"Now, you may disagree with him, but in what way is he clueless about his own position?" --- TT: Okay. Well, how can we have this dialogue?
JV: Well, we're having it right now. I want to try to find out the point you make on why are there no Linux licensed players. There must be a reason -- there has to be a reason. I don't know. ---
CLUELESS!

JV: Well, I can't believe there's not any -- there must be a reason for... Let me find out about that. You bring up an interesting question -- I don't know the answer to that... Well, you're telling me a lot of things I don't know.

JV: There's lots of machines you can play it on.
TT: None under Linux. There's no licensed player under Linux.
Spammers are not very hard to track down. The companies that use their 'services' are even easier to track down. Many if not most are in the US or EU.
I've done it myself a couple of times, and have explained the relevant legal code from spamlaws. I have yet to hear back from either the spammers or the authorities I have explained this to.
I would think if law enforcement would do what it is SUPPOSED to do, spamming would be vastly reduced.
im a decent programmer. not the best, but better than a lot that i run into. no college whatsoever.
i've not had a problem finding and/or keeping jobs, even as the current company i work for outsources more and more. it increases our overall productivity, and our employment has increased more and more as we outsource more. As we are able to handle much larger volumes of work at lower cost, we end up hiring more people both here and in india. its a win-win as far as i can tell, at least in my experience. besides, protectionism isnt going to help anyone in the long run.
Sure, the job market is not what it was during the dot-com bubble. But I dont think its anywhere near as bleak as you make it out to be.
In addition to my 8-5 job, i have more side jobs than I know what to do with, usually another 10hrs worth a week, more if I felt like it. Many side jobs I get that I dont want to do I pass on to my friends. All the side jobs I get are mainly through social networking, not through the want-ads. But the work IS out there, at least in the twin cities area (minneapolis, MN).
You arent going to make 100k like a few years ago, but 50k is certainly attainable.
easy enough to get around, set your http server to use a different port.
I use 8124, and its simple enough to use with DNS, just tell your domain name provider to use http://12.34.56.78:8124 instead of just http://12.34.56.78
i guess that keeps some bots from visiting you, but oh well, and in my case i dont necessarily want them...
why would MS have to comply? Couldnt they just say 'okay, BYE' and not sell in Europe anymore? I know MS sells a lot in europe.... but who would be more injured by such a move, MS or the EU?
or is there some international law that says MS MUST comply?
i write software for many many many banks in Minnesota.
Almost all of them use pgp for anything remotely confidential, and many use md5 checksums to make sure nothing got changed in-transit.
I dont know the prices myself but im pretty sure its not $10k. Even if it is, thats peanuts for most banks, especially for something as critical as that.
Plus, I have software out there that many companies dealing with credit cards use. If you apply for a Target credit card, your application (after it has been scanned) goes through my application. Guess what, coming into and going out of, its encrypted.
Maybe you havent worked with banks lately, I'll agree it was pretty bad maybe 6 years ago, but they have got up to speed quickly and most are more secure than your average large company.
well the first thing I thought of was... (recreational) drugs. think (rec)drugs mess up your mind now, wait till we get electronic computerized drugs...
"many great artworks and musical works were done for free."
and many more were done for profit. Michaelangelo got paid for painting the sistine chapel. Bach, Beethoven, Mozard, Handel, etc pretty much got paid for anything they ever did.
Yes, you can do stuff just for 'love'. But after RTFA I would tend to side more with the author... then again the 'Open Source' thing isnt a religion to me.
its non-technical, but i think it counts for a hack.
When i was in high school there was a particular big dumb jock that would pick on me. It was a catholic high school. So I stole some official letterhead paper from the guidance counselor's office and an official envelope with the school info on it.
I proceeded to type up an expulsion letter on the letterhead paper, saying he had been caught masturbating on campus, and as a good catholic school we could not allow that. I made it sound much more official. Had my friend forge the dean's signature, and that if they (his parents) had any questions about it, feel free to call (phone number included).
Then I mailed it.
he never found out it was me that did that, and he did still pick on me... but i'd say I got even.
National Security brought to you by Aibo.
"a sad inditement "
their spellchecker is much more comprehensive with the later releases than ms word 4...
how did you post your sig without the [mozilla.org] following it?
just curious how much they could be potentially sentanced for?
any chance they would see the inside of a jail cell over this?
or is it just a monetary fine (i.e. slap on the wrist)
people who do this should be banned from technology a-la Kevin Mitnick

if i ever subscribed to such a thing, the first thing i would do is re-encode into a non-DRM format.
if you can hear it, you can rip it. its not hard.
