I recently did some upgrades to my PC and set it up to dual boot between XP and Mandrake. I have a Liteon 812 DVD burner now and I kept having problems when burning audio CDs in XP.
I tried both Sonic (came with my drive) and Nero, both at various write speeds. I kept having problems where the CDs would work fine in my PC but were very flakey on any CD player. It's worth noting that I didn't have any problems using the same media with my older Creative CDRW.
So I decided to boot into Mandrake and gave K3b a try. To me, it seemed just as easy to use as Nero and much more intuitive than Sonic. When I used K3b to burn my audio CDs, they worked fine in every CD player I tried.
More recently, I bought some really cheap DVD-Rs from Circuit City. I know it's somewhat my fault for getting crappy media but I didn't want to wait to order them online and couldn't turn down the price (50pk for $8). I tried burning a data DVD in Sonic and Nero but kept getting errors. So I tried K3b again and sure enough, no problems at all.
"And to take that to the conclusion, if ones leader doesnt believe that his ocuntry comes first, I wouldnt want him to be in office"
Fair enough but a leader can take great pride in his/her country without pissing off the rest of the world. That's rather short-sighted. Not to mention the fact that Bush doesn't give a crap what half of the country (democrats) think.
"The point of wireless is to facilitate mobile devices - this isn't one."
Say you have an office in your home with your computer/broadband connection, you can hook up a wireless router much easier than running a line into the family room where your console is.
It's the same reason that Verizon (at least around here) is offering a free wireless router to new DSL customers.
Hopefully, they'll both make better use of it than what we had with the GC and GBA.
Many games just checked for the GBA with it's equivalent game and would unlock a few extras.
FF:CC used it as a controller with multi-player but it seemed really unecessary. It didn't add much to the gameplay imo and I missed the comfort of my GC controller.
Are there any games where it was used well, maybe LOZ:FS?
"Developers cannot rely on the latest graphics and more powerful machines? Correct me if I am wrong, but Half-Life 2, EverQuest 2, Doom 3, Far Cry and a few upcoming games (S.T.A.L.K.E.R. etc) rely almost completely on the latest technology."
You're right, Doom 3 relied entirely on the latest graphics and that's why I'm not all that interested in the upcoming sequel. Compare that to something like Resident Evil 4. It has really good graphics too but also an interesting story line and challenging puzzles/boss battles. It doesn't rely completely on graphics like Doom 3.
So that's my opinion. I may be suckered into buying a game with great graphics once but I won't be anticipating that developer's following releases.
You're leaving out some things, like the benefits provided for the tax paid. Presumably, the person making $100k is going to have a nicer home and nicer things which require more protection from the local law enforcement and fire department. When roads get repaired, they'll probably come before the low paid people living in the crumby parts of town.
Granted, there are other cases where the person making $20k may receive more benefits. All I'm saying is that it's more complicated.
"The 119 people that just got rejected weren't the 119 least ethical applicants. They were the 119 of the (probably) 130 applicants who saw the instructions before they were deleted."
Exactly. If they were really so concerned about rejecting 'unethical' students, maybe Harvard should've keept quiet about this for another week or so to see how many more evil doers they could weed out.
" In this case, tuition will go up because they stop making money on landline sales???"
This is insightful? A university gets its funding from many different sources. If one of those sources gets cut (e.g. they make less money from phone service), then they either have to make it up elsewhere or drop some service they're providing.
I'm not sure exactly what you guys are talking about. When I follow the paypal link from here, it doesn't look any different to me.
I even loaded that link and the real paypal in separate tabs. Then I flipped back and forth and they're exactly the same. Maybe it's different in Linux or something.
As far as seeing the real address in the status bar, well it loads so quick for me that I don't see that either.
"and they are even on cable which doesn't reach as many households as UPN."
For the record, I have cable with the Sci-Fi channel but I don't have any UPN stations.
So for me to watch Enterprise, I have to tune into CBS at midnight on Saturday because that's the only time it's on. I don't know how common that situation is... maybe Time Warner just sucks here.
"An elderly man this morning had just merged onto the freeway at 35 mph (yes, 35 mph... in California) AND THEN immediately decided to move one more lane over in front of a car going around 70 mph."
I've driven in quite a few large cities where that's the attitude of most drivers regardless of age.
"and truck drivers talk less frequently than cell phone users, or that they are more highly trained."
So I assume you've never heard of truck drivers falling asleep because they've been driving too long? I don't buy the argument that the average truck driver is more highly trained.
"someone does note that radio usage is different from phones: it's a back-and-forth thing with lots of pauses, not a continuous conversation."
What about people that sing along and bounce around to their music?
Sure both of these are the rare cases but my point is that there's plenty of things people can do that impair their driving. What we really need are skilled drivers that know both their limits and the limits of their vehicle. I know this guy that will drive down the interstate at 70mph about 5ft behind someone because he apparently thinks his reflexes are fast enough to stop if they do.
My personal thought is that it's possible to drive reasonably safe while carrying on a conversation with another person whether they're in the car with you or on a cell phone but you have to make a more conscience effort to be aware of what's going on around you.
"As much as it sucks, it's "alright" for the *AA to put up a file, wait for someone to download it, then sue them"
I can't say that I've studied the law in great detail here but I always thought the burden of copyright infringement was on the person who was distributing the work without permission.
So in other words, you're saying it really doesn't matter if your gun fails to fire because the fact that you're holding one will scare the guy off?
Either way, I agree with the grandparent post. If someone's so paranoid that their electronics will fail, what about all the other situations where a failure could be life threatening like in aircraft or hospitals?
1) It Weighs More - and that weight has a huge impact because rolling mass is much more difficult to move
2) More Friction - Again, a drop in efficency due to difficult in rolling the wheel
3) More Expensive - No longer a need for "expensive" tire pressure monitoring systems (which probably aren't all that expensive, although they are sometimes troublesome) and you don't have to replace your tires as often, but if the tweels cost 3x as much, there is no saving here
4) Noise - No one likes loud tires.
Did you read a different article than me?
It said:
"And so far, the Tweel is no lighter than the tire and wheel it replaces." and "Almost everything else about the Tweel is undetermined at this early stage of development, including serious matters like cost".
Yes it was quite a funny read. Too bad

To Mike,
As no one seems to have pointed out yet, thanks for redefining an acronym (CSS) to mean something completely different. I love it when people do that.

um, I'm pretty sure they get paid because you view the ads, not because you click on them.

troll??? that was the funniest thing I've read all day. :)
Are you sure that's not just a picture of KITT in the dark? ;)
Getting your story posted to Slashdot...Priceless :)
Unless your story is housed on your own web site.

ok, so I booted into Linux at home to compare for myself. It's definitely noticeable.
When I click the bad link in Firefox, it shifts the text in the location bar down so far that it chops off the p's tail in http.
I tried in Konqueror too. It gives me this error instead:
An error occurred while loading http:/:

:)
As long as their plan isn't something like this.
One of my friends showed me a commercial for this. Two young half naked boys in front of the tv enjoying their game. It was a bit disgusting.

Somehow I doubt my employer will reduce the amount of time I work so that 2.68 microsecond decrease will be in my free time.
:)
If my math is right though, I'll be able to retire about 34,260 microseconds sooner!
4. POTENTIALLY UNWANTED SOFTWARE.
I think PUS is an appropriate acronym.

I don't see how you came up with points 1 and 3.
