. Simplicity of use is the most important.
Starcraft? one out of two kids are playing this game daily. And there are even live contests on the game TV channel... :)
