what you are doing I guess. My list of books at home (which I bought in this order) include:
1) Upgrading and Maintaining PC's 2) Exam Cram Comptia's A+ and Network Essentials book 3) Mastering AutoCad Lt 2000 4) The books that came with Quark Express, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, and Photoshop
Of course i'm just a graphic designer who built his own systems - so i'm not really an "IT" guy but this is what I have.
" If I followed all of these boycotts, I wouldn't be able to turn on my computer"
LoL - If you followed all of the slashdot commandments you would only be able to use custom built pc systems made from biomechanical glow in the dark fish which ran linux - but could not be redhat or suse and must be self-rolled - you would also not be able to use any kind of GUI (KDE or Gnome). you MIGHT get away with PC-Dos but definately not MS-Dos. you would have to use opera as your browser. you would also only be able to connect to the internet via a modem or your own self powered satellite system and no computer would be faster than a pentium 166mmx with 64 MB of ramand a 5gig HD - and you would be required to have a floppy drive regardless if you need one or not.
umm... didn't bnetd say they would allow "client programs" to be used on there servers - if thats the case the only reason they have thee servers is to allow all the cheaters and annoyances to play "unhindered" by blizzard - this would end up causing a lot of newbies to start complaining to blizzard and stop playing the game - if you want to cheat play over a lan or open battlenet - dont make blizzard be liable for 3rd party unlegit hacks.
yeah theres probably a lot of people who are going o talk about using terminals switching to linux or some other BS
the BEST way for your situation would be to get a storage server in-house and have everyone copy there stuff to it.
ie: make a computer with a shitload of storage space and stick it in a closet - connect it to the network and map the drive as "shared" or "backup" with every employee having there own folder - then on a weekend where the employees are out set there windows systems to backup to this drive (in there dessignated folder) every 1st and 3rd saturday (insert day no one comes in)
you could have this implemented within a week if you go about it right.
Its one thing if your cheating on a game that you have played through at home single player or multiplayer BUT its another thing to mess with games where if your playing for awhile are actually WORTH TANGIBLE MONEY
With UO oe EQ if youve built yourself a nice little house and cottage you could sell it on ebay for quite some CASH - now if all kinds of hacks come out for UO or EQ it makes that house and cottage worth dick again
I for one am down for getting PAID for my gaming habits and if you try and fuck that up your stealing from me - IMO
i did feel that his whole "i called the FBI and they did nothing" attittude was a little sketch - but on the 6 years record thing - we do that in the states - but "other" places - like the backass middle east dont have to keep shit if they dont want to - and for a credit card company to have a fraud for only 3grand isnt enough of a dent to make uncle sam take a second look.
this just goes to prove my points on how ALL organized religion is truly the WORST thing for the human spirit - as well as it seems to breed stupidity of extremely high levels.
and religious people please think before speaking:)
no really I am hoping they will be the M$haft of linux - why? yes im a shareholder consumer whore - but I also use there 7.2 distro and theres was the easiest to install - save suse which would have been good but im to lazy to install ANY OS that uses 6 cd's
all college kids need a bottle of KY Jelly as they learn to take and give it in the poop shoot
cheep beer is good along with shrooms and pot and lots of cigarettes and pizza
(i'll probably get modded down for this but oh well)
I just wanted to point out that I for one could never understand the point in being placed in a box and flung around in circles and loops for a given period of time as fun...
then again i dont really understand why i accept being placed in a box for a given period of time and not moving every mon-fri....
sorry kido - anyone who has any type of IT/CS job in the bay area right now barely servived the layoffs going around. so basically your shit out of luck because no one can afford/is looking to hire new people in that industry - if your serious about continuing on the path you have chosen - then my advice would be to move to penn. since they are just starting there "tech boom" and hiring a lot of IT/CS people and maybe in a couple years new york will be hiring once they get there buildings put back together and need to fill them with people. (no offense to 9/11 tender hearts)
a friggin joke. I use 68pin external seagate scsi drive which runs from a adaptec pci card.
my 2 udma100 maxtor na dibm drives run straight from my mb controller.
