    novell standardizes on gnome only for their novell server/desktop lineup.
    the "classic" suse distro (now opensuse) will still carry both.

    at least, that's the story at the moment.

    my father used a paper calendar until i changed him to a combination of outlook and a nokia communicator 3 years ago. the paper way was great, but the chances of him losing all his data without a means of backup was just too great. the company would have had a real problem when his paper booklet would have gone missing. if he loses the communicator, i'll buy a new one and synchronize with outlook.

    especially B) is very valid. we (well, google) only has a lot of early usenet postings because archive cds were made and sold at that time.

    it's quite funny that someone would write a story without cheching such basic things... the german government doesn't own shares of suse (the list of investors is available on suse's website: http://www.suse.de/en/company/suse/suse/factsheet. html).

    why not think about an old iSeries (AS/400)? They go for 1000$+ on ebay, are relatively modern, the manuals are on the web and they can do email/webserving (i think the more recent ones run linux, too). just be sure to get a risc model(preferably with the os V5Rx or at least V4Rx), and not one of the old grey cisc-"i can't do anything anymore"-models...

    given that the university of tuebingen is scattered all over town and they have a good network between the different sites they could spead the backup thingies all over the town. if something destroys whole tuebingen, the university is gone anyway.

    this has been said before: in germany, (practically) everything already has 16% VAT. this includes computers. the mentioned 16% is probably going on top of the levy.

    by the way, terminal emulation isn't nearly as dead as most of you may think. there are a LOT of businesses that rely on the IBM iSeries (AS/400) which use the 5250 emulation. on these emulations, the scroll lock is mapped to 'help', for example. the importance of the SysRq for those emulations have been discussed in other comments, so i'll leave it to that.

    if you want to try what an AS/400 feels like, download tn5250 from mochasoft.dk and connect to as400.holgerscherer.de (username: hacker, pw: hacker). have fun!

    it was an error of a new version of the accounting system of the telecom company. didn't check if the bbc-article pointet this out, but a lot of posts indicate that it didn't...

    i would prefer the "lost" german episodes to be transferred to dvd. they were available on video for some time now (from guerilla-films.com) and they are hilarious (especially the first episode. it ist in german, even the guys didn't know german ;-).

    actually, you don't vote for half the seats with your first vote and the other half of the parliament with the second. it rather goes like this:

    the second vote (for a political party) decides more or less the overall percentage of seats in the parliament. but if more candidates of a party have won their district than the party (as such by means of the second vote), the party gets extra seats (so called "ueberhangmandate") => you can't say how much seats the parliament will have after the election. it's a rather complicated mess.
