    OpenMP, MPI, and all are pretty much only useful if you are programming for a multi-computer (not multi-core, or multi-proc) environment - e.g. supercomputer.

    Actually, OpenMP is only for use with shared memory (multi-core/multi-proc) computers.

    "But what sets Linux apart is the fact that it's an immensely successful kernel." I have always thought that what made Linux a successful kernel is that it was licensed under the GNU GPL. If Linus had chosen a different license I don't think nearly as many people would have been interested in it and it never would have taken off. This is why many people switched from *BSD to Linux, to work on a OS with a kernel that guaranteed their Freedom.

    Freedom 0 is: The freedom to run the program, for any purpose. So while you can't restrict others, they shouldn't be able to restrict your ability to run the (modified) program in return.

    On modern X-Ray equipment, virtually everything shows up in an X-Ray, yes even a plastic weapon would. But you would want to use lead for the best result should anyone be planning this ;)

    It doesn't matter, users always click "OK". They don't want something not to work so it has become a reflex, and they sure aren't going to actually read whats in the message box.

    Hey I think the NT kernel is okay, but it isn't exactly modular, you must take the whole OS or nothing. What if you don't want a gui or windows messanger?

    I like the interface but does kpdf seem VERY slow at rendering to anyone else? I notice it mostly when I zoom in and out.

    How come it start Konqueror first then loads it into my browser? Do you know how to fix it? Some apps work but Thunderbird does this everytime.

    One nice thing about KDE is that you can customize the Menu however you like, also you can turn off the AppName (WhatItReallyIs) and show only one or the other. That said, I am not crazy about the default setup either.

    Most of GE Healthcare's latest generation X-Ray and Surgical navagation equipment run on GNU/Linux. Sure they could have just written the software for Windows and included this price in the cost of the machine, but I hate to see the doctors face when the system has a BSOD in the middle of an operation. :)

    Try being a diabetic, with an insulin pump, flying on El-Al to Israel (or back for that matter) for the UK when you aren't Jewish.

    I spent around 2 hours answering questions, they tossed everything in my bag on a table to look at in detail, looking behind the tray in the Jewel cases, and opening all my medicine. Then they still refused to ship my Checked bags because they claimed they didn't have enough time, even though I checked in 4 hours ahead of time. All of this with a USA Passport, blond hair, blue eyes... I can only imagine trying to do it if I was Muslim or from Middle Eastern descent.

    The problem is that you need to log out in order to switch to Administrator if you need it (Win2K). Does Microsoft have a "su" command in case I want to install software. Fast user switching in WinXP is crap too, and it does not save the old state properly. Say if I am logged into a secure website, when I switch back I will need to relogin. Plus it is very slow to switch.

    The advantage to me as a consumer is that I don't have to give my CC# to a complete stranger. The burden of proof is on the vendor but it is still a hassle to get everything fixed if your card number is stolen.

    DSL uses the phone line, so it would be a RJ11, how is a RJ45 connector labeled DSL different from the ethernet connection?
