I got tired of having to update drivers and install service packs just to play the new games coming out. Installing updated drivers and service packs is like playing russian roulette with your system. I get the Gamecube and I know any game I buy for it will run right out of the box.

I'm very happy with my Gamecube, sure I can't run the very latest PC games but who cares. It's all about entertainment right? Just like gaming under Linux, just because I can't run Dungeon Siege under Linux, doesn't mean I can't still be entertained by Falcons eye or Frozen Bubble. Just because I can't play (natively at least) Civilization III under Linux doesn't mean I won't enjoy playing FreeCiv.

It's the same with the Gamecube, just because I can't play Quake3 on the GC doesn't mean that Metroid Prime is any less fun and just because my wife can't play The Sims on the GC doesn't mean she doesn't sit for hours playing Animal Crossing and enjoy every minute of it. Heck, she sent me an email asking what Tom Nook is buying Turnips at today.

I don't need a 2gHz processor to write PHP or ASP code, and I certainly don't need an ATI Radion 9700 to lay out graphics in Paint Shop Pro.

I guess the question is: What software do you want to run under Windows that doesn't have a counterpart under Linux?

I too have the "game issue" with Linux, my solution was to dual-boot and buy a Gamecube so I wouldn't have to deal with updating drivers and hardware every six months just to play the latest PC games. I could still play games that wouldn't run under WineX (except for Warcraft II, which REQUIRES Windows 9x...grrrrrrr).

Heck, I've GOT a windows machine that can't run the latest titles worth a damn even though I meet the specifications on the box.

The only apps I really notice missing from the Linux lexicon are the little greeting card/poster/calendar publishing apps like Printmaster and Print Shop that my wife loves to use. I will say this, Gentoo does give the installer a sense of accomplishment. I felt proud once I had rebooted, logged in, and saw fluxbox come up. :)

  20. As much as I like the idea of Gentoo on Advocates Join to Promote Desktop Linux · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm not a big fan of it. I don't think it's even close to a desktop replacement OS.

I like the portage system and the fact that all the apps are compiled optimized for your system. You don't have to worry about dependancies since the scripts take care of it for you.

I don't like the fact that I typed "emerge kde" and 48 hours later , and after seeing numerous "cannot create file due to a permission error" messages fly by, it still hadn't "emerged". Granted it was compiling on an old Celeron-333, but it had 524MB of RAM to do with as it will. That was just for KDE, I had spent 2 days installing and configuing the system just to get fluxbox to come up.

I couldn't even get fluxbox to configure itself for any user other than root, had to go edit all the config files manually and the menu generator didn't work at all.

Compare this to most peoples experiences installing Mandrake, SuSE, and Red Hat (usually about an hour to 2 hours) and I think you can see why Gentoo isn't on the list.

I certainly don't want to run Gentoo down, they're just down I-25 from me. :) But they are hardly a user-friendly desktop distro. They cater unabashedly to the Linux power user.

How often do you upgrade your computers? One of the big selling points of a Mac is it's stability. Yet, they release new products all the time.

I come from a PC world where the next gen of OS and Games usually means I have to upgrade my PC or I can't run these applications. I'd like to switch(tm), but I don't want to spend $3500 for a Powerbook just to find out that it breaks down in a year and parts cost a bundle. I'd rather spend $1200 on an iBook. Look at the 1st half vs 2nd half ratings of any Super Bowl (admitidly the most watched football game of the year) in games where one team is leading by 20 points or more.

The best football games are often low scoring and/or go into overtime.

I've often thought the reason soccer isn't as popular in the U.S. (except when we are children) is because of two things:
    1) We aren't that good at it (yet?)
    2) The camera angles.

When you show the entire pitch, all you see are little dots moving around...rather slowly. When you zoom in on two players fighting for the ball it's as action packed as any NBA basketball game or NFL football game. Unfortunately, most soccer (futball) broadcasts seem to show the wide angle.

On the other hand, there have been much fewer deaths and injuries of spectators at US sporting events than in SOME parts of the world. ;)
