Have the greatest JAVA book I've come across. There's very little of this fumbling around in the dark with concepts as "what's abstraction?" and the like (even though all the high points of the language are hit - almost invisibly - in the text), and instead the book focuses on a more pragmatic approach that I found to be more of an "okay... so you're a SMART chimp... now let's take the language out and drive it around a bit", instead of a tome of terms.
Very good book, that. I still use it to check myself against their code for client/server configuarations (in both JAVA and C) and ensure that I'm writing code that's reasonable.
if China ever does do anything more than little experimental probes then we will inexorably be drawn in to a conflict. China has long been a serious threat to world security, but desperately wants to be seen as a principal power in the world.
Agreed. In IA/IW (Information Assurance/Warfare) circles, we MUST recognize some basic truths:
* These "insignificant probes" (October 24 2002, SoBig & crew, CodeRed/CodeBlue) are an indicator of what's in the hopper.
* Other countries have IW programs fully in the works - I understand we have IA programs (I'm in one of the 6 centers of excellence in the US), but our efforts may turn out be too little, too late.
* Once again, *if* we are not using IW as part of our arsenal, we have to start. Human Intelligence Collectors are a largely defunct (!) group - so, coupled with forward recon (e.g. satelite, etc.) methods, IW would seem to at least even the playing field.
* Who are the world's Big Players in IW? Here we go:
* Middle East
* Russia (potentially, for the right price)
* China
So - in short, we have to at least REact to things like this coming down the pipe - I understand that, in the US, the Sniper was feared and hated in turns (read "One Shot, One Kill"), and we've been told that this is a "bad" way to go about waging warfare... but it's a new Age, and with a new Age comes new ordinance.

October 24 of last year... now this...
I think this is probe #2 of a 2-3 year viability study on Information Warfare.
Just imagine *WHEN* the worms are coded to do lookups on ARIN so that everything in a select region/industry/state/country alone gets nailed.
WE NEED TO WAKE UP. These are probes. And we're on the losing side of 'em.

And there you have it. We need a two-fold revival to take place here: 1) The Internet ought to have a designated TLD (like.security) in which information about exploits can be FREELY exchanged among (verified) network, system, and security professionals. 2) We need to cast aside notions of having to code for the Stockholder, or code for the Board, and instead Code for Longevity & Robustness. Also we need to NOT throw up our hands at attacks (I saw a story on Slashdot about "Intrusion Allowance" or some such, in which a new paradigm of thinking that it's no longer worth defending against attacks was introduced), and instead get serious about connected systems. If they don't meet spec - toss 'em. If they're not B-grade systems (ACL's, file bit permissions... I think 'B-grade' is the DoD terminology here...), we need to toss 'em. If our vendor cannot comply by providing security patches Within A Reasonable Time, toss 'em.
I understand that this will NEVER come about, as it's easier to throw up our collective hands (unless you're a security specialist!;) ), but we ought to, at the very least, be able to exchange information. Here's the deal: the Bad Guys know this. If they don't, they can find out. The Good Guys know some of this. If they don't... they'll find out when they're r00t3d by a 1337 h4XX0r!

