Eeek everyone who buys HD-DVD or Blue Ray is an idiot, sorry to say that, but beneath the shiny HD content, there is an awful layer of DRM which is even as evil as that the content providers can disable your shiny device via a key on the disk if your HDCP key was stolen or was/is in one of the stolen keys lists!
DVD was not copyable either until CSS was cracked, but this thing is inherently evil, it basically scrambles all the signals up to the tv, the lifetime of your device can be nullified by the content providers, you wont get full resolution unless you adhere all the so called security standards, still region codes in that dreck, and a lot of other nasty things. Also expect a price hike once the format has killed off dvd, since there is no copying anymore, hence the cheap "vendor" next door is closed. (It always was a myth that piracy raises prices in fact usually prices are raised where there is a monopoly situation)

The msx definitely was not a console, and never was marketed as such, it was marketed as home computer in europe and japan (yes we had msx over here in europe too). It never could take off it was way too late to the table.
It was not really better than the C64 which already dominated the market at that time.
There were a handful of homecomputers which could take modules btw. the most prominent probably would be the pre ST atari computers, msx being another one, and I can remember some of the german Schneider CPC also took them.
Nice astroturfing, there were three firmware updates but only one caused problems for the homebrewers, the first one, and that one was about more than a year ago...
Nintendo is pretty homebrew friendly, as long as their sales are ok, they do not care too much. And it pays off as it seems...
Sony has done a load of stupid things lately, but suing Lik Sang out of business is even worse to their reputation than the entire Rootkit fiasco. The rootkit Fiasco only bothered the hardcore PC crowd, most of their core audience either was not affected or simply did not know what a rootkit is.
This fiasco while not gaining publicity in the general audience pissed of their best customer base, the people who will buy the ps3 the hardcore gamers, all those who carry the public opinion about the playstation, which to a big degree carries the fate of the entire company.
Lik Sang was nothing more than a small leech in Sonys eyes, but killing off this leech could cause a big problem for Sony in the long run because this leech was beloved by many people who indirectly carry the fate of the entire company.
This thing, while not directly feelable by Sony financially, probably is worse than the Rootkit and the last E3 combined, for Sony.
Depends... a pure capitalistic system is determined to doom, the end of capitalism usually is fascism due to a single monopoly or an oligarchic monopoly of konglomerates having enough wealth to dominate over the government (a system as close to stalinistic communism as you can get
because those systems althoug coming from different roots always are the same in the end)
Hence deregulation and splitting of monopolistic companies is a must of every capitalistic society to survive in the long term.
The problem we have currently on a worldwide scale is that sometimes in the 80s and 90s and even now the deregulation mechanisms have heavily failed in case of many multinational corporations. They have outgrown the governments to a certain degree and we are on the road to the end of capitalism towards a oligarchic dictatorship.
In some points we have crossed the line already, like we can see how things are pushed down onto national levels which clearly hurt local economies and even worse the environment (genetically enhanced food for instance, which in the end can result in a worldwide famine if things go wrong, or the patent law going haiwire, or the globalisation which only works once it comes to labor but is suddenly stopped with trials and local regulations once it comes down to international competition in selling goods)
In some points we have not crossed the line...
But as I said we are on a dangerous road into something we will be called capitalism but will not have anything to do with it and which will be closer to other systems of the past.
Ahem... no capitalism per se would be competition...
sueing someone who cannot defent himself due to lack of legal funds and thus opening a monopoly governmental granted is on the borderline to communisn/faschism/oligarchism, you name it same thing different roots!
Unfortunately Sony of old was not that much better, the german inventor of the Walkman was fighting for decades to get a share of his invention which Sony blatantly copied, he settled a while ago, but the endless trials cost him a fortune and brought him close to bankrupcy.
One of the almost unknown stories, that the biggest success of Sony, was a blatant copy, and the real inventor was bullied in court for decades to get his fair share!
Actually no you meant Mandrake, MDK is one of the best 3d games almost no one has ever played, it is simply Dave Perries masterpiece.
Take the humor of Earthworm Jim to an adult level, mix it into a surreal 3d surrounding and add hardcore shooting action and jump and run and you end up with MDK, no game before and after (except for MDK2 maybe) ever has been similar to it.
If an action game can be perfekt MDK comes close. I highly can recommend get this gem and play it.

Actually my normal ds is like a tank, and the ds light is a solid piece of hardware, I put it regualily into a jacked without any scratch so far, no broken hinges (although I have heard several north american shipments had the problem)
etc...
Nintendo is known for pushing out really solid hardware, and the ds and ds light are no exception.