i have xp installed on my maxtor drive and an exact image of this drive backed up on the external scsi drive for transfering to my second computer which does not have an internal drive. the system boots HELLA faster from the external scsi drive than it does from the udma drives. FACT. PERIOD. have a nice day.
while your at it why not go ahed and make the following laws as well:
LAW 1 - copy protect every cd so that it can only play in cd players and not computers (yeah this leads to step 2)
THEN
LAW 2 - make is so the cd's can only be played with certain brands of cd players (this will cut down on people sharing cd's)
LAW 3 - make is a felony to share cd's among people regardless of reasons
LAW 4 - make cd's illegal
LAW 5 - make any type of music not played in designated areas by designated government workers illegal (once this is done we'll solve music pirating once and for all)
The point is too many laws get in the way and cause more problems. If we just keep things the way they are (minus the DMCA) everyone will be happy. If your record slaes or software sales have fallen, look at what your selling and yourself - don't blame it on some minority.
im going to guess your doing 3d design? since thats the only reasonable conclusion as to why you would need to upgrade the system (short of upgrading hd/s and memory)
the intel 400 with 512mg of memory and a decent (30-60gig) hd is more than adequate to be running any type of business applications (ie: ms word, powerpoint) and even apps like photoshop and illustrator dont need more (unless your busting out some crazy sheeeiiit)
now if your doing 3d design and using tools like lightwave, softimage, 3dmax, etc etc then i would suggest the intel p4s for 1grand - reason being alot of the 3d apps will run better on the intel chip (not that the intel chip is better than the amd) just that the software is "optimized" for intel processors.
also if you build your own systems that 40% you saved will cost you 60% when the machine breaks and there paying you over time to come in on your days off and fix it since you have all kinds of shit you have to take care of on your normal hours. not to mention running from computer store to computer store finding the lowest prices/compatable parts, etc.
in short:
1) dont upgrade just because you want "faster computers" unless you really need them.
2) dont build your own period. its only a good "idea" much like communism is good "ideally"
im surprised that big blue wouldnt sell there hd's to western digital since they used to partner with them before. im not to into the hitachi drives, but then again this is coming from someone with an ibm drive, a seagate drive, and a maxtor drive (yeah i have a maxtor but hay its never failed me)
"If you want to build Flash and you don't want to pay $500, how do you do it (aside from copying somebody else's, which as Bill Gates told us is just bad, bad, bad)?"
1) Download the trial version (which is the full version) and you have 30 days to build your entire site and set up everything before the demo runs out.
2) warez it and then tell everyone it cost you $500
3) copy it from someone because it pisses you off that you cant afford it
4) steal it from a store so you have the retail cd's and manual
after seeing the list at the bottom im putting "free" "gay" "sex" FIRST in my tags and resubmitting to google then i got to make sure all my ads have those words in there also - those are some mighty nice numbers of clicks no wonder porn sites do so well.
for me to consider a new motherboard "innovative" it would have 1 1.1 usb and 1 2.0 usb (you can get hubs to extend them if needed) then it would have 68 and 80 pin scsi controllers on it (1 each) forget ide all together - then 1 firewire port - it would have the latest nvidia chipset or ari chipset card with all the extra connections on the board as well as the dlink 100/1ghz ethernet card onboard. it would also include a creative labs card onboard with all the rca and audio jacks available - then THAT would be the board of the future
Wo - i'm going to agree with a mac user here :)
:)
but your right and my ibm thinkpad 1400i runs redhat just fine

oh come on - don't you want to see "lindows" SPRAY PAINTED all over your city
:)
Lindows......I remember several years ago - oh what was it called.....O thats right
OS2 WARP V4
- it ran "most" windows programs too
but who knows maybe lindows will back there product longer than big blue did theirs
ha ha ha - i love how i get modded down for making fun of slashdot.
" If I followed all of these boycotts, I wouldn't be able to turn on my computer"

about FUCKING time - now i just have to compete with all the people who preordered and somehow get a copy FIRST
Its one thing if your cheating on a game that you have played through at home single player or multiplayer BUT its another thing to mess with games where if your playing for awhile are actually WORTH TANGIBLE MONEY

actually im pretty sure you make more money from the tours than the initial cd recording and sales.

the new version of windows will still find a way to make you HAVE TO restart wheather its a crash or a just BECAUSE it WILL make you reboot.
