  1. Got my hopes up when this happened to me on Bluetooth Ads Beamed from Billboards · · Score: 5, Funny

I was walking central London today when I got a message saying my mobile's bluetooth had an incoming message and asked if I wanted to accept it. Thinking I had finally found another toother, I quickly accepted thinking I was about to engage in depraved anonymous sex. Alas, 449 days of toothing in London and still no takers. Pretty soon I'm going to just assume bluetooth is a crap technology and just switch to raising the collars on my green polos.

  2. Lose authorized status? on Using Computer Stores to Spread Open Source? · · Score: 0

I worked as a tech at a local computer shop about 2 years ago. There was a constant struggle between the boss and I over if we should give the users OSS options. Eventually it was decided, by my boss, that OSS would hurt us. 1/2 of our business was removing viruses and spyware, install Firefox on pcs and people will be more likely to use FF, which means less likely to acquire viruses and spyware. My boss told me that was his idea, seeing me staring at him, mouth agape, led him to retract saying "joking." The next day he told me he asked people at MS who said if we gave OSS, specifically FF, with our computers that we would lose our "authorized dealership" status. Personally, I thought it was a cock and bull story to shut me up. I started looking for a new job that week.

  3. Other peoples limits my network freedom on Converting Users to Open Source- Why Do You Care? · · Score: 0

Last year the university I attend had a brilliant network, great ping and a thick pipe. But so many students were infected windows computers that the IT dept. here integrated what could by any standards be called a draconian firewall to isolate infected computers. Only five ports are open. I can't play WoW, use FTPs that use passive socket, send files via IM, connect to any IM service that doesn't have an http option. What I have had to do is use my mates pc in the states as a ssh proxy to do anything that isn't web browsing or email. So, I try to convince people to use FF (no activex) or alternate OSes (I tend to not tell many people to use linux for fear that I become their manual) but anyone who is in the market for a new computer I do recommend getting a mac. As one of the few people in my halls that "gets" computers, I get someone asking me weekly at least to look at their spyware/virus bloated systems. I don't have sympathy anymore, and usually say "Adaware then PandaSoft, if the PC still isn't working try a format and reload" Simply, the ignorance and lethargy of others has directly impacted my enjoyment of my own computer.

The world did not stop because of a new month, but if you look at /. you would think that nothing had happened today, minus the mass wanking of a thousand nerds. One or two April Fools day gags are funny, but when all there are is april fools day jokes, it gives /. the feel of an unfunny onion ripoff. Besides if all the content is in jest, no one can be taken in by anything.

  9. Re:Ubuntu on Which Linux for Professional Admins? · · Score: 0

I do love Ubuntu, I'm running it on about half of my computers by now. But I would be reluctant to suggest Ubuntu in this circumstance. I doubt Ubuntu would serve the "management=warm and fuzzy" criteria, in part because of it's age and also because there are better choices for upper level support if you are willing to throw money at it, which most corporations are more keen to do rather than trust that all questions will be answered by the yet untested Ubuntu paid support. Personally, I would probably be inclined to suggest SuSe would give the most warm and fuzzy feeling for the managers, but would suggest it with great hesitence

I disagree, in BJ you would be better served by just reading a book that tells you what to do in any circumstance. For me, being a nerd isn't data processing but situation analysis and reaction catered to that particular scenario.
