I never said I build for games. I play games, but I build for reliability. In my current system I have a Ultra-160 SCSI RAID-5 with 256MB cache. Not somthing you can do internal with any PowerMac I've seen. Add in two gigs of ECC RDRAM and you start to get the idea. Hell, the cases I use cost 175$, one of which I've had for close to 10 years and its still in perfect shape.
When I build a new computer for myself I tend to spend in the range of 3-5k after everything is said and done. However I build that computer to last at least five years.

Ten Years of BeOS
·
· Score: 1
"If I remember it first needed a special powerpc box and it was highly specialized for video production. Think toaster"
You remember wrong. It ran on just about any PPC (before that it ran on AT&T Hobbit chips, but thats another story). It also supported dual CPUs. At the time there where no low cost multi cpu PPC systems out there so Be made their own. It had zero video production ability. It had some nice audio features (four MIDI ports for one thing), but it used basic PCI video cards and had support for one TV card.
"Then they ported it to the powermacs (brand new ) at the time."
Nope, the PPC version ran on Powermacs from the get go. Granted there was a slight hold up as soem drivers needed to be written. However any of the clone systems based on CHIRP or its prediccesor worked out of the box.
"It would not run on standard intel hardware for another few years."
Once Jobs killed the clones off there was no point in supporting the PPC platform any more.
"When an x86 port was finally available software developer companies noticed no one was buying it (thanks to limited hardware requirements) so they decided it was a dude."
The most interesting software was written in the PPC BeBOX days. Most of it never made it over to the intel side. I recal a very cool audio program called BeatBox that let you hook up 12 mice/touch pads and "scratch" MP3 or CD audio tracks in real time.
"The few software that was written was powerpc based."
You seem to have no idea what you're talking about.
"If BE released it for x86 during its initial release its possible they could have had more users."
Why? You may as well say that if Apple hadn't killed off the PPC systems we'd all be running PPC based BeOS boxes.
"Also by now Windows2k is not too bad with video and graphics. Its still slower then linux and Be but not by much."
Eh? Windows2k us MUCH better at video then BeOS ever was.
"We also have journaling filesystems now, advanced threading, realtime support in the newest linux kernels, and today's hardware is much faster."
True, BeOS runs realy well on a P4.
"People used BE for specialized work and a really really fast system on ancient hardware. That problem is going away now."
"Why play a FPS game, when you can play Paintball?"
The police frown on doing this in an urban environment.
"Why run on a threadmill or pedal on a stationary bicycle, when you can run or bike outside?"
Once again, not everyone has access to the type of space needed for these activities. While playing "dodge bus" on a bike through downtown may be a good workout, it has some nasty side effects.
UFS stands for UNIX file system, which was originally developed from the first versions of UNIX at AT&T. The file system reached its current status in the 4.x BSD distributions. It it currently used in FreeBSD, NetBSD as well as OpenBSD and the Solaris Operating Environment. Linux support is available, but is not standard.
Now, take a deep breath and repeat after me. Not all that is open source is GPL.
Translation: Any P2P without anonymity makes it possible to get called on my actions. I don't wana break the law if there's a chance I could get caught.
If people are going to stop dying they had best stop reproducing as well. There's already too many of you people breathing my air and eating my corn chips.
But with the codes out in the open she could be charged by Joe Bob down at the corner 120$ to be told that the gas cap is loose rather then payign 120$ to the Kia repair place to be told the same thing!
As a renter I have to call BS on your claim that its easier then owning. I flush two grand a month down the drain paying rent. Sure I dont need to deal with maintenance, but the money is gone with nothing tangible in return. If I could scrape the cash together for a down payment on a house I would in an instant.
Your right, because of course men in black suits will go around and break all non BTX systems so they no longer work. And all hardware makers have signed their souls away so there will never again be a non BTX board made. THE END TIME IS NEAR, REPENT ALL YOU SINNERS FOR BTX ROAMS THE LAND!!!
BTX is to ATX what a compaq car is to pickup. One PCI-X slot? Give me a break. What we need is MORE expansion, give me a new motherboard standard that has a riser card for memory and at least as many expansion slots as we have now. That the only way to take advantage of these new 64bit systems. Whats the point of being able to use all that memory when there's no room for it on the logic board?
Ok, I'll bite. Whats the "story" in Everquest? All you do is sit in line waiting for your turn to kill somthing in the hopes that it will drop an item that will help you kill the next thing you wait in line for.
"Uh, don't computer games now have simulated worlds and interactive storytelling? Morrowind anyone?"
While I liked the game (and am currently playing the Bloodmoon expansion). Morrowind was about as interactive as a chose your own adventure book. Sure, you could do things that where outside of the script. But they had no effect.
You could rob all the great houses blind while the guards watched, you could kill entire towns, you could reach the rank of guild master in any of several guilds. But nothing changed. No one reacted diferently to you regardless of what you did (unless you where wanted for murder or something, then you had to pay a small fine. And keep in mind that you realy could kill entire towns without getting a price put on your head). One would hope that in the future there will be Morrowind like games with real interaction rather then scripted events.
PS: My favorite example of this problem in Morrowind is when I would walk into a house vault naked, turn invisible, unlock the vault doors, take anything not nailed down, stagger back out with more stuff then I'll ever be able to sell, and all the guards say is "we're watching you. Scum!". I bust out laughing every time that happens.

You can also get an Atari 2600 for around 10$. Whats your point?
When I build a new computer for myself I tend to spend in the range of 3-5k after everything is said and done. However I build that computer to last at least five years.
I realy miss that. (sniff)

I think the array of ZIP disks I built way back when was geeker.
Dont you remember? Regan got rid of all the humans with brains when they wanted a living wage.
Because its not a GPL'd file system?

So you wold spend around 1000$ to build a router? You do know that you can BUY silent routers for a lot less?

So much for the civil disobedience argument.
If people are going to stop dying they had best stop reproducing as well. There's already too many of you people breathing my air and eating my corn chips.
But the software hack changes the plastic body to a magnesium one, then you just need to paint it black.
Lets see, 2000$ a month in rent, or 1500$ in mortgage (or less, my friend is paying around 500$ for his condo).
But with the codes out in the open she could be charged by Joe Bob down at the corner 120$ to be told that the gas cap is loose rather then payign 120$ to the Kia repair place to be told the same thing!
And here I thought this was about making jewelry out of your old video card.

For us Yanks, that's potato chip bags and candy wrappers.
AT has no advantage over ATX. There is no demand for it. BTX will fade just like NLX, the last "ATX replacment".

Are you kidding? I've never played such a crap game. No plot, poor graphics, and dont even get me started on the controls.
You're forgeting the Java moto. "Write once, run once, mabey twice, three times if your lucky".
