This table is completely disheartening if you're a programmer. Monster has over 250 cities/areas you can search (on their US site, that is), making an average of 10 or so jobs for the top 3 languages PER AREA. Yuck. Obviously this won't be the case, but that means some areas will have NO jobs listed for a particular area. With a total of 9741 job listings, that makes a total paper average of ~40 jobs per area. I really hope things start looking better than this.

Another thing to consider, of the total 20K jobs across all 3 services, how many of those are dupes? Maybe half? More?

If you want to applaud the efforts of a game development crew, then pick a team like id or Epic. These guys set internal release dates but tell the world that their games will be out "when they're done". They always seem to deliver a game in a timely manner, they always make good on the hype, and they both leave legacies for their products by crafting engines that other games are built upon. How those guys stay focused year after year and still manage to be on top is definitely book material. I would love to see a project management book by John Carmack and Tim Sweeney hit the shelves some day. These guys know how to get it done.

3D Realms, IMO, is living on their legacy created by Duke 3D. Granted they've spent some time helping other games get out the door (Max Payne, Duke titles for consoles, etc.), but I think someone above summed it up best : their outfit comes across more like a rich man's hobby. Were it not for the reputation of 3D Realms, I think you'd see Duke Forever getting the same treatment as Daikatana, Ion Storm and John Romero got a while back. If you think about it, there isn't much difference between the two except that Romero had a track record with a different company. Let's all hope that Duke 4 doesn't come out as flawed as Daikatana.

So now that I've said my piece, yeah, I think it's cool that 3DR can laugh about the progress made on their latest game. But I would prefer that they quit laughing and joking and actually ship something that even halfway meets the hype they've built. At least the hype has died down in the last year or two, giving them a much lower hype-target to hit!

But the catch there is this : fake your connection and you'll only get a part of the content you could have if you were honest about your connection. In other words, sites could meter not only the ad type, but the content type of their site as well. Faking your connection as a 28.8 modem when you're sitting on a T1 would result in you not seeing full media like you would expect. For some people that may be fine, but for others they want to utilize all of their bandwidth, even if that means viewing fuller ads.

Of course, this would all have to be done on a site-by-site basis, but it would be a way for sites to cover high bandwidth costs. Larger, interactive advertisments would cost more, helping to pay for the more media-rich content that would be served to those being honest about their connection. Text ads would cost less, coinciding with the cost of serving text-only or close-to-text-only content.

Obviously this suggestion isn't the be-all/end-all, but perhaps it could be a start.

Cable companies, on the other hand, have to deal with advertizers who are seeing their dollars, potentially, go to waste on PVR users.

This may be discussed below, but I haven't seen it...

Here is what I don't understand. Let's say I tape all of my Monday night shows for 2 hours using my PVR. As far as my satellite company is concerned, I *watched* those shows and all of the accompanying ads. Chalk up another viewer with the other 10 million that watched the same thing. So where's the problem here? Just because my PVR recorded the show for me doesn't change the fact that the show was "watched". Unless the cable and satellite companies are reporting true viewers versus virtual viewers, in which case they're the dolts that are counting the viewship in a bizarre manner. Once the show has been aired, what do they care if I watch the commercials or not?

Another thing I notice is that the cable companies are the ones complaining. I don't see the major networks crying foul : NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox (here in the States, at least). Or are they raising a stink as well and I'm just not reading the right articles?

However you look at it, though, it just boils down to control. These execs are pissed that the public actually has a modicum of control over how and when they view their television, and the lack of their precise control is what they're truly pissed about.

I use Dish. Right now it's pouring down rain and my wife is watching some kind of soap opera. In fact, it's been raining all weekend and I had no problem taping all of my English Premier League games over Saturday and Sunday.

When I signed up, I got a PVR. After a few months, it started whining like the HDD was bad. So they sent out a tech to install a new one, no questions asked. I've got a dish with dual LNBs, 2 receivers and the option for more with just a phone call. I have one set of wires (2 bundled together) that the technician neatly ran down from the roof, under the eave and into my attic where all other wires from around the house come together. You can only see the wires if you go and stand RIGHT UNDER the dish and look up.

The browsable guide is WAY faster than the AT&T Digital Cable we get around here. It's much better on the PVR box than the basic receiver we have in the bedroom, but that's for obvious reasons. Granted I didn't have a huge selection of PVRs, but the one I have does the job, so why do I need to see 15 models on the website just to sate my geek desire for gawking at toys?

Now if you have a problem with trees blocking your dish, then you live in an underground house in the Redwood forests of California. My single-story house has a roof that peaks out at AT LEAST 30 feet, then there's the chimney if that's not high enough. I would be willing to doubt that most people live in a location where they can't get a dish around the trees. Then again, I live in Texas, so trees aren't exactly in abundance.

All in all, it sounds to me like you either had a bad experience or just like to complain. I'd be inclined to go with the former, though. :-)

The problem is that our definition of unlimited and their definition of unlimited tend to be two separate entries in the dictionary. They say that the unlimited internet means you can go wherever you damn well please and not be restricted, trying to pull the crowd that uses internet services like Prodigy and AOL.

We on the other hand think that unlimited means no download limits and no bandwidth caps. Unfortunately that won't ever happen. "Unlimited Internet" is not the same as "unlimited bandwidth" or "unlimited downloads", so a company saying "unlimited Internet" is correct from their FUD-ish marketing point-of-view.

To me, if you want unbridled access, you need to be purchasing an unbridled pipe, such as a T-carrier line. It really aggravates me when people complain that they can't download 50 gigs of data in 10 seconds on a USD$39.99 Internet connection. It's like the people in my office that complain about rush hour traffic every morning yet refuse to take the toll roads that are often less congested. Pony up some cash if you want the luxury of faster access!

We shouldn't expect some kind of uber-bandwidth for a few bucks a month. Probably not a popular opinion with the crowd here, but it's my take on this whole broadband-in-the-home thing. Now if the company tries to pawn off unlimited downloading on the cheap, well that company deserves to be held to their advertisment.

Acquiring all of the requisite hardware for the same price is not an issue, but getting all of the functionality in the same lightweight, small-footprint device is an issue for those the live on airplanes/airports and their ilk.

One additional bonus that this device presents laptop users : most modern laptops have some sort of swapable drive bay that houses the optical drive but will also house a second battery. With this (IMO, relatively inexpensive) drive, you can add a second battery but still retain portability and optical drive connectivity.
