but computer gaming has been largely deemphasized over the years.

Exactly, how can you claim to be a success with just 8.5 million subscribers on a single game. If $15 a month times 8.5 million users is a success, give me the profits from all of those new consoles any day.

  2. Re:Why gold farming is bad on The Life of the Chinese Gold Farmer · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Gold farming is bad, because it destroys the level playing field that is supposed to exist.

So does having a job or social life. Game designers need to do something to make sure you get out of the house more often.

No, your 4 yr old wants a Wii, a stand alone DVD player, and a media library. Go ask him, i'll wait.

The only thing they can do is watch P2P sites and the like to see if any tunes on those sites were purchased from iTunes and they can identify the user.

It sounds like you just described the camera system that is already in place. The problem with this system, up to this point, was that they couldn't track where the music came from originally, but Apple just slapped a "license plate" on all the music they could. It sounds like this may have been the missing link in the monitoring system.

  14. Formal request on RIAA Attacks Sites Participating in Its Own Campaign · · Score: 1

I am writing you to request that you change your beliefs immediately. Please do not even joke about putting the RIAA and reality television producers in the same room. Every time anyone did anything that was entertaining that was not broadcast on television this new group would sue for potential loss of revenue. The legal system and civilized society would be destroyed over night.

Blizzard can't afford to hire enough people to police this well enough to stop it.

This seems to me to be a simple matter of creating a script to record all transactions that include so much gold and then filter by transactions per user and transactions that do not include a major item. This could not require that many staff members.

  16. Re:Not jumping the gun. on NiGHTS Wii uses Forecast Channel for Game Weather · · Score: 1

I tend to disagree with you on this ruining the effect. The outside world matching what is going on in this alternate reality would make the realism seem more real. I am sure almost everyone has had to turn on the lights when playing a scary game or watching some movie because it is just a little too intense otherwise. This is the same kind of idea if it is storming outside and it is storming on the game the sensory perceptions are all there and should feel all the more real. This may be a gimmick, but it also may be a great new hook.

The whole "force" thing is a red herring; the government isn't really forcing anyone to do anything.

This is where you are mistaken. These parents are "forced" to sign a note and turn it into the school that in essence puts on record that they would risk the safety of their children to place every possible barrier between them and sex.

You are looking at these conversations from too simple of an angle. A conversation that only lasts a few minutes about music is almost guaranteed to give some insight into your views and attitudes towards sex, politics, and religion. Most music will have some lean on one of these topics so if you discuss music for very long you should get some idea where someone stands on at least one of these issues, and if everything they like is free of any discussion of all of these basic aspects of life that says something about them as well.

  25. A few mentions on Slashdot's Games of the Year · · Score: 1

World of Warcraft must be on the list somewhere. This is the game everyone is playing, waiting for new content, and generally has made gamers a mainstream group.

Guild Wars would be a close second because as a free game this is what many gamers would be playing if they were not on WoW.

Finally, I have to say Guitar Hero is worth looking at; this is a party game for everyone, beyond the popularity level that DDR ever should have reached. This is a competitive game that everyone can play without shame or sweat.
