The red color of the sky is caused by dust particles in the atmosphere. The red cast on nearby objects is caused by skylight. Photographers are quite familiar with the effects of skylight here on Earth: take a picture in the shadow of a tree or building on a clear blue day, tell your photofinisher not to correct the color, and you'll see what I mean.

Now... the question is, what is the "right" color for these pictures? I'd guess that the engineers and scientists at NASA didn't build any automatic white-balance into Spirit's cameras. They probably set them for Earth daylight (5400&degK) color balance for comparison. If that's the case, then in one sense, these are exactly the right colors.

But color is a shifty thing. Your eyes automatically adjust to the color of the light; flourescent light is very green, incandescent light is very orange, but you seldom notice it. It's likely that if you lived on Mars for any length of time, you would start to perceive direct daylight as white, regardless of its measured color temperature. So the sky might very well look blue...

  6. It's called "skylight" on First High-Res Color Photos from Mars · · Score: 1

It's a terrible indicator of the health of a company or the real strength of our economy. When I'm President, the first thing I'll do is shut down Wall Street. All corporations will become public non-profits, and investments will be treated as loans to be paid back with interest, not perpetual debts that can never be paid off.

In case anyone doesn't know, it wasn't anything about the gameplay that doomed Tribes 2. It was the copyright protection. Not only did it require a CD key to play online, which is fair and understandable, but you had to have the disc to play and the disc was uncopyable. Nikon kept things compatible when moving from manual to auto focus, Canon did not.

Sort of. Nikon hasn't changed their lens mount since 1959, but they have changed the way the lens communicates its aperture to the body. Really old lenses have a little U-shaped flange on top to engage a pin that sticks out of the body. Newer AI lenses have a tab on a ring at the rear of the lens. Still newer lenses (G-series) have no mechanical indexing at all; they work only with modern electronic bodies. So although you can mount a manual lens on a N65, N80, etc., you won't be able to meter correctly with it. AFAIK, only the N90 (discontinued) and F5 are fully compatible with manual lenses.

  12. Whatever camera you choose... on Best 35mm SLR Camera for Beginners? · · Score: 1
You should take this article into consideration when choosing your lens.

Though I love old manual cameras like the Pentax K1000, you would probably be happier with a modern camera that will "grow" with you if you take a serious interest in photography. Nikon's N65 and N75 are great starter cameras around your price range, and the N80 is a great camera for a great price. On the Canon side, the Rebel Ti is nice (it's the cheapest Rebel with a metal lens mount) but the Elan 7 is ridiculously overpriced, especially compared to the N80. (Find an Elan II on eBay instead! I've owned two of those, they rock.)

Check out PN. The critics are harsh at times, but it's still the #1 photo information site on the Web.

Finally, don't fall into the trap I did, of becoming a snob and shooting pro film, B&W, and slides all the time. Buy some good cheap film like Fuji Superia in bulk and shoot the hell out of it. That's the quickest way to improve your skills.

I guess it's a great business model - steal as much money as possible before the customer notices. When they leave you, refuse to hand it back and let them realize the cost of an attorney is more than the value of what they've stolen.

Even governments are catching on to this business model! I recently received a letter from a collection agency in Florida claiming that I owed some small-town court $131 for a traffic violation in 2000. Until October of this year, I hadn't set foot in Florida since 1998. But of course I can't even travel to Florida on $131, much less hire a lawyer to defend myself against this fraud. I'm killing time by making them send me court documents to back up their claim. Who knows, maybe identity theft will be apparent. I can't wait to see the vehicle description and tag number.

Anyway, I'm sure the Bush fundraising campaign making headlines this week is a COMPLETE coincidence...

The rising costs involved in renting or owning a home or vehicle, practicing or receiving medical care, operating a business, or practically anything else you want to do in our society other than shut the fuck up and break your back for The Man, can be traced back to the insurance industry. The government makes insurance a legal requirement in many situations but fails to regulate the industry or clamp down on the rampant litigation that drives the high prices of insurance. If I were President (or even a Governor) I would saw the insurance industry's legs off. The hard part is making voters understand why this is so necessary.
