What I did when I first became aware of the problem (yes I'm on a college LAN but we have a class A) is configured Tiny Personal Firewall to only allow UDP/TCP traffic on 137-139 and UDP on 135 (messenger service) to the samba servers and campus netblocks that I might use to access my computer (e.g., resnet, labs, etc), then add a filter rule to deny all other traffic on those ports - works like a charm =)
I should also probably add that on the Linux workstations in our labs (which each have a GIG of RAM, mind you), KDE and its associated apps take forever to load. You click in KDE and that little background-flashing-mozilla-dragon cursor will go on and on for about a good 20 seconds.
I've since switched to GNOME + Galeon, which seems a bit snappier. Plus, the fonts, good God the fonts. KDE never seemed to "remember" its font settings, and kind of had a mind of its own. It has this habit of setting the context menu fonts to a cursive calligraphy font, yet no choice exists for that on the font settings menu!
Plus, GNOME, well, I'm impressed at how far its come. It actually looks polished, and has a dab of professionalism on it -- maybe it's the whole Nautilus project, I dunno.
Yes, that is correct, my digital camera automatically mounts as a disk volume when I connect it, under WinXP. It even pops up a comic balloon thingee with the Make/Model of my camera. No CD required.
RMS needs to keep quiet. If he's so pissed, why doesn't he go work on the HURD kernel and use his own version control system? Let Linus use whatever the fuck he wants to use to develop HIS kernel. I never recall seeing "Linux is a registered trademark of RICHARD M. STALLMAN."
"ZeroLogic." That pretty much describes RMS in a nutshell.
I'm not trolling, but I have to level here: we're pretty much dealing with what is a really smart homeless guy. I mean, the guy lived in his office in MIT's LCS cause he refused to pay rent. To each his own, I say. You make a good point, lest it get modded into oblivion by the army of RMS fanboys that often lay tracks here.
If it was up to RMS, we wouldn't have any currency -- we'd be back to the caveman barter days of "I'll give you this here deer skin in exchange for that buffalo." Et cetera. GNU/McDonalds would be giving away free Big Macs, and along with that, we'd all know what in that 'secret sauce...' (Note: please refrain from responding about "RMS' secret sauce...")
If you spend hours every day editing text, you'll want something more powerful and won't mind spending some time to use it properly. Of course, it would be great if the interface was "intuitive" enough so you wouldn't need to learn it.
Which is why I use TextPad or NEdit or ne (the latter 2 are open source, the first is $pay$ software).
Now wonder how long it will take until you *definitely* won't dare to disable it *any more* !?
Is this why everyone's VCR still blinks 12:00? Well, if you ask me, a secure DRM system is GOOD for these people; should you not have the education is takes to operate a secure computing system, then you sure as hell shouldn't. Let some(thing) else take care of the security for you.
I don't think going into CMOS is that daunting, moron. I do what I want; if I want DRM, I'll use a Palladium MS OS; if not, I'll use a Free OS. To each his own. Obviously this place isn't about independent thinking -- it's one way or the highway.
You know, it's pretty lame when you respond to your own post as AC (located just above this) to simply restate what you said here.
You don't have to comment the same repetitive shit 3 times in a thread.
By the way, get a DRM education - Palladium is able to be disabled quite easily. Why don't you get some education about a subject before you start flaming left and right?
Personally, I'm partial to the system I've seen in US post offices. One central line for all tellers, organised with a tape barrier. Simple, cheap, and efficient, with few (if any) of the drawbacks of the fully automated ones.

Frontpage extensions for Apache on Unix anyone?
They've existed for years.
I would expect nothing less from such an uber-leftist organization that likes to sell my information to third parties.
That is the problem in and of itself. In Windows or MacOS, you'd just plug in your digital camera and be ready to go!
Hmm... it's a network managed workstation so I don't have root access, but thanks for the suggestion.
This is very bad moderation. He is correct.
Erm, nix that, SP1.

but my P4 can open StarOffice in about 14 seconds. Mozilla (without the pre-launching stuff configured) takes 17 seconds to load
MS Word takes 2.1 (two point one) secs to load on my P3/1Ghz, WinXP-SP2; I just timed it with my stopwatch.
So does hitting ctrl-alt-backspace automatically press the "Submit" button in your web browser?
She's getting a Sybian for christmas
Sounds like someone isn't getting the job done...
Don't worry, the "amateur sleuths" from Slashdot are right on top of it! Get your detectives' caps and your magnifying glasses, gentlemen!
Kinda makes you feel like the Hardy Boys, doesn't it?
ROFL, mod parent up.

This judge already displayed his incompetence enough during the Microsoft trial, let's not hear it all over again.
Also, anyone find it ironic that this is in the sidebar?
Take an online tour of Windows XP, the newest version of Microsoft's operating system!
That's just the way things go around here... =)
Hmm... last I remember I had 50 karma when we were actually counting, but that little verbal spout seems to have cost me my +1 bonus...

Hey if they're willing to put up with that shiyat, let 'em!

Yeah, and if you cut in line they'll shoot you.
The point is that Intel is loaded and this was pocket change to them.
Bill Gates uses $150 million as toilet paper on occasion when he's down to that cardboard tube.
Realize you're talking about people that eat "Versace Pockets" for lunch.
