Although to be fair on this one it's not really something Microsoft can patch easily. http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl ?sid=03/0 7/12/1327211&mode=thread&tid=109&tid=126&tid=172&t id=187
The big difference between bugs found in MS products and bugs found in Open Source products seems to be: Bugs in Open Source products seem to make the/. front page the same day a patch is released. MS product bugs are posted about days before a patch comes out.
Of course that could be because the OS projects fix their bugs as soon as they find them rather than having to wait for the red tape to clear up.
yeah because no one ever neglected their child or family because they were at the casino or race track gambling, or working late and weekends.
There have been distractions for as long as there have been people on the planet ("Gronk sure take long time hunting, me wonder if him still love me. Or if him just dead."). The fact that these distractions are there doesn't lessen a persons responsibility.
Legalize Marijuana. Why stop there? The best way to help minorities is to take away the easy cash that comes from being able to sell illegal drugs. Legal drugs are cheaper, safer and very difficult for criminals to take advantage of for huge profit. Oh and did I mention it's good for national security?
But if you make them legal, you take jobs away from all of the poor drug dealers who can't afford a license or storefront. Not to mention stealing jobs from the mules and the kids who just run pick ups and drop offs in elementary school. What about them huh? What about the children?
Plus I'm sure the price would drop since the availability would go up. So now the poor drug dealer that manages to get a license has to sell twice as much just to keep their bling bling fresh. Those gold teeth and rims don't buy themselves you know. So now, by legalizing drugs, you've created an even BIGGER welfare problem because they can't afford an Escalade on what their drug trade brings in.
Well how about some mods that only require 2v2 or 1v1? Rocket Arena, in some modes, is a 1v1 game. Not being able to have spectators spoils the fun.
My understanding is that the Doom3 engine is the basis for Quake4 as well. Quake4 will have more than 4 players. But I can't imagine what kind of machine you'll have to have to calculate "rag doll physics" for 32 players at once, not to mention for the entire world.
My problem, I'm still on dial-up (for the time being) so to install SP4 and get MOST of the security updates in one fell swoop requires a 132MB download over a connection that is, AT BEST, 45 kbps. I usually average a 26.4 connection. Then I have to install their special new patch for this virus.
Yes, better I've done video chat using MSN messenger netphone, CUCme, Netmeeting, and ICUII. Had to configure the router but it worked.
>Gaming?
Yes, both playing and serving. Had a RTCW beta server running on my Linux box with people connecting and playing outside my firewall. Quake servers, Counterstrike Server, even Moonbase Commander once, Age of Mythology beta test, Ultima Online, Anarchy Online. Just about everything.
>Serving?
Yes, I ran my own web server, FTP server, and mail server behind a NATted firewall/router for over a year on a cable modem. The only reason I stopped was because I moved away from the service area.
>Anything other then basic web browsing behind a NAT?
Yes, SSHing, telnet, MUDing, IMing, FTPing, Napster (shhhh) back when it was still up. IM file transfers.
My NAT router/firewall cost $50. One of those rare, expensive hacks I guess.
It's not like port forwarding is a big deal, or expensive, or really screws up the network.
That's right. Who among us, the nerdiest of the nerds, even the coolest of the nerds, hasn't done something dumb to try and impress a girl they are interested in?
As long as there is still FTP, BitTorrent, Kazaa, ICQ file transfer, and email attachments it does no good for companies to prevent something from being downloaded.
I understand that they want to stop the distribution of something that might be confused with a product they sell or that infringes on their copyright or trademark, but it's kind of like trying to shove the toothpaste back in the tube. You'll never quite get it ALL.
Does anyone know of a linux or BSD based distro that will install on an old Palm Pilot? Not the III or V lines, the original lines. I've got one just sitting around. I've already got a replacement for it I just want to play around with it. Does anyone have any links for instructions on installing Linux (or any other OS) on them?
Racing and sports + shooters= Only %10 of the console audience satisfied.
Pure ignorance. These two genres account for a huge percentage of console game sales.
That being said, I'd like to see more RTS type games come to consoles. I enjoy games like StarCraft and Age of Empires, they are one of the reasons I keep a PC around.

and you'll have a point once you are able to run Xbox games natively in Linux.
Right now, the biggest complaint about Linux is "not enough games" (ok, maybe not the biggest, but one of the reasons that a lot of people are dual-booting). Once you can install Linux on your gaming console (PS2 or Xbox) you remove that reason for dual-booting. Now you've got a functioning Linux PC that you can reboot and use to play games with.
What's the difference between that and dual-booting? Well for one thing you only have to maintain one OS installation instead of 2.
I've been slowly waning myself off of using the PC for gaming and getting more games for my Gamecube.
I've never been much of a fanboy, but the Gamecube and Gameboy Advance are turning me into one.
It started with Golden Sun on the GBA, continued with Eternal Darkness when my wife bought me a GC for Christmas, expanded to include her when I brought home Animal Crossing, and I was pretty much converted to a fanboy when I picked up Metroid Prime & Metroid Fusion. Now I'm looking forward to buying Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, MGS 3, Ikagura(sp?), and many more to come in the next few months.
My only concern is the lack of online games. Right now only Phantasy Star I & II are online. I think Nintendo realizes that online gaming is a big thing and they are moving in that direction. But I couldn't name any titles that are coming out with online support. I HOPE Animal Crossing II comes out with online support, that would really make it the "killer app" for the GC.
The only other thing, besides the lack of online gaming, that could make me want to buy an Xbox would be if Doom3 does not come out for the GC. Right now I haven't heard of any plans to realease it on the GC. I'm far enough behind the PC power curve that buying an Xbox to play Doom3 would be much cheaper than buying the hardware upgrades for my PC.
Corporate IM has been around for a while, Microsoft includes it for free i their Exchange server 2000 package. It doesn't seem to be doing too well for them.
But with Quake 3 they were making a multiplayer only game, why not make it pretty as well.
With Doom 3 they are slowing down the action some and using the "cinema level" graphics to more fully immerse the player in the game by creating more of a mood to the level.

GNU II Win was open, they just replaced their front page with an explanation. You can click through after you read it and get to the main site.

riiiight, because software would NEVER make a mistake.
Mplayer
Options for what OS? I encoded movies using MEncoder and played them back using MPlayer and WMP just fine.

I would certainly hope the residents of NM wouldn't have to pay more taxes to MN.
They've got enough problems down there what with the aliens taking all their water and setting the state on fire!

Check out Clive Barker's Undying. It's a First-Person horror game and it's in the bargain bin.

to go suck down all of the FAQs from there. They might not be free in a couple of months.

Oh My GOD, if I hear one more person use the word "orthogonal"...
EVERYONE is using that damn word now to explain something. Buisness people, marketing people, GET OVER IT!!!!
But Hitchcock required a camera where Lovecraft only required a pen where greek and American indians only required their voice.
Do you think "Pyscho" would have been as good if it wasn't a talkie?
