  1. What about the security fixes? on XP Service Pack Does the Impossible · · Score: 2

People seem to be bashing this SP, but don't forget that it will also have a ton of security fixes. What I want to know is if they'll allow you to install just the fixes without the useless hide-and-seek part that has been rightfully bashed.

Huh? Linux is neither a living organism nor a corporation, it cannot be hurt. Consumers on the other hand can be hurt by Microsoft's monopoly. Any conversion to Linux systems brings in more recognition. Any such conversion is a win for consumers because Linux is also a threat to Microsoft's monopoly.

Can we have some evidence as to how harmful weak passwords really are? I know people that would be a lot more trouble if they were forced to remember good passwords (They'd probably end up wrighting it on a piece of paper). I think it's a lot better to make sure that the compromise of the account could not do much damage by restricting priviledges.

Is there a page on Mozilla.org that has all the preferences that can be used (for RC2 not some long-forgotten release)?

  16. Good Job on AbiWord 1.0.1 Released · · Score: 2

It's a pretty nifty program. It did not correctly convert my word documents, but it still is a good word processor. Not everyone needs absolute compatibility with MS .DOC format. This is a great program for those that just want to do some simple word processing and do not want to spend any money for it. And as plus, you can save into many formats and you can use the same interface across different platforms.
Now all that needs to happen for free programs is to shake off that K-Mart feeling/image so that people will at least give them a serious try.

It's not like they can't buy licenses just for the machines they want, it's that if they want to save some money they have to include all the machines. Sure it's a bit bullish of Microsoft, but if they end up saving money fine. What I would have a problem with is if this policy (of buying in bulk) was not applied evenly by Microsoft to all institutions and businesses. Another thing to look at, is whether they'd have to buy licenses for all future machines as well. But again, it's part of the deal. You deal with MS, you do it on its terms. You don't want to deal, you can always go with OSX and apple or Linux.
