I doubt Kazaa will just fall over and die so quickly. But whether they do or not, the effects of this precedent is much farther reaching than P2P networks. If someone can be sued outside of the US from inside it, this will affect the entire internet. Hopefully Kazaa (or anyone else) will fight back to turn around the decision to keep the internet the way it is.
As far as a (ad free) replacement for Kazaa goes, though, check out WinMX.
Except for the president of search king and Bill gates are both idiots
Yes, the richest man in the world is an idiot. Because we all know any schlub can write globally accepted software again and again. I'm fine with saying Bill Gates is a jerk, or entirely evil, but he's simply not an idiot. Sorry if this turned out as flamebait, but I just have to correct such a statement.
I agree. Perhaps we're not yet being careful enough. Let's cut funding to schools who want to teach foreign students.
And now that I think of it, there's a pretty good chance, with all this anti-terrorism shit going on, that a few Americans might want to help the terrorists. Maybe we should just make it so that the government needs to do a background check on students before pursuing higher education.
The lack of descriptive tech stuff like that really made me doubt the validity of the project. Then again, I've never seen this site before so I really can't be sure one way or another. But if it is real, I think it's pretty cool.
For someone who has never had to kick a habit, like drugs, drinking, sex, smoking, etc... it's easy to stand there and laugh at those of us who have been there and tell us simply to "stop" or "don't".
I have a very addictive personality. I avoid drugs because I'm relatively certain I couldn't stop. The only games I play on the computer are ones like Freecell, Tetris, etc, for the same reason. I try not to criticize people who become addicted to things, but I think that if I can foresee an addiction than other people should be able to also.
As for some advice, I think that the most effective way to kill an addiction is to stop yourself from being able to do it for a while. Cancel your credit card if you're addicted to EQ. Trust your money with someone else if you're addicted to cigarettes, so they can decide what you're allowed to buy. There is always a way to quit.
The reason emotional jurors get picked more often is probably because the defendant gets to pick the jurors, and the defendant doesn't want to be arrested just because the evidence proves his guilt.
Assuming you're running Windows, I'd just run regedit and search for burstabit. Delete everything that comes up, unless you can find a compelling reason not to.
After doing a report to my stat class on this topic, I feel pretty familiar with the data. If you look at a graph of the percent increase of sales each year, you can see it steadily dropping from about 1998 on, which was before Napster around. So while the author is correct in aserting that sales didn't decrease until after Napster was shut down, he failed to notice that sales slowed to a turn-around starting before Napster was openned. I agree that the author should be honest, since his point is right either way.
Brilliant idea as far as I can tell. Only problem, you need to set a date so that people can actually spread the word. I say we make it in like a year. How about the first Tuesday (when new CDs come out) next December (Christmas season equals big sales). Alright?
Just how fast do these things actually need to be ?
They have to be as fast as possible. At the rate things are going, I wouldn't find it at all surprising to see CD-RWs become the next floppy disks. Portable media needs to be able to write the uber-files of the future that we will need to be moving around for whatever reason (assuming you're not networked).
I disagree. Put all the data on a magnetic disk (any hard drive in an extraneous machine). Next time you buy a hard drive, put all the data on it, since they're getting big enough that no one needs that much space anyway. Keep moving it along with the new hard drives you get, on an extra partition. Voila. No compatibility issues, except for lost standards...
Statistically speaking, there was about a 10% chance of finding that string in the first 100,000,000 digits of pi, assuming pi is effectively random, since there are just under 1,000,000,000 10-digit strings in it. But go on another few trillion places, it's in there somewhere.

Yeah... Good idea to be careful...

Type ñ (at least in windows) by holding the alt key and using the numpad to hit 165, then release alt. is 168, ½ is 171, ¼ is 172, etc.

The main disadvantages include the fact that diamonds are terribly expensive :)
Seriously though, maybe it just hadn't come up in a while and Timothy missed it.

[You can get] digital TV signals via broadband access... But then again you can sorta get that elsewhere too.
Actually, I'm still plenty impressed by a 4.7 GB DVD, considering its bigger than my last hard drive (4 GB).
So you can't read the candidate? That's unjust.
Fear of triscuits!
I think a good idea to remove SPAM is to all get personal websites and do what Roblimo has done (scroll down about half way).

No new money to the industry.

Upon reading that, I was instantly attacked with a thought of the bird from The Lion King singing it in his accent. Spooky...
I think in Soviet Russia, all of us are belong to base. Pretty sure I heard that somewhere...
I think there ought to be a .slashdot to show which pages use slashcode. That way you can tell which sites to avoid :)

2000 sheets of 8-1/2 x 11, 20# laserwriter paper weighs 20 lbs.
First of all, this changes your estimate of weight from 100 tons to 250 tons.
Typical yield of paper: 125 lbs per tree
250 tons (500000 lbs) divided by 125 lbs per tree gives us 4000 trees.
440 trees per acre :)
This, after division, gives us 9 acres of trees destroyed for backing up 1 TB of data. Seem worth it?
