  1. KVM vs. Xen on Desperately Seeking Xen · · Score: 0

I am also a VMWare fan and was very happy when they released VMWare server for free a while back. I use VMware Server every day to run a Windows XP machine and Ubuntu Server in a virtual networked environment which I develop client/server apps on. It works awesome.. although I long for faster hardware emulation.

I'm rooting for KVM to take over, however it probally needs some time to settle down. Networking is harder to setup, and I've noticed graphical glitches in winXP.

you have to spend the $$$, or you don't get it the next year. That's probally why the bridge to the airport was created.. 1) it was needed, those 50 people can't take boats to the airport all the time. 2) That money would have been taken away from Alaska budget the next year if they didn't spend it. So blame somthing besides the bridge when you decide to gripe about money spent. Blame your state not having an Oil reserve instead.

way to go. RPMs are dead to me. I actually was thinking CentOS wasn't all that bad, until I tried to uninstall sendmail in favor of a MTA I was compiling from scratch. And guess what? mdadm depends on sendmail.. would you like to uninstall mdadm? UM NO, ACTUALLY I USE THAT. well too bad, CentOS wouldn't uninstall sendmail without taking away my software raid ability. Never understood people complaining about RPM dependancies until now. Just makes me even more happy to use apt.

  8. Re:Study hard at school kids on Google Adjusts Hiring Processes · · Score: 0

Do you think they would hire me for Data Center Tech, having not graduated from college? I just got really bored at college, and now I'm a professional System Administrator cause I enjoy Linux/Programming. I've tried interviewing for the SysAdmin positions at Google, but I get thrown by the low level questions. Unfortunately, I think I've been a System Administrator for too long, and I've forgotten which unix call can list the contents of an Inode and also how many IP's in a /16 network. Without having internet access (not allowed during interview), I'm afraid I won't be able to recite any specific factoids because my brain has already un-learned the stuff I know I can find online. I think i'd be a great fit at google, but unfortunately I'll never make it through the hiring process. Their loss. Actually now I'm considering a career change (after about 8 years of Linux experience in the field). Cause I got stuck in the wrong SysAdmin job and now I'm kinda hating IT in general (never work for a windows shop).

"IT" is broken. Software has too many bugs to list, all causing rampant ID theft and computer crime. Patents are out of control. Air traffic controllers have a less stressful job than "IT". My salary hasn't gone up in the last 8 years. My co-workers all got outsourced. Management thinks they can push their infrastructure (and me) to the brink, cause they don't understand the big picture. Well, it's a job, and it pays the bills. I just duno how much longer I can last at an un-enlightened company. Anyways, I think I'm going to try freelancing again while I get my head on straight. Being self taught from the begining, I may never be able to tolerate 'school'. Blackhat has a certain allure these days, and this will give me some time to sharpen my blackhat skillz. After all, a blackhat never gets asked for his 'resume'.

  9. why pay for support? on Why is OSS Commercial Software So Expensive? · · Score: 0

seems like you could get all the support you need for free, and from the sound of it the free support would be better than what you've already purchased. Don't use QT if it's so expensive, I think that one is more for cross-platform use. Also, use CentOS instead of RedHat if you're looking to save a buck. You'll never use RedHat support and you only need it if you're running Oracle. Anyway, OSS was meant to be community supported, check out the community around the technology you use.. Become a part of that community and help support yourself, after all you've got the code!

Installed linspire for some people, and they were so dumb they didn't realize when CNR expired their license. Anyways, that led to the system being compromised and eventually rendered un-usable. 11. dudes! screw the emulation already! on Windows Games on Macs Without Windows · · Score: 0

Yeah, I too once thought playing games in an emulated wine environment was the future. However, this doesn't seem to be happening too well (it's buggy and slow to release a new game). So, let's just all focus on making dual-booting MUCH MUCH faster. Remember loadlin.exe? we need some binaries to loadwindows uber quickly so we can play our games, then we can loadlin.exe back quickly also. Even hibernating both OSs would be a step. Then once this is completed, we can make plugins that remove-WGA, defeat MS money schemes etc.

The fact that you're only 5 employees and already thinking you need a sysadmin, means that you do need one. I'm sure there's plenty of cheap mediocre talent you could hire, have them there fulltime to do your windows grunt work and answer your questions like a good little google proxy (were talking interns here). Whatever you do, don't get fooled into thinking you can have a SysAdmin that works remotely *all the time. Won't work, and you'll get pissed at the turnaround time. If the intern sucks, just fire them until you find someone smart. They're out there Im pretty sure (and they need $$$). Just hard to find somtimes.