Another example:
Mechanic: Geez... this car's about to fall apart. Customer: What's wrong with it? Mechanic: I'm sorry, sir... all I can say is that it's unsafe. Here are the keys. Have a good trip home *snicker*.
Disconcerting, but this is what system/security personnel face now.
Good point. I'd like to RAMDRIVE my whole OS (imagine the speed!) or at least a huge portion of it, like you could with the old Apple OS 7.x systems.;)
And, yeah, the DX would have been faster than the SX - the DX'es had the math co- while the SX chips had no such beast.
Pfft. I had gout at 22. And it sucked. When the medical text says, "excruciating pain", they're not kidding.
Cause? Modified (ultra-low carbs & calories) Atkins. It's my own damn fault for eating 600 calories per day at 3g carbs... but, hey, it was fun while it lasted. And working out for 3 hours a day was good for me.
I then went on to break my tailbone and put on 30# from being bedridden and then unable to walk or run or do things that I'd always done. Meh.
A lot of journals want LaTeX documents. Those that don't can take your output that you cranked through a back-end filter for LaTeX. You can export to PDF, XML, HTML, DOC, and tons of other formats losslessly - it's essentially what PDF was before there was PDF, IIRC.
We need to look at how we diagnose ADD/ADHD. This is currently done via 2 sources: teachers and parents. Sure, Billy's bouncing off the walls... but that's what 7-year old children do when they're bored.
It's unfortunate, but a lot of MD's and PhD's out there have not had psychopharmacology. And it's irresponsible to practice as a psychiatrist without taking at least one course in psychopharm. It is, in fact, downright harmful to patients.:(
On the bright side, it looks like the poster has taken the time to become educated and look into things a bit - this is good, but the frightening part of it is that I'm certain that there are quite a few members in the field of psychiatry who would be baffled and annoyed by a patient doing this much legwork. In Arizona, at least, there is a push to "fill SOMETHING in for 'Axis Diagnosis', ANYTHING", because that's how they bill.
Unfortunate. If you are diagnosed with ADHD and are considering medication, read up on up/down-regulation and other relevent items from head/neck physiology & neurophysiology.
Sure, I'll get modded down, but that's okay, as this is an absolute epidemic and is not limited to just ADHD. If you *absolutely have it*, seek the best treatment plan for yourself, become educated, and UNDERSTAND what it is you're taking. If your current MD/PhD cannot explain things to you that jive with reputable (Tier-I [like JAP or such] or JAMA) sources, dump him or her and see someone else. If they just go ahead and write a prescription with no clinical work-up, dump 'em. If they don't have a straight-backed wooden chair with arms in their office (a great neuro diagnosis tool, believe it or not!), DUMP 'EM.
I have read over your internet site and have reached a very important decision. One that is somewhat monstrous in all its gravity.
You're an utter jackass.
BUT - I'll help you out. Here's what you do to avoid being likened to Bernie (Bernard) Shiffman - you take your website and trash it. Actually, fill it with garbage so that the google cache will take it, then trash it. As in offline. Take your "resume" and trash that. Take a cocktail napkin and write the following on it:
I AM COMPETING WITH MORE QUALIFIED PEOPLE THAN I, DUE TO SCORES OF LARGE CORPORATIONS LAYING CIOs AND KEY PERSONNEL OFF. I WILL WORK FOR JOB SECURITY AND MAYBE $7/HOUR. THANK YOU.
And this will garner you more hits than your current *snort* "style". I'm honestly trying to help you here; it MAY WELL BE that you are an ub3r-1337 h4x0r... but you've shown (me) nothing to differentiate yourself from a common hacker - you can kluge code. So what. Any 6-year-old can do that. Are you a software engineer? Unlikely. But let's take this a step further - let's say that you *are* fluent, versed, and able to perform at the SE level - so who do I choose, as management, to work for me? The ego-driven freak who tells me he wants $120K a year for Software Engineer I... or the guy with 20 years in as a Chief Architect / Head Developer who will take $35K a year for Software Engineer I, has management potential written all over him, and will not jump ship because his family's livelihood is tied up in the company...
Good luck to you. Oh, and another thing... maybe the place to "patent" something would be *drumroll* at the US "patent" office. Though if you have the $370 filing fee, then you're far from broke and can move somewhere to start a career in construction or whatever will pay the bills.
Um. Your local newspaper, maybe?
Here's an example for you: I do routing & switching and network security-type work (I'm now in a program that I saw first on/. - thanks guys!) but am trying to get hired on at Wal-Mart and a local pet store while continuing on with my MS and PhD. Sounds like maybe you're too focused on being uB3r-1337 and trying to foist code onto anyone who will listen to you. Don't. If nothing else, given what you said about your family, maybe you could do some manual labor yourself - you know, use them as contacts. Work is good for the spirit, you know?
It's bloody ANNOYING to have a CTS bout, to speak nothing of having it constantly!
I've just driven cross-country in a large truck while towing a car, and that seems to have done in my right hand - I have the classic "3-finger-and-thumb tingling" going on right now. While I am an avid computer user, this is the first run-in that I've had with this to any great extent, and I'll tell you this - it sucks.
My sympathies to those who live/deal/work with this EVERY DAY continuously. I can hardly sleep now because it's so irritating.:(
Iraq did this in the summer of 2000 - they were using the PS2 (on pre-order, IIRC) and its graphics engine for -surprise!- missile guidance and telemetry.
I'm curious: with advances all the time in Ergonomic Theory, and with the quantum computing on the horizon, it seems that trapdoor (one-way) functions as well as large-prime encryption (RSA) are on their way out.
Do you have any idea what the next wave of crypto will look like? Also, what are your views on the advantages (if any) of analog computing for crypto, due to the continuous rather than discrete nature of the signaling (and, hence, introduced noise becomes MUCH more problematic to an attack)? I'm curious to see what you think, because in 2 years I may well be an architect in some of these things.
... that we took this energy and put it back into writing really small, tight, compact code. It seems to me that we've become too dependent upon slopping software together in this day and age that the artistry, mastery, and elegance of slinging code is long-gone from most code that a consumer will see.
Instead of touting a new 3Ghz CPU with an 800Mhz FSB... why not actually look at it from a pipeline / instruction setup: "oh yeah? Well *my* code can pull off the equivalent of 12 operations per second with *no* pipeline bubbles, AND shadow the RAM" (just like the C-64 was shadowed to get the "128K" later on in the product cycle.
Crap, it's another case of, "born 15-20 years too late". Last week (or was it 2 weeks ago?) started with an idea of mine (that I was coding up to get a patent for) being slashdotted... twice... by someone else... and this week looks no better.

PS: Anyone know of a FREE C or C-like PIC chip programming software? Yeah, OT-away.:|
