  1. Re:Are we at this point yet? on Computers Replace Musicians In West End Musical · · Score: 1
I mean, people go and see some DJ at a club. They use terms like "he's one of the best DJ's in the country". I mean...um...he spins records. How is that a musical talent?
I know that what i am about to say is off-topic, but I had to respond to the first part of your comment...

What exactly does constitute musical talent? Is it holding a piece of wood in your hand that has six strings and plucking the strings? Or is it hitting keys on a piano? Or is it moving your hands closer to and further away from a theremin?

When broken down to its basics, all musical instruments seem ridiculously simple. However, as anyone who has ever picked up a guitar, or a bass, or sat at a pair of drums will know, actually creating something using those instruments is extremely difficult.

The same goes for dj'ing. Putting a record on a turntable is a task anyone with a brain can do. However, creating an hour long composition where music that should not go together flows seemlessly, due to the djs ability to beat match, scratch and countless other things, takes real skill. It is this skill that seperates good djs from the guy who called himself a dj at your bar mitzvah.

There is a ton of music out there if you wish to wet your whistle. If you want to hear kind of music a dj can make, I suggest you listen to one of or all of the following:

    Mark Farina - Mushroom Jazz
    DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
    Amon Tobin - Bricolage
Jurassic 5 - Power in Numbers

    Go see the movie Scratch.
  2. Will it stand a flat tire? on Dutch Invention Uses Electric Engines For Wheels · · Score: 2, Interesting

What happens when the bus gets a flat? That does happen every now and again. It seems like the weight of the bus will fall on the engine. Are they planning on putting 2 tires in each wheel well (like a truck) in case this happens. Also, will you need to keep a spare engine in the trunk in case you do get a flat and you need to change the tire.

I guess this might not be a big deal for a city bus company, since they can just radio HQ and get someone to drive out with a new engine. But if this technology were ever used in real cars, that would be a major drawback.

Hehe, according to your definition, I am addicted to work. Everytime I try to stop working (quit my job), I find that there are severe reprucussions and I can't function normally (no money for food, rent, etc.). After a few months away from work, I have to give in and start working again. Do you know of anywhere that I can get counseling for this horrible work addiction?

Slashdot has shown itself time and time again as being a site that is anti-software patents. Do you think more people will learn about this issue if the site is taken down, or if an article is posted on the front page? People will still be able to draw their own conclusions.

Just because slashdot has a US-centric bias, does not mean that slashdot does not have a large foreign readership. I see posts on here all the time from Australia, Germany, England, and Soviet Russia.

If large sites start closing in protest, this story has a large chance of making it into the mainstream media. That will mean that people who don't usually visit sites like slashdot, gimp, wine, freshRPM will start to hear about software patents and why they are bad for everyone. They will see that the software community is not going to sit idly by while politicians take away our ability to develop software.

Slasdot's closing in protest would be a very good thing. It might even cause some people to venture out into the light since they will not have their favorite site to read.

Come on, say it with me. CLOSE SLASHDOT!!

If slashdot closed down in protest, there is a good chance that some news agencies would pick up that story. This would be good because it get this message out to people who don't normally visit slashdot, gimp, or wine hq.

Grow some balls slashdot. Shut your doors in protest!!

Actually, I don't believe they did invent it. They have stated themselves that they accidentally found their useful search algorythm while trying to devise something else

Not to harp on the obvious here, but they did invent it. To say they discovered their search algorith is to say that it existed before Google came up with it. The way you say that conjures up an image of Larry Page wondering through the desert and one day stumbling upon a great search algorithm.

Regardless of whether it was created by accident or not, it was still invented by Google.

On a different note, are the search methods (e.g., how pages are ranked) described in detail in the patent. Or does the patent not go into any more detail than is common understanding. Sorry, for being lazy, but I hate trying to read through a patent.

  15. What??? on Phish to Sell Downloads of Concerts · · Score: 2, Informative
Lots of bands sound "crappy" live compared to the polished studio music

I can't believe this got modded up as Informative. What you said is true, but Phish is definitely NOT one of these bands. Phish has gotten its reputation by performing excellent live shows. I understand that you are saying that here is more to a Phish show than the music (the people, the parking lot scene, the drugs, etc.) and you are right. But the music is what holds the entire scene together.

Phish has a free live show available for download on phishlive.com. Go and listen to it and get a taste of what Phish really sounds like.
  16. Re:But this goes against the GD tradition... on Phish to Sell Downloads of Concerts · · Score: 1
I would venture to say that these same Phish shows will be available on Etree sites, so why does livephish think people will pay for what they A) can get free already from Etree or B) will almost certainly end up on Etree anyway? Besides, doesn't charging for taped concerts kind of go against the concert-tapes-as-promotion philosophy?

It's not like Phish is now saying that people can no longer tape (or trade) recordings of Phish shows freely. What they are doing is providing a place where people can easily go and get soundboard quality recordings of there shows (w/ cover art and inlays) for $10. That's very cool! How many soundboard quality, 1st generation phish shows can you download off of etree.org?

On top of that, they are not placing any types of DRM on these files. If you want to buy them and distribute them on Kazaa or Morpheus, more power to ya. Personally, I hope other bands learn from this. Money does not need to be made through the recording industry. Every band that tours can make a few extra bucks offering a service that all their fans can enjoy.

On one of their programs, they talked about using the "Big Mac Index" as a means for analyzing a country's economy. Instead of using the value of gold or silver, they use the value of a Big Mac in a country as a determination of a country's economic status. They were able to predict pretty accurately. If I knew anything about economics, I would give you an example.

But like you stated, because there are too many factors that can go into the pricing of a Big Mac (e.g., cost of cattle, cost of shipping, cost of lettuce, ...) this model will never be taken seriously.
