    You don't. Just have it activated at an AT&T store like all the other phones they sell.


    You can't. The iPhone must be activated through iTunes.. you cannot do it in the store.

    Kind of like how I had to install XP inside a Parallels VM to use my Nokia smartphone on my Mac?


    The difference is that the Nokia worked out of the box.. the iPhone must be activated through iTunes before you can do anything with it.

    Only for GSM. EVDO uses less power than 1x.

    The only question is whether or not the battery will live up to daily use long enough to last out the contracts people are signing themselves into.


    It won't. David Pogue says that Apple quoted 300-400 recharge cycles. That's about 1 year.

    Besides, TFA also says there are issues with 3G chips, including power consumption AND physical size.


    And somehow those problems only affect the US? When the iPhone releases in Europe later this year it will be 3g.

    Verizon is CDMA, and there are very few CDMA providers in the world. You're basically tied to Verizon.


    Well, there's Sprint and Alltel. Alltel has more rural coverage than any other provider.

    What does this have to do with the same person having 11 faulty consoles? Simply put... the consoles he's getting back are NOT NEW.


    Or maybe he doesn't like the noise his 360 makes and decided to "fix" it by stuffing his tv cabinet full of pillows and closing the door.

    The cube was well designed? Tell that to the users who tried setting a folder or book on top of the thing, only to have it shut down due to overheating.


    Even better was the fact that it wasn't obvious which way to put in CDs... and it would actually let you put in the CD the wrong way, and get the damn thing stuck.

    As for the non-response to the Alpine product, this is the first I've heard, and a casual Google search revealed no confirmation. Do you have a source?


    Actually, right in the Mossberg article:

    And, while the iPhone uses the standard iPod port on the bottom edge, it doesn't recognize all car adapters for playing music, only for charging.


    I believe on engadget they specifically singled out the Alpine deck, but a casual search didn't find anything.

    It's got a standard 3.5mm minijack headphone port and a standard (for iPod) 30-pin dock connector.


    The minijack headphone port is extremely recessed. So you'll need an adapter for most headphones. The software running on the iPhone isn't the same as the software for the iPod and DOESN'T support stuff like the Alpine in-dash iPod controller.

    No. It uses capacitance. You'll need really thin gloves or special gloves with electronics embedded in them.

    Why? When I get a free phone from AT&T and use those very same plans, would you say AT&T is giving away phones?

    They want to have a level of confidence you'll pay your bill. Evil bastards! Why don't they just trust people? We all trust them to give them our Social Security Number, right? No?


    Alltel allows you to do a deposit. Which they'll refund *with interest* after 1 year.

    Then again, Alltel seems to be the only cell carrier that isn't full of complete dicks.

    Why bother? You HAVE to pay for AT&T no matter what. Look at the bottom of the page.. the iPhone won't function without a plan. You could cancel, pay the $175 cancellation fee.. and have a brick that won't even play music.

    Man that's such a great album. I could listen to Plans and Transatlaticism back to back all day. To think, everyone who just bought Soul Meets Body off iTunes is missing out on the best songs on the album.

    Buying just one song off an album is like buying just one crayon.

    Besides, I can honestly say that for nearly every CD I've ever purchased, a different song than the single was the song I liked the most. Singles are designed to catch your ear.. the problem is the start to grate and grate upon repeated listening.

    It's usually the more subtle songs on the album that just get better and better with age. And you're missing out by only buying the single.

    There has been some effort to get KDE to adopt WebKit.


    That would be a step backwards.. KHTML is more compliant than webkit in both javascript and css3.

    What is this nonsense? Why would Youtube deliberately use an inferior video codec for EVERYBODY not using an iPhone?


    Because Flash 6 has 98.7% penetration. Quicktime has 67.6%.

    So youtube would be cutting out a good chunk of their audience by going with H.264. Not to mention the hardware requirements for decoding H.264 are obscene.
