I completely agree with you. The most reasonable explanation I've heard so far.

So many times have I read the "meta matrix" explanation here on slashdot, I've lost count. If that's supposed to be a surprise, it ain't surprising anyone. It's the *obvious* answer, and everyone seems to be going for it hook, line and sinker.

Consider this everyone. In the trailer for the 3rd film (you did stay to see the trailer, didn't you? ;-) it appears the major "showdown" ( / action) is going to be the battle to save Zion. For this to be even remotely interesting to watch, the audience has to believe that Zion is worth saving. If it's just another meta matrix, well who gives a sh*t right? Also the obvious problem is that if Zion *is* in a meta matrix, then they must somehow escape this matrix too, right? But how could the W. brothers have any way to make us believe the 3rd one is the "real" one. In short, the whole thing loses all credibility.

I don't believe they would make such a mistake. There must be a better explanation for Neo stopping the squiddies in the Real World (TM), and the parent post looks to have the most half decent explanation I've seen so far.
