  2. Tired argument. on Windows Drivers for Mac Rolling Out · · Score: 5, Insightful

I'm getting so tired of this argument and I'm not sure why it's been modded funny. There are plenty of reasons putting windows on your mac is worthwhile. For work purposes you may want have to run some windows only applications which won't work under virtualization. For play you may want to boot up some games that are windows only. In academic settings you can buy one machine and tripple boot it (Windows/OSX/Linux). I know my school a lot of the labs already dual boot windows and linux.

videogames take not muscle control?... let's take quake 4 as an example for comparison... in curling you are pushing a rock down ice trying to land it inside a stationary circle or hit an opposing players stationary rock.. in quake 4 you have to precisely aim at your constantly moving opponent..

let's also consider the mental aspect.. sure in curling you probably set your rocks up in a certain way to maximize points (i dont really know how it's played so i'm semi-guessing here).. in quake 4 you have to control the map.. know where your opponent is... keep him locked down in a certain area... you're doing all of this on the fly as opposed to curling where you can take your time to think about it

It's not that companies sponsoring teams that is new, it's the type of companies. Johnson and Johnson has nothing to do with gaming. The thinking is that a lot of non-gaming related companies are going to start to sponsor gaming teams. For example burger king sponsors teams in Europe. This article is saying that we'll start to see sponsorships like that here in the U.S.

It does sound a little ridiculous for most people. I doubt as if most people even have a home theater big enough for 13.1 surround. However, there's probably no harm in having 13.1 audio on discs as I'm sure there are a few people that have big theaters and would go the extra mile. Hell, I would if I had a theater like that.

It was having it on your primary internet connection that made it so unbearable for netzero, etc...

  18. iPod killer? Unlikely. on Motorola Announces E1060 Phone With iTunes Support · · Score: 5, Interesting

Not quite sure how this would be an ipod killer. It only has 32mb of internal memory and supports up to 512mb of additional memory. I can't really see cellphone/mp3 player combo devices really taking off until they start to have storage capabilities similar to an ipod mini.

That being said, I'm not sure I see downloadable music on your cellphone EVER taking off because once you've got tons of storage (and tons of your music) why would you spend the time (or money) downloading more through your phone. Where I think a device like this could become popular is if service providers offered streaming radio. This seems much more possible now with 3g networks taking off.

  19. Forgive me for being a cynic, but... on Why Does Windows Still Suck? · · Score: 1

... this is a terrible article. This guys argument is basically "I installed Yahoo's DSL software and my computer started to suck." He offers no real investigation of what the problem was. He makes no mention of running a virus scan to confirm that it was virus'. I have been running multiple windows boxes on a cable connection for a few years now and have never had a single box become "DOA" as this guy describes.

Here's a few of my favorite quotes from the article.

I receive upward of 500 emails a day, much of it nasty spam that often comes with weird indecipherable attachments that try, in vain, to infiltrate my machine. My Mac just shrugs them off and keeps working perfectly.
Your Mac does not shrug them off. Your Mac's Email client does. And so does Thunderbird on Windows.

I'm a power user. And I have yet to suffer a single debilitating virus or worm or spyware or malware whatsoever. I'm a power user and I hever never suffered a single debilitating virus or worm either. I'm running... *GASP* Windows.

I think the situation this guy is describing is more the exception and not the rule. I think Windows has made great strides over the past few years (especially in the area of stability). It still has some distance to go in security but then again, no one is suggesting you use Windows for your mission critical applications.

I think the real question of this story should not be "why does windows still suck" but "why the hell would you install yahoo software"

  22. It's not just the lense... on 7 Megapixel Camera Phone · · Score: 1

The problem with the majority of camera phones right now is that they use CMOS sensors which SUCK. The reason they use them is because they are cheaper and consume less power. The Motorola V710 while 1+MP, uses a CMOS sensor and that's why the pictures are terrible. I saw a post on a message board that had a ton of pictures taken with a LG VX-8000 (soon to be released). The phone features a 1.3MP camera with a CCD censor. The pictures are absolutely stunning for a camera phone and will be more than acceptable for a lot of people. I'd post a link to the thread but all the images on it are dead. If I can find more I will post them and I think that most of you will be pleasantly surprised.