There always is ZFS, the GPL guys just have to figure out whether they can link to CDDL code or not...
There is not too much in Reiser4 which ZFS does not have implemented but vice versa there is a lot which Reiser4 still does not have.
Actually I would not have put UUW2 into the list, but instead the original UUW, first it came out earlier than Wolf 3d
secondly it was the way better game, UUW to UUW2 was what System Shock was compared to System Shock2.
Actually I would add Gothic2 to the list instead of oblivion, but given the fact that the weird control scheme and being non japanese or us really gave a bad press in the US you probably will never see the gothic series in a us based top 10 article, while the Bethestha people openly stated they had a serious look at Gothic and were so impressed that they learned a lot from them and took a lot of elements from them.
Gothic is especially part two to 3d rpgs what Ultima 7 was to 2d rpgs.
Actually I am not pro Sony but many of you who probably have stayed in the console world, do not know how good Microsoft at smearcampaigns is. They even managed to pull one off before they had the fincancial backbone they currently have. Can anyone remember the OS/2 is half an operating system campaign they were running indirectly in 1990. Half the so called techn journalists tried to find reasons why the non existing preemptive multitasking an constantly crashing Windows 3.0 was better than Os/2. I can remember stupid arguments like you cannot work with more than one program just to justify the defitits of Windows and push Os/2 out of the market.
Sco also got a significant amount of licensing cash from Microsoft for whatever reason (there is still a court case going on)
and the number of fud campaigns generally from Microsoft basically goes into the dozends, this looks really like another FUD and smear masterpiece.
I just wanted to bring it to the point that the phenomenon is not indian only...
but you just brought the entire current us culture into one central sentence, and the reason why the rest of the world currently hates the USA:-)
Ok... lets bring it to the point, you are in a job, where you can barely survive on the salary, someone wants to give you a sum you probably can live all your life like a king where you live for something you probably easily can get away with uncaught, so what are the chances even in the west that you say no.
As for the america being evil thing, simply stop being evil outside of the us, and you will become accepted by the rest of the world, like you used to be...
Well Carbon Copy it really depends. I have a DS and I checked out recently a friends Cube...
I would not call Nintendo games exactly carbon copy, they rely on some basic concepts yes and the same characters, but from every generation to every generation they try to push new concepts and genres within their character domain.
What I see from most other japanese game makers is endless sequels of the same game with new stories same game mechanics. From most other US companies endless sequels even without stories.
Nintendo is one of the few companies which really try to push new game ideas and sometimes fail but most of the times their games are excellent.
This is one of the reasons why the DS won over the psp, the psp simply was the plain old, sports car racing here, shooter there while the ds had new gaming ideas, some gaming ideas taken from the pc world, and excellent old content renewed in a new fasion.
As for the final fantasies, i hate japanes rpgs, no matter if they are final fantasy or mario rpg or whatever. I take a ultima or gothic over final fantasy any day. Japanese style RPG always feels like being forced on rails, and even while the final fantasies have advanced graphicswise, I see them as a phenomenon which simply shows the problems of modern gaming, way better graphics more movies, same old boring game mechanics, the same goes for most shooters btw...
Actually... I dont think even saving private ryan was good, the beginning half hour excellent, and then it went into the usual Spielberg artificial teardrop drama.
I always have the feeling Spielberg made only two movies. A rehash of jaws, action with almost no story, and his artificial teardrop dramas, which normally means lousy story without action or moderate action, most characters being utterly unbelievable.
The first half hour of saving private Ryian was really the exception to the rule, while the rest of private Ryian and war of the worlds was the rule to the rule...
Ahem Barry Lyndon still is one of the best movies ever made, it was close to perfection, the best Cubrik ever...
Sorry to say that but jaws was pure utter junk compared to Barry Lyndon and still is.
Sorry to say that but the golden country for tv shows currently seems to be the UK, recent stuff like green wing, coupling, the new dr. who, ultraviolet (the series not the junk movie) and probably a bunch of other stuff I have yet to discover comes as close to quality television as it can get.
Britain sometimes has a period where they produce top quality content which never make it over the pond neither to mainland europe nor to the US, and currently it seems to be again in such a period.
Ahem for loops and uturns you have two sepecial areas on the pad, which you just have to touch, it is also easy to drop a targetted bomb by just drag and droppin it from the b area...
probably since I come from the pc side of things those things are more natural to me than to a console guy who expects a button for everything.
Actually the major screwup nintendo did with the n64 was to use cartridges, the hardware in every aspect was way better than the playstation.
