Didn't they say this ten years ago? Seems that every now and then somthing comes along that pulls the idiots from the woodwork. HTML, Netscape, Java, Active-X,.net etc have all been claimed as the end of desktop applications.
If they charge you for Windows and dont give you Windows then they (the vendor) are breaking the law. If they only offer a computer with Windows you, the consumer, are free to take what they offer or shop someplace else.
The vendor offers a prepackaged system. If it comes with somthing you dont want throw it out or dont buy it. It is not economically viable for many vendors to offer a high level of customization. If they offer more then one OS they need to offer support for more then one OS. They need to manage drivers and deal with hardware support etc.
Whats more, if they charge you for Windows and dont give it to you they are breaking the law.
"It's quite similar actually. When you go to McDonald's, do you see any Pepsi products? No. Coke has a deal with McDonald's to sell Coke products, thus locking out Pepsi. Now if you head to Taco Bell, you can't get a Coke, but you can get Pepsi and other Pepsi products like Mtn Dew, Code Red, etc."
Right. And if your at a place that serves only Pepsi you are free to leave and seek out a Coke. Same is true of Microsoft and other OS choices. If enough people say "I wont buy brand X computer because it wont have the OS I want" the brand X vendor will change what they offer. Right now it would in many cases be a mistake to offer anything other then Windows. This is the fault of the market, not Microsoft (not that they aren't doing all they can to keep things as they are). When Linux offers somthing that people want vendors will offer it to people. Right now there is just not much of a reason to use it other then it not being Windows (talking about on the desktop not the servers).
As a registered Be devloper I can say for a fact that people flat out didn't want BeOS. It had dirt poor printer, network and videocard support at the time. An OEM would have to be mad to offer it and the whole thing with BeOS being "free" to dual boot OEMs was a farce. When JLG pulled that I knew the end was near.
Um, how is Microsoft stopping people from using Linux, Solaris, OSX etc? This is like saying Coke locks you out of drinking Pepsi. Just becuase not all vendors offer all choices does NOT mean that there are no other options.
Unless the game is free, there should be no adds. If there are adds in the game and there was no warning on the box I would look into a law suit. I'm 90% sure there are disclosure laws that cover this kind of thing. And of course if there is a warning on the box that the game has adds in it, I wont be buying it.
"1. I'm an adult. My serious computer game playing days should be behind me."
Why? Do you stop having fun once you reach a given age?
"
2. Is there an end to these things? My only saving grace that let me return to a normal eating/sleeping pattern with games of the past is that they freakin' ended at some point. I don't think I ever would've seen the light of day if I played a game that never ended. Especially if it gave me a poor facsimile of social interaction by being able to communicate with real people inside the game."
Ok, if your an obsessive compulsive type you should avoid these games. However many people such as myself are able to spend a few hours a week playing without getting the shakes.
"
3. How in the world could anyone with a job compete with the people that play this 24x7?"
You cant. So what? Does it make the game less fun for you when the no lifers have better gear or can gain levels faster?
"Wait a minute, you're complaining that there isn't anything to do after the game is essentially over?"
A bit off subject, but I reached 60th in under two months of casual play. For many classes the game realy starts at 60th. For casters (and in my case feral druids) there is a major lack of equipment at that point which makes any additinal advancment hard.
Once they start doing roll backs they will keep doing it so long as jerks exist that seek to ruin the game. There is allready little enough to do in the game after you reach the 60th and final level. If they start undoing things at random times there will be even less. Why spend the time (and it takes a lot of it) to get the epic armor sets from Molten Core and such when it may just be taken away from you?
If they roll back I'm gone, there are other things to do with my time.
Fun game while it lasted, now I fear its gone the way of Diablo II. Many servers are allready swamped with duped items. Even if they fix the bugs it would require a roll back to address the economy problems. Such a roll back would cause many players such as myself to pack up and leave (whats the point of spending weeks doing somthing when it will just be undone in the next roll back?).
Ah well, it is just a game after all.
I knew a guy who had an old WANG mainframe. And he realy did try to use the line "want to come back to my place and check out my big WANG" a few times.
"You don't need a DHCP server to configure your IP addresses, or to configure them manually."
How do you download Bonjour without an IP address? This is a chicken or the egg thing. If you dont have it, your need to do the stuff it does to get it.
"You will not do temp work because Slashdot readers are a fickle lot?"
No I wont do temp work because the people you end up working for or with treat you like a disposable peon no matter how good you are at the job. The person who paid the temp agency gets the credit for your work, you're not a real employee and often treated as not a real person. Project running late? Just have the temps work tripple time while you go home at noon!
Whats funny to me is that when Microsoft got sued for much the same reasons the response here was very much against the Redmond Giant. Now thats its another company the attitudes seem to have shifted against the contract workers.
This is also a reason I will never again do temp work. I'd rather fish uneaten burgers out of the Burger King dumpster.

Dont worry, the EMP blast will whipe out all RFID chips in the area when I off myself.
(queue monty python and the life of brian style response vs the romans)
Thats how the free market works.

Sorry, but if I buy a computer that comes with a pirated copy of the OS (from a white box OEM) I will go after them tooth and nail should I find out.
I write software for a living. So long as I expect to get paid for my work it would be very hypocritical of me to support the illegal software trade.

I've been 60th for a few months now and I dont have 14 days of play time clocked yet. Sorry, but reality is in sharp contrast to what your claiming.

I agree, the Cookie Monster tells me to hurt people all the time and he seems like an ok sort for a monster.

Given that most geeks get few enough phone calls to render an answering machine pointless, why do they need a PBX system?

I hear that you can only run the software on non-open hardware platforms! It should require a GPLed CRT and CPU to run!
Have you heard the term "runaway consumerism"? Look into it and get some help.
Here is a good starting point. You can NOT own a PSP by NOT buying one. See how it works?
If anything the pizzia I got last week is now more alive then ever!
