Did it occur to you that perhaps part of the reason that you like Van Gogh may have something to do with the fact that he portrayed a natural phenomenon perfectly? The human brain is capable of seeing things that are right or wrong that you may not be able to consciously notice. The math described may be why you like this art.

It is speculation, that is why you report it to someone who could find out what this person was doing. The police could have monitored the activity for this user instead of arresting him on a questionable charge, that does not change the worth of the actions of the coffee shop owner.

  9. Re:sex-offender on Man Arrested for Wireless Piggybacking · · Score: 1
The first thing I would worry about if I found out someone was using a free Internet service in a public place in a questionable manor would be the content of their browsing. Hiding your activity behind someone else's account would make me curious what the person was doing. If the shop owner was suspicious of the person's activity but did not know how to check the police may have been a reasonable place to start.

This is not a Bogeyman issue, that is a red herring. This person was doing something questionable and the shop owners reported the activity to the police and were most likely justified in this suspicion.

  12. Previewing Music on EMI Launches Advertising-Supported P2P Service · · Score: 2, Interesting

This service seems like an actual answer to the p2p users who defend their actions by saying that they only use p2p to preview music before they buy it. If EMI provides a way to legally listen to songs for a limited number of times for free this could be just what is needed to make this preview system valid and leave the sales model to Apple, they seem to have that market covered.

This situation could actually be every Economist's dream. Anyone who has taken macroeconomics has heard the speech about how economics is at least in part theory since it would be irresponsible to play god with an actual economy. I am sure that there are a number of people just watching and manipulating the economy of SL to see what happens, and maybe write a book about the experience. A potential collapse of the economic model from SL may hurt a few people who thought it was a good idea at the time but it could further our knowledge of economics without causing extreme hardships for real people.

  20. Re:Like Cable TV on Paying Subscriptions for MMOs with In-Game Ads? · · Score: 3, Insightful

This is not how cable TV works. Cable TV is like online games are now. You pay for the cable to provide the connection to the content but the actual content providers still need to make money through their ads. This is like having to deal with ads on HBO.

I have been thinking something similar. I live on the Kansas plains and we typically have dry/still summers, but lately we have been getting strong storms with heavy rain, this has been getting worse every year. This is being blamed on el nino or la nina or whatever the term of the year is, but what if we are mislabeling a larger problem as what we have seen before. There is weather that does not match the pattern we have seen and recorded all over the globe and giant hurricanes are just one more example.
