You should look into adding the Firefox Stable PPA. It currently has Firefox 7.0.1. With Firefox 8 having just been released, I would say this is pretty up to date, especially for Ubuntu LTS. If you want to get brave, you can even add the Firefox Beta PPA.
In my experience, about 18 months into the LTS cycle, it starts to become a pain using up to date programs. Being able to update a few key apps takes away the temptation to go for the regular (6 month) releases. Other options to stay up to date while only relying on Ubuntu packages include using Ubuntu Backports and Prevu.
I've successfully relied on SmallNetBuilder to purchase equipment for clients on a tight budget before. Some of the consumer stuff can be a diamond in the rough. This page in particular is probably a good starting point for your hardware needs. It sounds like you've got the software part figured out.
I run multiple operating systems, including Linux and Windows. I've seen games (all types; not just FPSs) that have a high wow-factor at first. After playing them for a little while I realize they don't bring anything new to the table.
Often times, it seems as if the game developers just used a new engine for the same old game. But at least they have people like you who fall for those tactics, right?
They were lazy. It can be run under a Limited account in XP. Here's how I did it:
Fire up the freeware app Regmon, and set the filters to ignore the standard things running in the background (windows services, anti-virus software, and firewall software - A good starting point is as follows: csrss.exe;explorer.exe;LSASS.EXE;Regmon.exe;WINLOG ON.EXE). Just look at the list of processes that are filling up the main window for the names to put in the filter. While you're still in that filter dialog, uncheck "Log successes."
Now, fire up the offending application and wait for it to give you an error. Go back to Regmon and look through the last few entries for one that has "FAILED" in the Result column. Open up regedit, find the key that returned the "FAILED" message and assign full permissions for the limited user account, or the Users group.
Sometimes, a program will need more permision for a directory or single file. For that, use Filemon. The process is very similiar to Regmon.
If that all sounds too tedious for you, you might want to try just changing permissions on the application's install folder (For example: C:\Program Files\Intuit) and HKLM key (For example: HKLM\Software\Intuit). (Although I can say for a fact that QuickBooks requires full permission on one or two keys outside of HKLM\Software\Intuit.)
This process works for every program I have tried running under a limited account.
Also, the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition couldn't have been released more than a couple of years ago and it uses the z80 processor. Another recenty released calculator was the TI-89 Titanium, which uses the 68K processor.
I don't see any type of switch taking place. Just how did you come up with the "facts" in your post?
Guess what happens every year in August.. Thousands of students return to school. A majority of them just had the summer off, which provided ample time to work on the next big worm. School starts and the creator has a new semi-anonymous internet connection to start propogation from.
As far as I can tell, the 400SC starts at $299 after a $100 instant rebate, and a $100 mail-in rebate. To customize it to that low of a price, you have to downgrade the processor, RAM, Operating system (Technically, a lot of us would not call it a downgrade given the default choice), and Network switch (No idea why this is included with a computer) from the defaults. Also, keep in mind there is no monitor included.
Anti-establishment psychology also comes into play: for example, you don't see anti-business graffiti on your local coffee shop, you see it at Starbucks. When people want to make a statement about animal cruelty and food, they often picket at McDonald's - not the local Mom & Pop restaurant. Why? Because it's perceived as cool to go after the big business.
People picket Starbucks and McDonald's because it attracts attention. Be sure not to confuse "getting attention" with "getting actual results," however. If you look at the recent Pesticide problems with Coke and Pepsi, you will see that the underlying problem is not the fault of Coca-Cola/PepsiCo. The local water is the actual problem. Groups went after those two companies in order to attract attention. Look at the search results for "coke pesticide" to see how much attention it has gotten.
Coca-Cola and PepsiCo could drop that segment of the market with very little loss in direct profits. However, their image goes down. As a result of the attention, PepsiCo has announced they will use mineral water instead of tap water in all of their fountain drinks.
Problem solved, right? Wrong. The water in India is not getting any cleaner as a result of this attention. All that happened is that the two companies targeted cleaned up their act. Have you heard anything in the news about the dirty water in India that doesn't talk about Coke or Pepsi?
I originally misread the parent post. So this should pretty much support what was said now that I have realized my mistake. In closing, getting more attention than everyone else is perceived as cool by the script kiddies; that is why they target Windows.
I know it took me a while to find the free version of this as the Activision site doesn't mention how to get it for free. Head on over to Splash Damage for the announcement. There are Linux and Windows versions available for download. Both versions have a BitTorrent link available.
Western Digital has adopted a new warranty policy effective October 1, 2002. Western Digital WD
Caviar Special Edition hard drives are covered under warranty for a three-year period. All other Western Digital products will be covered under a standard warranty for a period of one year.
As the parent of your post said, the Special Edition drives have a three year warranty. The full name for the drives is "Caviar Special Edition." It is not all Caviar drives which carry the three year warranty.
On a side note, I have the 80GB Special Edition drive and the performance is amazing.
Tells a running copy of WinVNC to initiate an outgoing connection to a listening viewer running on the specified machine. This is the equivalent of the 'Add New Client' menu option. You can put multiple -connect options on one command line to connect to multiple viewers at once.
From the Xvnc documentation:
Xvnc can now make reverse connections to a listening viewer (normally connections are made the other way round - the viewer connects to the server). This is done with a helper program called vncconnect. Simply run:
vncconnect
host
Assuming the said firewall allows any outgoing connection, this would work almost as well as GoToMyPC. You would just have to set something up to run the command at a certain time (or interval) and have a viewer running. cron for Linux and something else for Windows.
This was taken from the MHS site on SourceForge. There is a script there to help emulate MHS on FHS systems. Yes, that means you can start using the MHS without complicated changes on your part.
Am I the only one who prefers non anti-aliased fonts? I think that anti-aliased fonts look like shit, especially on small point sizes. I like text to look crisp, not blended together. During an eye-exam, the doctor made a comment to me along those lines. So maybe I am alone on this...
The read performance of the Seagate ST380023AS was not as good as we had hoped for. On the other hand write performance was better than we hoped for. In summary one fact is clear, the SATA interface works differently to the IDE interface and when you consider that this is a first generation SATA drive, linked to a motherboard that has the SATA interface located on the PCI bus, limiting it's potential, the overall performance is very good indeed.
The benefits of ultra fast data writing would make this drive ideal for write hungry tasks like video rendering or data backup. The Seagate drive itself is very well made and seems to be very robust. Its quiet operation makes it ideal for inclusion in a system where quietness is of benefit.
Serial ATA is in its infancy. Seagate have produced an excellent hard disk drive at the high quality end of the market place which should be very well received. I for one will be very sorry to have to part with this drive when Seagate ask for it back.
Wow, I was going to post a reply saying just that. I had forgotten exactly where I had seen the idea at. I checked to make sure no one else had said it, and viola! your post. Calvin and Hobbes was a great comic strip.
And so many people die each day. What's the problem with killing one because they cut you off in traffic? What may not seem important to you can be quite important to others.
When I leave a bathroom, I try not to touch the doorknob/handle. If possible, I use a paper towel and then throw it away after the door is open. I know this is not foolproof, but it helps.
Think about the guy in line in front of you scratching his balls before he puts his finger on the reader. One more won't make a difference, right?
That is if you do a 1:1 copy. When I am copying one of my *music* CDs, I see no reason to copy the data track. I bough it for the music, not some lame flash applet. They don't need to wow me with quickly moving graphics; I already bought the CD.

I doubt the cause of this is the games; they haven't gotten any better lately in my opinion.

Does anyone verify that the slashdot article actually represents the real article?
